Taped on October 12, 1987 at Holt Arena in Pocatello, ID
Brought to you by Western States Wrestling and sanctioned by the United States Wrestling Association
Dutch Savage and Don Coss are seated at a table near the ring, in front of a backdrop with the Western States Wrestling and USWA logos on it. Coss welcomes us to the campus of Idaho State University in Pocatello for WILD WEST WRESTLING!
Coss and Savage talk about tonight’s show, where we’ll take a look at a match that took place earlier this week, at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, Texas, between World champion Kerry Von Erich and the #1 contender, Freebird Terry Gordy! In tonight’s main event, the tag team titles will be on the line, as Steve Williams and Hacksaw Duggan have been granted a rematch with Western States Tag champs Buzz Sawyer and Matt Borne. Duggan and Williams defeated the champs in a non-title match last week, tonight the gold will be on the line as the two teams meet again!
Dutch hypes the card tomorrow night in Casper, Wyoming, where they will crown the first Western States champion. Savage then talks about Thanksgiving night, WSW will be at the McNichols Sports Arena in Denver, where fans can see the top wrestlers of WSW, as well as the entire “Thanksgiving Star Wars” supershow, live on CCTV.
THE NEW ZEALAND SHEEPHERDERS: BUTCH MILLER & LUKE WILLIAMS (w/ Jonathan Boyd) VS. THE KINISKI BROTHERS: NICK & KELLY. The Sheepherders win a hard-fought match, after delivering a double stomach-buster on Kelly, behind the referee’s back, then Butch delivers a kneedrop off the second turnbuckle for the pinfall.
Magnum TA joins the Sheepherders at ringside after the match. Magnum says that both Luke and Butch have been entered in the Western States title tournament tomorrow night, and he wonders what would happen if they end up having to face each other?
Butch says that it would be just like when they were growing up back in New Zealand, if one of them got mad at the other, they’d fight, if they were bored, they’d fight each other to pass the time!
Luke agrees, and says they love nothing more than a good fight, even if it’s against each other!
RON SIMMONS VS. “BRUISER” BOB SWEETAN. Bruiser Bob gives Simmons all he can handle early on, but Ron eventually gets the win, connecting with a spinebuster for the pinfall.
We see a video featuring Missy Hyatt, set to Madonna’s “Material Girl”. The video shows footage of Missy shopping, getting her hair done, and then it ends with a clip of Missy handing her purse to Eddie Gilbert, who uses it to KO Ron Simmons and win the TV title.
Dutch and Coss send us to short, pre-recorded comments from several of the wrestlers that will compete in the tournament tomorrow night for the Western States title.
“RAVISHING” RICK RUDE VS. “COWBOY” SCOTT CASEY. Rude goes through his usual bit before the match, telling the fat, out of shape Idaho idiots to zip it while he takes off his robe and shows the women in the audience what a real man is supposed to look like! As Rude removes his robe, Casey dropkicks him from behind, sending Rude through the ropes, and drawing a loud cheer from the fans! Rude yells at the referee from the floor, complaining about the attack. Casey gives Rude the opportunity to re-enter the ring, and as he does, Rude charges at Casey, but the Cowboy is ready with a lightning-quick armdrag! From there, Casey keeps Rude on the mat, working him over. A minute or so later, Casey brings Rude up to his feet, and whips him into the ropes, but Casey makes the mistake of putting his head down too early, and Rude gives him a boot to the head! Rude goes to work on Casey, choking him over the middle rope, and then later, running Casey’s face along the top rope!
Rude thinks he’s got the Casey where he wants him, and sets him up for the Rude Awakening, but before he can hit the move, Casey slips free of Rude’s grasp, then uses his arms to hook Rude’s, and leans forward, bringing Rude over, and his shoulders down to the mat in a pinning predicament. Rude kicks out at the last second, and as Casey goes to grab ahold of him, Rude delivers a low blow, dropping Casey to the mat! The Ravishing One stomps a mudhole in Casey, then picks him up, bounces off the ropes, and drops Casey right back to the mat with a clothesline. Rude pulls Casey up again, and this time, he’s able to deliver the Rude Awakening for the 1, 2, 3!
Coss and Savage talk about the tag team match that we saw last week, between Duggan & Williams and Borne & Sawyer.
VTR: Williams/Duggan vs Borne/Sawyer:
Duggan brawls with Sawyer in one corner, while Williams and Borne trade punches in another. Duggan knocks Sawyer through the ropes and to the floor, then follows him out. While they’re brawling around ringside, Williams gets the upper hand on Matt Borne, and eventually drops him with the Stampede!
