Broadcast nationwide on Superstation WGN
Airing live from the Roy Wilkins Auditorium in St. Paul, MN
“From coast to coast, border to border, and continent to continent, this is the AWA, the major leagues of professional wrestling!”
Rod Trongard opens the show, and welcomes his co-host, AWA President Bill Watts. Trongard and Watts welcome us to USA Pro Wrestling!
Trongard runs down tonight’s show, including the feature match, a special mixed tag team match, as Scott Hall teams up with International Women’s champ Madusa Miceli to face the team of AWA TV champ “Hollywood” John Tatum and Sherri Martel.
Plus, Greg Gagne squares off with the madman from the Sudan, Abdullah the Butcher!
And, we’ll take a look at a man that’s on his way to the AWA, known as the Russian Nightmare, Nikita Koloff! Bill Watts says that Koloff has defected, and has now fully embraced the good ol’ US of A!
SGT. SLAUGHTER VS. JACK FOLEY. Foley holds his own early on, pummeling Slaughter, but the Sarge battles back, and connects with the Slaughter Cannon for the pinfall.
Watts and Trongard talk about last week’s main event, where the Fantastics defended the AWA Tag titles against the Islanders in a match where the losing team would leave the AWA!
VTR: Last Week on Pro Wrestling USA:
Late in the match, things have been pretty even thus far, but the Fantastics start to gain a clear advantage as we pass the 10-minute mark. Bobby Fulton was being worked over by both Islanders, but when Tama went for a splash, Fulton got his knees up, with Tama landing right on Fulton’s knees. Fulton crawls to his corner, diving forward to make the tag, just as Tama grabs his leg, and Tommy Rogers comes in, hitting Tama with a flurry of punches, followed by a standing dropkick. Haku enters the ring, but he receives the same treatment, eating a dropkick from Rogers!
As Haku tumbles through the ropes and to the outside, Rogers works over Tama, then tags Fulton back in, and after dropping Tama with a double dropkick, Fulton heads to the top rope, and they hit the Fantastic Flip on Tama! Rogers, the legal man, covers Tama, while Fulton make sure Haku doesn’t come back in to try and break it up.
Three seconds later, the Fantastics are victorious, and the Islanders have to leave the AWA! Capt. Lou is furious, and he heads to the back without the Islanders.
END VTR
Trongard then says that the Islanders are no longer in the AWA, but the fans who were in attendance at Chicago Stadium last night, saw a new team issue a challenge to the champions . . . Stan Hansen and King Kong Brody!
Watts says that he’s known Brody and Hansen for a long time, they both broke into the business in the Southwest, around the same time that he was wrestling there, so he knows, first-hand, just what an awesome force these two are!
ABDULLAH THE BUTCHER (w/Gen. Skandor Akbar) VS. GREG GAGNE. Gagne, a former AWA Tag Team champ, has his work cut out for him here, as Abby attacks him as soon as the bell sounds, and doesn’t let up at all! Gagne can get very little offence going, and Abby gets the win after delivering the Butcher’s Axe elbowdrop.
After the match, Skandor Akbar gets on the house mic, and says that last night in Chicago, Steve Williams intentionally got himself disqualified against the Butcher, because he knew it was the only way he would save his title! Akbar says Williams is a coward, but sooner or later, he and Abby will meet again, and when that happens, the Butcher will not only take Williams’ title, but he will take his career as well!
Watts and Trongard talk about the TV title situation between former champion Scott Hall, and the man that took the title from him, “Hollywood” John Tatum.
VTR: Last Week on Pro Wrestling USA:
Hall had the match well in hand, and looked to be on his way to victory, when Sherri Martel jumped into the ring as Hall had Tatum covered, and Sherri started stomping away at Hall!
Suddenly, Madusa Miceli made her return to AWA TV, running down to the ring, and attacking Sherri! The two ladies brawl, as Tatum and Hall try to separate them, before getting into a brawl themselves!
END VTR
Trongard says that the AWA promoters are working to get a rematch signed for the TV title, but in the meantime, that incident last week leads us to our main event a little later on tonight, a mixed tag team match between Hall and Madusa vs Tatum and Sherri!
