We are one week away from the tournament to crown the next International Heavyweight Champion. We’ll bring you the opening round of that tournament live from the Forum next Saturday night. Let’s take a look at the bracket.'
INTERNATIONAL HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE TOURNAMENT 11/26/87
Jacques Rougeau vs. Leo Burke
Rick Martel vs. Ronnie Garvin
The Great Samu vs. Dino Bravo
Terry Gordy vs. Dan Kroffat
Milt Avruskin: ‘Right here tonight, fans, we’ll have the International Tag Team Champions the Rougeau Brothers defending against the Long Riders, and we’ll also have the massive One Man Gang and the Great Samu in action against the Simpson brothers. However, right now I’d like to welcome a group of wrestlers who call themselves the Lionhearts.’’
From the dressing room come former International Tag Team Champion Dan Kroffat and two wrestlers trained in Calgary’s infamous Hart Dungeon, Owen Hart and Chris Benoit.
Milt Avruskin: ‘Gentlemen, welcome here to International Wrestling. Dan Kroffat, I should say welcome back to you since these fans know you well. Next Saturday night, they might be calling you champion.’
Dan Kroffat: ‘That’s my hope, Milt. Hello to all the fans out there. You’ve always been behind me, I hope you’ll stand behind the Lionhearts because we believe we’re the future of this sport.’
Milt Avruskin: ‘Dan, next Saturday night, it’s the International Heavyweight Title tournament. You have a very tall task ahead in the first round against one Bamm Bamm Gordy.’
Dan Kroffat: ‘Gordy is one tough…’
Hold on a second! It’s getting crowded because on the scene now are The Long Riders (Bill Irwin, Bull Johnson and Ron Bass), and they’re ranting and raving!
Milt Avruskin: ‘Long Riders, we’re supposed to see you later against the Rougeaus. This is not your interview time!’
Bill Irwin: ‘Our interview time is whenever we damn well please, Mr. TV Announcer!’
Ron Bass: ‘What I wanna know is why you’re wasting your TV with these runts? These here pair of cowboy boots I’m wearin’ are older than they are. Hey pretty boys, beat it before I use these here boots to stomp you up the backside.’
Owen Hart: ‘We might be young, but we can take care of ourselves. We’ve all trained in the Dungeon. You wouldn’t last 60 seconds in the Dungeon, Bass. None of you phony cowboys would!’
Ron Bass: ‘Why you little…’
Ron Bass throws a punch and now he’s brawling with Owen Hart! Bill Irwin is hammering away on Chris Benoit, and Dan Kroffat is trading rights and lefts with Bull Johnson! It’s a wild scene until officials, referees and prelim wrestlers flood the area to break these six men up!
Milt Avruskin: ‘Unbelievable, fans! The Long Riders and the Lion Hearts have torn up our interview here, so let’s go up to the ring.’
ONE MAN GANG AND THE GREAT SAMU (w/ Eddie Creatchman) VS. THE SIMPSON BROTHERS
Eddie ‘The Brain’ Creatchman unleashed the Ugandan Giant Kamala on International Wrestling week, and tonight he’s brought the One Man Gang from Halsted Street in Chicago to Eastern Canada. The Great Samu is no stranger to fans in the area, having beaten the biggest and best here in International Wrestling in the past. They face Steve and Shaun Simpson, a dynamite team from South Africa.
The Simpson brothers get to show off their speed in the ring against Samu, who can match them move-for-move. It’s trouble when The Great Samu catches a cross-body attempt from Shaun Simpson, shifts him up on his shoulders and floors him with a Samoan drop. A tag to the One Man Gang spells doom as the big man drops a big elbow across the chest. Gang hits the ropes and squashes Simpson with the 747 splash for the victory.
WINNERS: ONE MAN GANG AND THE GREAT SAMU
Milt Avruskin: ‘These two men are frightening. Eddie Creatchman has assembled his most dangerous stable of monsters ever. We’ll be right back.’

-- Joined in Progress --
Rick Martel heads over to his corner and makes the tag to Ronnie Garvin, who enters the match for the first time here. Garvin steps into the ropes, looks over at Gordy and then swings around and drills his own Rick Martel with one of his patented hands of stone! Down goes Rick Martel and then Ronnie starts pounding away with the Garvin Stomp! Dino Bravo is up now and he charges into the ring and shoves Garvin, who stares at him blankly, hops out to the floor and takes off to the dressing room! What the heck was that about?
[End VTR]
Milt Avruskin: ‘Last week, Ronnie Garvin stunned all of us with that vicious cheap shot on Ricky Martel, his supposed partner. These two will meet next Saturday night in the International Heavyweight Title tournament. Right now, let’s go to these pre-recorded comments from Ronnie Garvin.’
[VTR]
Ronnie Garvin: ‘So you think I owe you people some answers, huh? Martel thinks I owe him some answers? I don’t owe anyone nothin’. I never asked to be your partner last week, Martel. The way I see it, it’s your own fault I nearly broke your jaw. You shoulda talked to the Rougeaus. They remember what the Garvins are all about. Last week, I started teachin’ you a lesson. Next Saturday night, I finish it!’
[End VTR]
Milt Avruskin: ‘There you have it, fans. Right now, let’s go down to the ring to see Ricky Martel in action.’
RICK MARTEL VS. MICHEL ‘LE JUGE’ DuBOIS
The infamous reign of terror caused by Michel DuBois across Quebec and Ontario over the years remains notorious for many older fans. Martel is ready for him and gets an early advantage by clotheslining DuBois out to the floor. Ricky is clearly favoring that injured jaw, rubbing it repeatedly as it nags him.
Once back in the ring, a knee to the gut gives Le Juge control of the contest for a bit, and he lays into Martel with a forearm on that injured jaw. DuBois goes up to the second rope for a flying stomp, but Martel rolls out of the way. Martel then clips the knee and clamps Michel DuBois into his Quebec Crab. DuBois struggles for a moment, but eventually submits. Ricky Martel gets the win.
WINNER: RICK MARTEL
Milt Avruskin: ‘Ricky, quite a win considering last week’s vicious attack from Ronnie Garvin. I have to ask, how is that jaw?’
Rick Martel: ‘I’m not gonna lie to you, Milt, I’m far from 100%. But I’ve got bad news for you Garvin if you think a little pain is gonna hold me back. I had an injured back when I beat Jumbo Tsuruta for the AWA World Heavyweight Title. A little jaw pain is nothing compared to that. Next week, it’s going to be sweet kicking your butt and then going on to become International Champion!’
Milt Avruskin: ‘Best of luck next week, Ricky! We’ll be right back!’

