Taped on November 2, 1987 at the Portland Sports Arena in Portland, OR
Brought to you by Western States Wrestling and sanctioned by the United States Wrestling Association
Dutch Savage and Don Coss are seated at a table near the ring, in front of a backdrop with the Western States Wrestling and USWA logos on it. Coss welcomes us back to their old stomping grounds, the “House of Action”, the Portland Sports Arena for WILD WEST WRESTLING!
Dutch and Coss talk about last week’s show, which was a highlight show of the Western States title tournament from October 22 in Casper, Wyoming. As we saw, Rick Rude won the tournament, to become the Western States champion, and also aligned himself with Percival Pringle, revealing himself to the be final addition to Pringle’s Dynasty!
Another shocking event that transpired that night, “Mr. Unpredictable” Dick Slater made his Western States debut in the tournament, and after he beat Buzz Sawyer in the first round, Sawyer took exception, and let’s take a look at what happened.
VTR: Sawyer vs Slater, JIP from Oct. 22 in Casper, WY:
Sawyer enjoys an early advantage, but Slater fights back and gets several nearfalls. Sawyer hits a low blow, and then plants a vicious kick to the head. Slater again fights back, and in the end, he drops Sawyer on his head with a jumping piledriver for the 1, 2, 3!
Sawyer throws a fit, and as Slater gets his hand raised, Sawyer jumps him from behind, and puts the boots to him! Percy Pringle enters the ring, and gives Sawyer the chain that he carries with him to the ring. Sawyer wraps the chain around his fist, and proceeds to beat Slater to a bloody pulp! A group of babyfaces, led by Steve Williams and Jim Duggan, hit the ring and chase Sawyer and Pringle off, but the damage has been done, and Slater is helped from the ring, unable to even stand on his own.
END VTR
Dutch says that Dick Slater is not someone you want to upset, and says that the Mad Dog may have bitten off more than he can chew!
Coss then talks about tonight’s feature match, a rematch for the Western States Tag Team titles. Two weeks ago, Jim Duggan and Steve Williams gave the champions, Sawyer and Borne, all they could handle, let’s take a look at the final moments of that match.
VTR: Sawyer & Borne vs Duggan & Williams, two weeks ago on Wild West Wrestling, JIP:
The blood starts flowing early, first the champions bust Williams open, as they repeatedly double-team him, delivering brutal punches that open up a cut over Williams’ left eye. The blood running down his face doesn’t stop Williams from battling back, eventually sending both Borne and Sawyer out of the ring, with Williams then tagging in Duggan. Duggan and Williams then go outside after the champions, and after a brief brawl on the floor, Duggan opens up a cut on Matt Borne’s head by slamming him face-first into the ringpost!
Late in the match, referee Alfonso is knocked down, and “Hacksaw” Butch Reed sprints down to the ring! Inside the ring, Hacksaw Duggan has the advantage on Buzz Sawyer, pummeling the Mad Dog in the corner. Butch Reed jumps into the ring and, with a taped object in his hand, delivers a knock-out punch to the head of Hacksaw Duggan, knocking Duggan senseless!
Steve Williams jumps into the ring and attacks Reed, but Sawyer and Borne toss Williams out of the ring, then, as Alfonso regains his senses, Sawyer delivers a kneedrop to the already unconscious Duggan, and covers him for the 1, 2, 3!
Butch Reed has helped Sawyer and Borne retain the Western States Tag Team titles!
END VTR
Dutch and Coss send us to our first match of the evening, taped on October 16 at the Texas State Fair in Dallas, where the American hero Sgt. Slaughter faced a masked man calling himself the Destroyer.
From the USWA Cotton Bowl Show, 10/16/87, written by TLyne
SGT. SLAUGHTER VS. THE DESTROYER. The popular Marine is all over the masked man. The Destroyer tries every underhanded trick on the book, but the Slaughter cannon sets up the cobra clutch, and the masked man is out.