Watts says that both Sherri and Madusa are double tough, probably almost as tough as any of the men in the AWA, and he can’t wait to see this match later tonight!
AWA WORLD TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP:
THE FANTASTICS: TOMMY ROGERS & BOBBY FULTON (champs) VS. THE MASKED SUPER ASSASSINS. The masked men are in the ring, awaiting the arrival of the champions. ZZ Top’s “Sharp Dressed Man” begins to play, and here come the Fantastics . . .
WAIT A MINUTE!!! Stan Hansen and King Kong Brody appear, and they blindside the Fantastics in the aisle! Hansen repeatedly whips Fulton over the back with his bullrope, then takes the cowbell that’s attached to it, and repeatedly smacks Fulton in the forehead with it! Mean, while Brody knocks Rogers to the floor with a boot to the head, and then puts the boots to him!
Hansen and Brody drag the Fantastics to the ring. Inside the ring, the Super Assassins question what Hansen and Brody are doing, as they were looking forward to a shot at the belts, but Hansen and Brody smack them around as well! After tossing the masked men over the top rope and to the floor, Brody and Hansen turn their attention back to the champions.
Rogers is back to his feet, and throws some punches at Hansen, but after the beating he’s taken, there’s not much behind the punches. Hansen shrugs them off, and drops Rogers with a haymaker! Hansen then whips Rogers with his bullrope, while Brody delivers a flying kneedrop on Fulton!
The champions are down and out, they can’t defend themselves, and several wrestlers, referees and AWA officials hit the ring, AWA President Bill Watts even leaves his spot at the announce desk to go into the ring and help. Finally Hansen and Brody are forcibly removed from the ring, and medical personnel come in to check on the Fantastics as Trongard sends us to a commercial break.
Magnum TA stands in front of an AWA backdrop, and talks about the AWA returning to the St. Paul Civic Center on Thursday night, May 18. The huge main event has been signed, as AWA champion Steve Williams and Sgt. Slaughter team up to face Skandor Akbar’s duo of Abdullah the Butcher and the One Man Gang!
We hear comments from Williams and Slaughter. Doc says that he gave the Butcher a taste of his own medicine the last time he faced him in the ring, and at the Civic Center on May 18, he and Slaughter are going to run the Butcher and the Gang right out of the AWA!
Slaughter says that he dealt with maggots like Abby and the Gang during his time in the Marine Corps, and says that he ran those pukes right out of the Corps and he and Williams will do the same to Abdullah and the One Man Gang!
Back from the break, Watts and Trongard talk about what took place just moments ago, as the AWA Tag champs the Fantastics were blindsided by Stan Hansen and King Kong Brody. Trongard says that Hansen and Brody have been removed from the building, and they’re joined at this time by the Fantastics, who were looked over by the medical team on hand.
The Fantastics join Watts and Trongard. Fulton has his head heavily bandaged, and Rogers still looks kind of out of it. Fulton is livid, and says that everybody talks about how big and how bad Brody and Hansen are, yet they felt that they had to attack him and Tommy from behind! He says he says that anybody can seem tough when they sneak attack somebody, and then he asks Watts to do everything in his power to sign a match between them and Hansen and Brody, and then he and Tommy will show everybody that Hansen and Brody aren’t so bad!
We go to a video, set to KISS’s “War Machine”, featuring Nikita Koloff in action. We see Nikita hitting several opponents with his devastating Russian Sickle. The video ends with footage from back in January, the NWA’s World Championship Wrestling show, where Nikita faces off with the massive Big Bubba Rogers. Nikita gets up after the Bubba Slam, something that shocks the announce team, then drops Bubba with the Sickle.
Watts and Trongard talk about Nikita coming to the AWA, and Watts says that Koloff is as tough as anybody in the sport, and he can’t wait to see him in the AWA!
MIXED TAG TEAM MATCH:
SCOTT HALL & MADUSA MICELI VS. “HOLLYWOOD” JOHN TATUM & SHERRI MARTEL. The action goes back and forth in this one, neither team can really get a clear advantage, and after more than 10 minutes of action, the bell sounds and we’re informed that the match is a DRAW, as TV time has run out!
Trongard and Watts quickly wrap things up as the match is still going on in the ring.
