Opening Clip: Slater/Ole vs Islanders, Last Week on Championship Wrestling:
Slater and Anderson are looking for some payback after being attacked from behind by the Islanders last week. The match ends in a DQ win for the champions when, as Ole prepares to come off the second rope with a kneedrop, Tama throws a handful of powder in his eyes!
After the bell, with Ole blinded, the Islanders gang up on Dick Slater. He holds his own briefly, but Haku catches him with the savate kick, that puts Slater on the mat, and the Islanders proceed to pummel him, with Tama hitting not one, but two splashes off the top, before a group of wrestlers can break things up.
END CLIP
Rod Trongard opens the show, and welcomes his co-host, Magnum TA.
Tonight, our main event will see a rematch for the World Tag Team titles, between the champions Ole Anderson & Dick Slater, and the challengers, the Islanders! Plus, three weeks before he challenges Rick Rude for the World title at SuperClash II, Steve Williams faces Rude’s stable-mate in the Pringle Dynasty, former World Tag Team champ “Maniac” Matt Borne!
Rod and Magnum then send us to the office of the AWA President, Stanley Blackburn, for some pre-recorded comments regarding the main event at SuperClash II.
AWA President Stanley Blackburn is seated behind a large desk in his office. Blackburn says that the steel cage match for the AWA World title has officially been signed for SuperClash II on pay-per-view, and per the request of Mr. Rude and Mr. Pringle, the stipulation that Steve Williams will retire if he fails to win the title has been put into the contract.
Blackburn says that the AWA doesn’t normally sanction cage matches, so that means when they do take place, they’re non-title. However, the AWA Board of Directors has made an exception for SuperClash, and the World title will indeed be on the line on February 25!
“MANIAC” MATT BORNE (w/ Percival Pringle III) VS. STEVE “DR. DEATH” WILLIAMS. Williams gains an early advantage, but Percy Pringle interferes, allowing Borne to take over. As Borne works Doc over, Sgt. Slaughter makes his way to ringside! Slaughter grabs two chairs, sets them up side by side, and tells Pringle to take a seat! Pringle refuses, but Slaughter grabs him by the collar, causing Percy to change his mind and quickly sit down in the chair. Sarge sits down right beside him, and tells Pringle that he won’t be sticking his nose in the match anymore!
Inside the ring, Borne still has the advantage, until he goes to whip Williams into the corner, and Doc reverses it. Borne hits the turnbuckles, but when Williams charges at him, Borne moves out of the way, and Doc crashes into the corner. Borne rolls a stunned Williams up, and puts both his feet on the middle rope for leverage. Slaughter is up out of the chair, and points this out to the ref, who stops counting and admonishes Borne.
Borne jaws with Slaughter, and Percy Pringle gets up out of his seat, folds the chair up, and hits Slaughter across the back with it! Slaughter is stunned, but stays on his feet, then grabs Percy by the collar. Borne rolls out of the ring, and jumps Slaughter before he can do any damage to Percy. As Slaughter and Borne trade punches on the floor, Williams leaves the ring too, and helps Slaughter fight off Borne and Pringle. Inside the ring, the referee calls for the bell, and declares the match a No Contest.
At that point, AWA champion Rick Rude arrives on the scene, sneaking up behind Williams, and clipping his knee! Williams collapses to the floor, and Rude takes the chair that Percy had used to hit Slaughter, and starts bashing Williams in the knee with it!
Slaughter tries to help Williams, but Borne attacks him again, while Rude continues to work over the knee of Dr. Death! Finally other wrestlers and referees are able to clear the ringside area, but the damage has been done, and Williams has to be helped to the back, as he’s unable to put any pressure on the injured knee.
Trongard and Magnum talk about what took place before the break, both are disgusted by the actions of Rick Rude. Magnum says that it’s obvious Rude feels he needs some kind of advantage going into SuperClash II on February 25, Rude knows he can’t beat Williams without help, and since nobody can interfere on his behalf at SuperClash, he had to resort to trying to injure Williams. Trongard says Doc was taken for medical attention, and we’ll get an update just as soon as some information becomes available.
DEVASTATION INC: BIG VAN VADER & MR. SAITO (w/ General Skandor Akbar) VS. JOHNNY GUNN & STEVE DOLL. Gunn and Doll are a pair of impressive youngsters, but they don’t stand a chance here. After about 3 minutes of action, as Saito pummels Doll in the corner, Vader hoists Gunn up and drives him into the mat with a powerbomb for the 1, 2, 3!
After the decision, Vader and Saito continue to assault their opponents, only when the referee threatens to reverse the decision does Akbar order them from the ring.
Rick Rude and Percival Pringle III make their way out and join Trongard and Magnum at the broadcast desk. Trongard tells them that what Rude did earlier was reprehensible, and they should both be ashamed of themselves.
Rude and Percy, however, look quite pleased, and they have a good laugh at Doc’s expense. Rude says that they got what they wanted, Williams signed the contract stating that when he loses at SuperClash, he will retire, and now we’ll see how well Doc can wrestle on one leg!
Percy says that at SuperClash, Rick Rude will retire Steve Williams, and Matt Borne will run Sgt. Slaughter out of the AWA! Pringle then says, speaking of running people out of the AWA, he brought a piece of video footage with him, that he wants all the fans to see. This is from a recent match between Butch Reed and Terry Taylor.
Footage is shown of World TV champion “Hacksaw” Butch Reed pinning Terry Taylor when, after a ref bump, Matt Borne came into the ring and he and Reed delivered a spike piledriver. That wasn’t enough, though, and after Reed gets his hand raised, he throws Taylor over the top rope and to the floor. Outside the ring, Reed sets Taylor up for another piledriver, and Borne, standing on the ring apron, grabs Taylor’s feet, then jumps off the apron, delivering extra force as Reed spikes Taylor’s head into the arena floor!
Taylor is loaded onto a stretcher, but before the medical team can remove him from ringside, Reed dumps Taylor off the stretcher . . . and he and Borne deliver ANOTHER spike spiledriver on the floor!
Pringle laughs, and says that after that, Terry Taylor tucked his tail between his legs and left the AWA! Pringle says that everyone who has stood in his way is either gone, or on their way out!
ICEMAN PARSONS VS. MASAHIRO CHONO. The youngster from Japan gives Parsons a tough match, but in the end, the Iceman gets the win following the Butt Butt.
AWA WORLD TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP, NO DISQUALIFICATIONS:
DICK SLATER & OLE ANDERSON (champs) VS. THE ISLANDERS: HAKU & TAMA (w/ Capt. Lou Albano). After the match last week ended in a DQ, the no disqualification stip was added to the rematch. After more than 10 minutes of back and forth action, Ole Anderson gets knocked out of the ring, where Capt. Lou attacks him and keeps him from getting back into the ring. Inside the ring, Haku comes in and catches Slater with a savate kick to the chin, putting him on the mat, and from there Tama comes off the top rope with a diving headbutt for the 1, 2, 3!
We have new World Tag Team champions in the Islander, Haku and Tama!
Trongard and Magnum wrap things up and hype next week’s show.
