Smoky Mountain Wrestling TV
Broadcast Saturday 05-27-88
Taped Thursday 05-25-88 at Civic Auditorium Ballroom in Knoxville TN
The show opened with a video of last Monday night in Knoxville, as local hero Doug Furnas was in town for a ceremony...
Up next was the Doug Furnas ceremony. Ron Fuller and some other official looking people came to the ring with a plaque, and ran down Doug's history in Knoxville as a Volunteer at the University of Tennessee. They ran through his power lifting accomplishments, and his recent successes in the world of professional wrestling. Furnas then came to the ring and accepted the plaque and was thanking the fans and saying a few words when a commotion was detected at the back of the building. A spot light shown that way where Ivan Koloff could be seen leading Vladimir Pietrov to the ring. Once there, Ivan took the microphone and started a promo about how Furnas may be good, but Vladimir is the premiere athlete in the world. He said that Furnas looks strong, and hearing the speeches, he thinks that Furnas may be the best challenger yet to Pietrov.
Furnas said that he isn't here to wrestle, just to see and thank the fans. Ivan said that Furnas is like everyone else...he's scared of Vladimir and knows he would be ground to dust under his boot if he faced him. Furnas then said that he doesn't know about all of that, that if he and Pietrov met in the ring, Vladimir may just taste defeat for the first time. Ivan tried to goad Furnas into accepting Vladimir's open challenge, but Furnas was not dressed to wrestle, and that's not what he was here for. He thanked the fans again before turning to leave. When he did, Ivan shoved him from behind! Furnas spun around and nailed Ivan with a big right hand! He stood over the fallen Ivan and was pointing down to him when Vladimir clubbed him over the head from behind.
He knocked Furnas down and began to put the boots to him, but Furnas picked him self up and started rocking Pietrov with rights and lefts as the crowd went crazy! Ivan got back to his feet and hit Furnas from behind with the microphone though, then he and Pietrov put the boots to him and kicked him out of the ring to a loud chorus of boos. Ivan got back on the mic and said that it's like he already said...American's are soft, and people like this Doug Furnas from Tennessee are no match for Vladimir. He and Vladimir stood there basking in the boos as Furnas, with a ripped shirt, crawled back into the ring and got in a stance.....he then yelled at Ivan, and as he and Pietrov turned around, Furnas took off and caught both of them with a double clothesline that sent them both from the ring!
Before any other physical confrontation could happen, cops came to the ring and kept them all separated as both sides were motioning for the other to come fight. Furnas then got on the microphone and said that he'll accept Pietrov's open challenge right here in Knoxville! Ron Fuller then took over the microphone and asked him if he was sure, which Furnas said yes, he then asked the Russians and they wanted it too. Fuller then said that he'll get the contracts signed, and in 9 days on May 29 when SMW is back here in Knoxville, the two of them can have at it!!!
The show opened proper with Les Thatcher and Johnny Weaver at the desk wishing everyone a happy Memorial Day weekend, and the hottest place to be this Memorial Day will be in Knoxville to see Doug Furnas vs. Vladimir Pietrov! Weaver chimed in and said that it should be a barn burner. He then let the fans know that this past Monday night, "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan beat Paul Orndorff to win the Smoky Mountain title, and on Wednesday night, The Rock & Roll Express beat the Jive Tones to regain the Smoky Mountain Tag Team titles! Thatcher said we would see highlights of those events later on, but now, heres Ron Fuller to draw our TV Title contender for today.......Ron Fuller stepped up and pulled the name of Scott Armstrong out of the hat as today's challenger to Nelson Royal!
Nelson Royal then came to the desk and said that after he beats Armstrong here today, he'll be $5000 richer! Fuller agreed, but then chimed in and said that if he does win, then next week we will be drawing two new names to find a new TV champion.
Les Thatcher threw the show to a commercial break saying that great wrestling action is on the other side!

Out of the break, Thatcher said that "Nature Boy" Buddy Landel is coming to Smoky Mountain Wrestling in the near future, and then they played a highlight video of Landel.
MATCH: TV Title - Nelson Royal vs. Scott Armstrong
The match was a good wrestling contest, until Royal started resulting in cheap tactics. This finally brought Sam Houston out who tipped off the referee to Royal's tricks. While Royal was arguing with Houston, Armstrong regained his composure and caught Royal with a super kick when he turned around and pinned him to win the Beat the Champ TV Title!
Afterwards, Nelson Royal went to the desk to scream that Sam Houston just cost him $5000, and he wants that money or he's gonna take it out of Houston's hide!

New SMW champion Jim Duggan joined the guys at the desk to talk about beating Orndorff, and then highlights of the match were played.
Right behind that video, was video of the Rock and Roll Express winning the tag team belts from The Jive Tones. Out of that, Ron Wright was at the desk ranting and raving about how Tiger Conway cost him the belts, so he fired him!!! He then served notice to Ricky and Robert that this war ain't over yet!
Shaska Whatley then showed up on scene and said that Conway didn't cost the Jive Tones the belts....that Ron Wright did! He said they had the Rock and Rolls right where they wanted them and it was Wright's interference that back fired and cost them the belts. Wright got animated and said that Whatley can't talk to him like that, because he's the boss. Whatley got right back in his face and said that he ain't the boss no more, because he's fired! He then shoved Wright down on his rear end to a big pop from the crowd before he walked off high fiving fans.

MATCH: The Rock and Roll Express def. Gary Royal and Gene Ligon with a double dropkick on Royal.
They went to the desk to a lot of cheers as Thatcher congratulated them. Morton and Gibson thanked him and talked about finally being done with The Jive Tones, and how great it was to see Whatley put Wright in his place out here earlier. He said it looked more like ol' Pistol Pez instead of Shaska. Just as Morton was about to say something else, the crowd gasped as "The Perfect 10" Baby Doll strolled onto the set looking great. She went right up to Morton and said she just knew that Morton would be out here today bragging about how great they were now that they were the tag team champions again. She said that Morton and Gibson have always been full of themselves, but there is somebody who has put them in their place more than anybody else, and he has something to say......
With that, Dennis Condrey and Randy Rose walked onto the set in street clothes. Condrey wasted no time getting down to business and said that Morton and Gibson are both punks, and he has busted their heads open more times than money can count! He said if Morton and Gibson thought the Midnight Express was tough, they ain't seen nothing yet, because the ORIGINAL Midnight Express is as bad as they come, and they're here to let Morton and Gibson know that it's only a matter of time until the Original Midnight Express are the new tag team champions!
Condrey, Rose, and Baby Doll then left as a stunned Les Thatcher and Johnny Weaver looked on as Morton said that the Rock and Roll Express has always been better than the Midnight Express, and they're better than this Original Midnight Express too, and when the time comes, he and Robert will prove it again.
The Rock and Roll's left as Thatcher and Weaver wrapped it up for the day.
End.
