A press conference was held on Saturday afternoon, November 11.
Western States Sports promoter Don Owen and former World's champion Verne Gagne are seated side by side at a large table.
Mr. Owen announces that, with the United States Wrestling Association being dissolved, and his desire to retire from promoting in order to spend more time with his family, he's decided to sell the Western States Wrestling promotion to Mr. Gagne!
Verne says that he is renaming the promotion the American Wrestling Association, and will be moving the headquarters from Denver to his office in Minneapolis, MN!
Verne continues, saying that the wrestling landscape is changing, and his goal is to expand the promotion beyond it's regional boundaries, which is why the name change was necessary, and promote it at a national, and even international, level!
As of this moment, the Western States titles will be recognized as the AWA World titles, so Rick Rude will now be the World heavyweight champion, Buzz Sawyer and Matt Borne are now the AWA World Tag Team Champions, and Eddie Gilbert is the International TV champion!
Verne says that highlight shows of the recent Western States television show have been sent around to every major market in North America, so that fans outside of the Western States region can get up to speed on what's been going on in the promotion, and starting next Saturday, November 19, AWA Championship Wrestling will air each and every Saturday afternoon on the superstation out of Chicago, WGN!
Mr. Owen and Mr. Gagne shake hands, and thank everyone for being there for this historic announcement.