Milt Avruskin: ‘More incredible action is on the way fans. Don’t forget, we’ll have International Tag Team Champions the Rougeaus against the Long Riders coming up.’
MICHAEL P.S. HAYES VS. GINO BRITO JR.
‘Bad Street USA’ blares throughout the Paul Sauve Arena as Michael P.S. Hayes of the Fabulous Freebirds makes his way down to ringside in his sparkling Confederate flag robe. Hayes struts around the ring, refusing to lock up with Gino Brito Jr. The youngster gets frustrated and eventually decks Hayes with a right hand, and off we go.
Don’t let his arrogance fool you, the leader of the Fabulous Freebirds is one dangerous customer in the ring and he proves that against Gino Brito tonight. Michael Hayes eventually locks in the bulldog headlock, takes off and drives young Gino Jr’s face into the canvas. Hayes with the cover and the three count to give him the win.
WINNER: MICHAEL P.S. HAYES
Milt Avruskin: ‘I must admit, it looks like Freebird Fantasia is really picking up momentum here in International Wrestling.’
Michael P.S. Hayes: ‘I told you it would, four-eyes! See, everywhere the Freebirds go, it’s the same story! You pit your hometown boys against us, and we knock ‘em down like they were nothin’, man. I heard this Rougeau punk out here last week calling out the Freebirds. Be careful what you wish for, Frenchie! You - or your family - just might get it! You hear me?’
Milt Avruskin: ‘I’m sure Jacques Rougeau is listening, Michael. Now, next week, your Freebird brother Terry Gordy has Dan Kroffat in the first round of the International Wrestling.’
Michael P.S. Hayes: ‘You think we’re worried about a little guy? Like Ron Bass said, Kroffat ain’t nothin’ but a runt and his buddies are runts too. Someday they’ll be something in this sport, but right now they’re just roadkill in my big brother Bamm Bamm’s way. You know what happens to road kill, don’t you? Haha!’
Milt Avruskin: ‘On that note, let’s take a break.’

Milt Avruskin: ‘It’s time for our main event, fans! The International Tag Team Titles are on the line.’
TV MAIN EVENT: INTERNATIONAL TAG TEAM TITLE MATCH
THE ROUGEAUS (w/Jacques Rougeau) VS. THE LONG RIDERS (w/ Bull Johnson)
This title match is a barn-burner, with both teams scoring lots of near falls. The closing moments see ‘Outlaw’ Ron Bass nearly taking the win byoff Armand Rougeau with a belly-to-back suplex. However, Armand kicks out of a pin and fights his way back to his feet. Bull Johnson then jumps on the apron and begins distracting the referee.
Jacques Rougeau doesn’t like that one bit! Jacques leaves the broadcast booth and he jumps onto the apron as well. Bull Johnson and Jacques begin arguing on the apron, until the Bull throws a punch. Jacques blocks it and he levels Bull with a right hand of his own!
Wild Bill Irwin charges over to check on his Long Rider partner Bull Johnson and then he gets in Jacques’s face as well. Raymond Rougeau uses the opportunity and throws Ron Bass right into his both Johnson and Irwin! Ray with the roll-up here, but Bull Johnson dives in and drops an elbow across the back of Rougeau’s neck. That’s a disqualification fans, and now all three Rougeau brothers are brawling with all three Long Riders!
Hold on, it’s the Fabulous Freebirds! Michael P.S. Hayes, Terry Gordy and Buddy Roberts rush the ring and now this is a mugging, fans. The Long Riders and the Freebirds have the numbers advantage here as they work over the three Rougeau brothers. Not for long because here come the Lionhearts! Dan Kroffat, Chris Benoit and Owen Hart all scale turnbuckles and leap off with missile dropkicks simultaneously drilling Buddy Roberts, Ron Bass and Bull Johnson! What an incredible sight that was! Those three fall out to the floor and now the Rougeaus double-clothesline Michael P.S. Hayes out as well. Wild Bill Irwin faces a big right hand from Jacques Rougeau that sends him sprawling now too.
Look at this - it’s Terry Gordy all alone in the ring against six other men, and he’s motioning for them to bring it on! Gordy is fighting off all six of these men simultaneously, what a beast! A double dropkick from Hart and Benoit staggers him. Now it's big flying forearm from Kroffat, and another dropkick from Jacques Rougeau. Finally, down goes Gordy! Michael Hayes and Buddy Roberts pull their brother out to the floor, and now Gordy is trying to get back in. Terry Gordy is furious and he wants more! Hayes and Roberts pull him away as the Long Riders cuss and rant on the other side of the ring!
WINNERS: INTERNATIONAL TAG TEAM CHAMPIONS THE ROUGEAUS (VIA DQ)
Milt Avruskin: ‘Fans, we’re all out of time for this edition of International Wrestling! It’s all breaking down here! Joining us next week from the Forum for the first round of the International Heavyweight Title tournament. Don’t miss it, be there!’