“RAVISHING” RICK RUDE (w/ Percival Pringle III) VS. MARK YOUNGBLOOD. The new Western States champ has his first test since winning the title, and he has his hands full here with the Native warrior. Youngblood gains the upper hand, and goes for a tomahawk chop from the top rope, but Rude sidesteps and plants a fist into Youngblood’s stomach, doubling him over. Rude works Youngblood over, and then drops him with the Rude Awakening neckbreaker. Rude pins Youngblood for the 1, 2, 3.
Rude then pulls Youngblood up, and delivers a second neckbreaker, just for the fun of it! The referee tells Rude to cut it out, or he’ll reverse the decision.
Magnum TA is joined at ringside by Ron Simmons. Simmons talks about his football accomplishments, and says that he hopes to have the same kind of success in professional wrestling.
At that point, they’re interrupted by “Hacksaw” Butch Reed. Reed runs down Simmons, and talks about their teaming together in the past. He says that Simmons rode his coattails, and now he’s trying to do the same with Steve Williams, but Simmons has hitched his horse to the wrong horse!
Simmons interrupts him, and says that Reed should get into the ring with him, and we’ll see if he was riding Reed’s coattails!
Reed says he’ll face Simmons any time, any where! Simmons hops into the ring behind them, and challenges Reed to join him.
Reed says that he’s not prepared to wrestle right now, he’s not in his ring gear, and hasn’t properly warmed up!
Reed walks off, as Simmons calls him a coward!
OWEN HART VS. ELTON STANTON. The youngster from Calgary makes his Wild West debut, and it’s a successful one, as he pins Stanton after connecting with a top-rope dropkick.
After the match, Ron Simmons rushes over, and tells Dutch and Coss that something happened to Steve Williams in the parking lot! Simmons, Dutch and a camera man head out to the parking lot, where Jim Duggan is helping Williams up. Doc is battered and bloodied, and barely conscious. As Simmons and Duggan help Williams up and take him inside for medical attention, a group of fans nearby tell Dutch that Matt Borne and Buzz Sawyer were behind the attack, they saw the champs jump Williams as he got out of his car!
RON SIMMONS VS. THE MISSING LINK. Simmons dominates the early going, but late in the match, “Hacksaw” Butch Reed comes out and taunts Simmons. Missing Link uses the distraction to attack Simmons, but eventually Simmons turns the tables again, and connects with a Spinebuster for the 1, 2, 3!
Simmons and Reed then jaw back and forth before Reed leaves the ringside area.
WESTERN STATES TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP:
“MAD DOG” BUZZ SAWYER & “MANIAC” MATT BORNE (Champs) (w/ Percival Pringle III) VS. “HACKSAW” JIM DUGGAN & “MR. UNPREDICTABLE” DICK SLATER (replacing Steve Williams). It’s announced before the start of the match, that Steve Williams won’t be able to participate in the match. Duggan starts the match alone, but a few minutes in, he’s in a bad way, as the champions constantly double-team him.
Suddenly Dick Slater hits the ring! Slater jumps up on the apron, and Duggan tags him in!
Slater cleans house, and after working over Matt Borne, he drops Borne with a Piledriver for the 1, 2, 3!
Duggan and Slater celebrate with the belts, as Borne and Sawyer throw a fit! Percival Pringle jumps into the ring and snatches the mic from the ring announcer! He says that this wasn’t a title match, Dick Slater was NOT a part of the match!
Duggan and Slater still have the belts, and here comes Commissioner Blackjack Mulligan. Mulligan informs Duggan and Slater that, as much as he hates to admit it, Pringle is right, Slater’s name wasn’t on the contract for the match, so it was not an official sanctioned bout, so the titles weren’t on the line.
Duggan and Slater hand the belts back to the official, and Pringle snatches them out of the ref’s hand, and then taunts Duggan and Slater.
Suddenly, Duggan pounces on Pringle, and drops him with a big right hand! Sawyer and Borne attack Duggan, but Slater joins in and the two teams brawl as the show comes to an end!
Dutch and Coss wrap things up, as Duggan and Slater continue to brawl with Sawyer and Borne.