Williams covers Borne, and gets the 1, 2, 3 as Duggan and Sawyer brawl outside the ring, hitting each other with anything they can get their hands on!
END VTR
WESTERN STATES TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP:
“MAD DOG” BUZZ SAWYER & “MANIAC” MATT BORNE (Champs) (w/ Percival Pringle III) VS. STEVE “DR. DEATH” WILLIAMS & “HACKSAW” JIM DUGGAN. After Duggan and Williams got the win in the non-title match last week, this one is for all the marbles! If fans thought last week’s match was wild, this one made it look tame by comparison! These two teams tear into each other as soon as the bell sounds, and don’t let up for the rest of the match. Referee Bill Alfonso has his work cut out for him, and for the most part, seems content just to let these two teams battle it out. The blood starts flowing early, first the champions bust Williams open, as they repeatedly double-team him, delivering brutal punches that open up a cut over Williams’ left eye. The blood running down his face doesn’t stop Williams from battling back, eventually sending both Borne and Sawyer out of the ring, with Williams then tagging in Duggan. Duggan and Williams then go outside after the champions, and after a brief brawl on the floor, Duggan opens up a cut on Matt Borne’s head by slamming him face-first into the ringpost!
Late in the match, referee Alfonso is knocked down, and “Hacksaw” Butch Reed sprints down to the ring! Inside the ring, Hacksaw Duggan has the advantage on Buzz Sawyer, pummeling the Mad Dog in the corner. Butch Reed jumps into the ring and, with a taped object in his hand, delivers a knock-out punch to the head of Hacksaw Duggan, knocking Duggan senseless!
Steve Williams jumps into the ring and attacks Reed, but Sawyer and Borne toss Williams out of the ring, then, as Alfonso regains his senses, Sawyer delivers a kneedrop to the already unconscious Duggan, and covers him for the 1, 2, 3!
Butch Reed has helped Sawyer and Borne retain the Western States Tag Team titles!
After the match, Coss and Dutch are joined at the announce table by Percy Pringle, Buzz Sawyer, Matt Borne and Butch Reed.
As Sawyer and Borne taunt Duggan and Williams, who are still in the ring, Percy Pringle gloats about the win, saying that he said all along that Williams and Duggan didn’t have what it takes to beat his champions, and now that they’ve had their shot, Pringle says that they’re moving on to new challengers.
Pringle then introduces Hacksaw Butch Reed as the newest member of his stable, and says his Dynasty is almost complete!
As Percy is talking, Hacksaw Duggan and Steve Williams charge over from the ring, and the brawl is on! Percy watches as his three men brawl all over the place with Duggan and Williams, as Dutch sends us to a commercial break!
Back from the break, Dutch says it’s time for our final match, from earlier this week at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, Texas, Terry Gordy challenges Kerry Von Erich for the World heavyweight championship!
Taped 10/16/87 in Dallas, TX:
USWA WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP:
KERRY VON ERICH (Champ) VS. TERRY “BAM BAM” GORDY. The World Champion comes to the ring. Lubich goes through instructions, and both men stare holes through each other. The bell rings and we are underway. They lock up, and Gordy grabs a side headlock. Gordy can match Von Erich in the strength department. Kerry shoots Gordy into the ropes, and drops him with a shoulder tackle. Kerry goes to work on Gordy’s leg. Terry gets to the ropes and Libich calls for the break. They lock up again, and this time Gordy grabs the edge. He pounds away at the Champion, and Kerry is in real trouble. Gordy slams him, and goes for an elbow drop. Von Erich rolls out of the way, and Gordy crashes to the mat. Kerry goes for a cover, but Gordy kicks out. Terry works his way into position for a piledriver. Kerry blocks it, and backdrops the Challenger. That took a lot out of both men, and they are both prone on the mat. Lubich starts the count. Both men struggle to their feet at seven. They begin to trade lefts and rights. Kerry is able to trap Gordy in a sleep hold. Gordy rights his way to the ropes, and Bronko calls for the break. Kerry now thinks he has the edge. He Tera's into Gordy. “Bam Bam” fires back. Both men are on the ropes, and they tumble through them. They land on the Cotton Bowl turf. They get to their feet, and continue to brawl. Lubich starts his count. Both men continue to slug it out. Lubich reaches 20. He reluctantly calls for the bell. Both men have been counted out. This was a great match, but nothing has been settled.
Dutch and Coss wrap things up, and hype next week’s show. Dutch reminds the fans in the Casper, Wyoming area that they’ll be at the Casper Event Center tomorrow night to crown the very first Western States champion!
