AWA “PRO WRESTLING USA”
Airdate: Saturday, March 11, 1988
Broadcast nationwide on Superstation WGN
Taped on March 7, 1988 at the Roy Wilkins Auditorium in St. Paul, Minnesota
“From coast to coast, border to border, and continent to continent, this is the AWA, the major leagues of professional wrestling!”
Rod Trongard opens the show, and welcomes his co-host, Magnum TA. This week on Pro Wrestling USA, two big feature matches. First we’ll see a tag team match, as new World’s champion Steve Williams and Sgt. Slaughter take on Devastation Inc’s Mr. Saito and Big Van Vader! Then, the Islanders take on the Fantastics in a non-title bout!
Plus, we’ll hear from “Hollywood” John Tatum and Sherri Martel, and General Skandor Akbar has a new addition to his Devastation Inc stable, and we’ll see him in our first match!
Skandor Akbar comes out for the first match, leading his newest charge to the ring . . . the madman from the Sudan, Abdullah the Butcher!
ABDULLAH THE BUTCHER (w/General Skandor Akbar) VS. DJ PETERSON. Abdullah pounces on Peterson before the bell, and batters the youngster, before connecting with the Butcher’s Axe for the pinfall.
Trongard and Magnum talk about General Skandor Akbar and Devastation Inc, which now consists of Big Van Vader, Mr. Saito, Abdullah the Butcher and the One Man Gang! Magnum says that has got to be the most formidable stable he’s ever seen, and says he doesn’t envy anyone who has to step into the ring with that group!
Larry Nelson is in the locker room with Stan “the Lariat” Hansen and King Kong Brody. Nelson starts to ask Hansen a question, but Stan grabs the mic, telling Nelson to shut his mouth before Hansen shoves his cowbell down Larry’s throat! Hansen says that the AWA fans have never seen anything like him and Brody, they’re the biggest, baddest men in wrestling, and they’re here to do what they do best . . . beat people up!
SCOTT HALL VS. NICK KINISKI. Kiniski is a big, rugged individual, and he gives Hall a tough match, but in the end, Hall gets the win, hitting a Bulldog for the pinfall.
STAN “THE LARIAT” HANSEN & KING KONG BRODY VS. BILL & RANDY MULKEY. Mulkeymania comes to an end here, as Hansen and Brody run roughshod over the brothers. Hansen catches Randy Mulkey with a brutal Lariat, and then tags Brody, who bounces off the ropes and delivers a leaping kneedrop for the pinfall. To make sure Bill doesn’t try to break up the cover, Hansen grabs him and tosses him over the top rope and to the floor.
The referee raises their hands, and then Hansen shoves the ref to the mat. Randy Mulkey still isn’t moving, as a group of referees come out and check on him, then call for medical assistance. Hansen and Brody leave the ring, arms up in victory, as Bill Mulkey slowly climbs back into the ring, as his brother is loaded up onto a stretcher.
Trongard and Magnum are left speechless by the sheer brutality of the match, and both hope that Randy Mulkey will be okay.
Rod then sends us to a special segment with Larry Nelson, who recently visited the Hollywood home of John Tatum.
Larry Nelson is poolside with “Hollywood” John Tatum, who is tanning himself in a chair, while Sherri Martel floats in the pool. Nelson says that Tatum has a beautiful home, to which Tatum says that it’s just one of the many luxuries afforded people of his talent and stature.
Tatum continues, saying that while the other AWA wrestlers are freezing their butts off up in the Midwest, he’s here, working on his tan. Tatum says that they wanted him to wrestle on the show this week, but he didn’t feel like it, and says that he wrestles when he wants, not when the promoters tell him to.
Sherri Martel makes her way out of the pool and joins them. She says that the fans don’t deserve to see Hollywood John Tatum for free, they should have to pay for the opportunity, so if they want to see him, they’ll have to buy a ticket when the AWA comes to their town.
Tatum then tells Nelson that he’s done talking to him, and tells Larry to take a hike.
STEVE “DR. DEATH” WILLIAMS & SGT. SLAUGHTER VS. BIG VAN VADER & MR. SAITO (w/ General Skandor Akbar). This is a real slobberknocker, right from the opening bell! All four men brawl in the ring to start, and when the referee finally gets some order restored, it doesn’t last long!
A few minutes in, Williams and Slaughter have the upper hand, as they keep Saito in their corner, but suddenly Abdullah the Butcher hits the ring! Abby attacks Slaughter with his trusty fork, while Vader and Saito and gang up on Williams. This brings Jimmy “Superfly” Snuka to the ring, to help even things up. At this point, all hell has broken loose, and the referee calls for the bell, throwing the match out!
Snuka and Williams brawl with Vader and Saito, while Abby uses his fork to turn Slaughter’s face into a crimson mask. Skandor Akbar gets involved as well, attempting to throw a FIREBALL at Williams, but luckily Snuka, weilding a chair, gets the chair up in front of Williams to block the fireball. Snuka then batters Akbar with the chair as Williams hits Saito with the Oklahoma Stampede. Vader then pounces on Williams and pummels him with rights and lefts, but as he sets Williams up for the powerbomb, Snuka whacks Vader across the back with the chair!
A group of officials and prelim wrestlers hit the ring to try to stop the chaos. At first the prelim guys get tossed around like ragdolls, but finally some sense of order is restored as we go to a commercial break.
Back from the break, Trongard and Magnum talk about what went down just a few moments ago, as Abdullah the Butcher got involved in the tag team match, but luckily Jimmy Snuka came out to even up the sides, and we ended up with a pier six brawl!
NON-TITLE MATCH
THE ISLANDERS: HAKU & TAMA (w/ Capt. Lou Albano) VS. THE FANTASTICS: TOMMY ROGERS & BOBBY FULTON. These two teams are quite evenly matched, but just seconds before the time ran out, the Fantastics are able to pick up the win, as Fulton pins Tama following a double dropkick.
The Fantastics have defeated the World Tag Team champions in this non-title match!
Trongard and Magnum wrap up the show, with Trongard hyping next week’s show.
