WSW WILD WEST WRESTLING
Airdate: Friday night, October 14, 1987 on local stations throughout the western US and Canada
Taped on October 12, 1987 at Holt Arena in Pocatello, ID
Brought to you by Western States Wrestling and sanctioned by the United States Wrestling Association
Dutch Savage and Don Coss are seated at a table near the ring, in front of a backdrop with the Western States Wrestling and USWA logos on it. Coss welcomes us to the campus of Idaho State University in Pocatello, Idaho for WILD WEST WRESTLING!
Dutch says that we’re about six weeks away from Thanksgiving, and on Thanskgiving, Western States Wrestling will be at the McNichols Sports Arena in Denver for a huge night of wrestling! Not only will fans in attendance that night see several bouts featuring the top wrestlers in WSW, but as a special treat, the USWA supershow “Thanksgiving Star Wars” will be shown live via closed circuit as well! The Western States matches, and the line-up for Thanksgiving Star Wars, will be announced in the coming weeks.
Don Coss says fans will want to get their tickets right away for that one, as they definitely won’t last long!
Coss then says that last week, the first Western States Television champion was crowned, as Eddie Gilbert stole a victory from Ron Simmons.
VTR: Eddie Gilbert vs Ron Simmons, JIP:
Missy Hyatt looks worried at ringside, and complains to referee Bill Alfonso that Simmons is cheating, but Alfonso just ignores her. As Simmons goes at Gilbert, Eddie wisely bails out of the ring, and goes to confer with Missy. When Simmons follows him out, Gilbert shows what kind of man he is by USING MISSY AS A SHIELD!!!! Gilbert shoves Missy towards Simmons, then scurries back into the ring. When Simmons follows him back in, Gilbert pounces, again kicking Simmons repeatedly. Simmons is on all fours, and Simmons cradles him for another attempted pinfall, but again Simmons kicks out.
The match goes on like this, every time Simmons gets the upper hand, Eddie uses an underhanded tactic to take control again, only to see Simmons rebound. Late in the match, as Simmons and Gilbert brawl along the ropes, Bill Alfonso catches a stray elbow and is knocked to the mat. Simmons delivers a powerslam on Gilbert moments later, but when he covers Eddie, he realizes there’s no referee. As he tries to wake Alfonso up, Missy hands her purse to Gilbert, who cracks Simmons over the head with it! Obviously there was something in the purse, as Simmons falls to the mat, out cold. Bill Alfonso slowly gets to his feet, and then sees Gilbert covering Simmons. Alfonso is slow to make the count, but it doesn’t matter, Simmons is out like a light.
Eddie Gilbert gets the 3-count, and becomes the first Western States Television Champion!
END VTR
When the video ends, Coss and Savage are joined by the new TV champ “Hot Stuff” Eddie Gilbert and his valet Missy Hyatt.
Eddie takes a moment to admire the belt, then gloats about his victory. Dutch says that it wasn’t without controversy, as Eddie used Missy’s obviously loaded purse to knock Simmons into next week.
Eddie says that he’s in such a good mood, even Dutch and his lies can’t ruin it! He says that there was nothing unusual in Missy’s purse, and to prove it, he has Missy dump out the contents of her purse onto the announcer’s table!
Gilbert says that as everyone can see, it’s just a regular old flimsy purse, and the fact that it knocked Simmons out cold proves that Ron obviously isn’t as tough as everyone seems to think he is!
Dutch says that Gilbert wouldn’t mind, then, giving Simmons a rematch for the belt?
Gilbert says that Simmons had his chance, and he blew it. Now he’s got new challengers lining up, men far more deserving of a title shot than Ron Simmons.
Savage then asks Gilbert about the fact that earlier in the match, he used Missy as a human shield.
Gilbert says that Dutch is really trying to stir up trouble tonight, and then he and Missy walk off.
BILLY JACK HAYNES & “COWBOY” SCOTT CASEY VS. KERRY BROWN & “BRUISER” BOB SWEETAN. Billy Jack gets a nice ovation from the Idaho fans, many of them remembering him from his days with Pacific Northwest Wrestling, and the occasional PNW shows in Idaho. Brown and Sweetan are looking to redeem themselves after losing a very competitive match last week, and they attack before the bell, looking to get the upper hand. Brown and Sweetan pummel Casey, but Billy Jack quickly clears them both from the ring. As the match progresses, Billy Jack and Casey take control of the match, and eventually Billy Jack locks Brown in the Full Nelson for the submission victory.
“RAVISHING” RICK RUDE VS. KELLY KINISKI. Rude goes through his usual bit before the match, telling the fat, out of shape Idaho idiots to zip it while he takes off his robe and shows the women in the audience what a real man is supposed to look like! Kiniski gives Rude his toughest challenge to date, but in the end, Rude gets the win after connecting with the Rude Awakening.
After the match, Magnum TA conducts a ringside interview with Rude. The Ravishing One says that he’s going to be a part of the Western States title tournament next Saturday night, and promises Magnum that he’ll leave Casper as the Western States champion!
Savage and Coss are joined by “Hacksaw” Jim Duggan and “Dr. Death” Steve Williams. Dutch says that they’ll face Buzz Sawyer and Matt Borne in a non-title match in tonight’s main event. Williams says that he and Duggan can’t wait to get their hands on Sawyer and Borne, and then talks about the fact that Percy Pringle has been badmouthing him for weeks, and Williams says if he gets his hands on Pringle, he’s going to shut him up, once and for all!
Dutch asks Duggan about the comments made by the other Hacksaw in WSW, Butch Reed, on last week’s show. Duggan says that if Butch Reed wants to find out just how tough he is, then all he’s got to do is get in the ring with him!
STEVE DOLL VS. JACK VICTORY. Doll is an impressive youngster, and on commentary, Dutch Savage predicts big things for him as his career progresses. Doll gets the win here, catching Victory with a sunset flip as Jack charged at him in the corner, for the 1, 2, 3.
Magnum TA is standing by backstage with Percival Pringle III and the Western States Tag Team champions “Mad Dog” Buzz Sawyer & “Maniac” Matt Borne. Magnum asks Percy about the non-title match tonight against Steve Williams and Jim Duggan. Percy says that he can see why these Western States fans identify with men like Duggan and Williams, they’re big, brawny guys, but when it comes to smarts, their IQ matches their shoe size . . . just like these people here in the West! Pringle says that he and his champions might just take these belts and go back to the southeast, where the people are smart enough to appreciate their talent!
Percy says that there’s no question of who will this match tonight, his men are going to humiliate Williams and Duggan, and just like he told Magnum last week, they are going to make Steve Williams pay for disrespecting him, they’re going to break him down, bit by bit, before they finish the job and end Williams’ pathetic career for good!
Magnum asks Buzz Sawyer about the Western States title tournament, which he will be a part of. Sawyer says that after the tournament next Saturday night, he’s going to be a double champion!
We go back to ringside with Coss and Savage. Young Dean Malenko is already in the ring, and we hear Donna Summers’ “Hot Stuff”, which means the TV champion is on his way to the ring.
WESTERN STATES TELEVISION CHAMPIONSHIP:
“HOT STUFF” EDDIE GILBERT (w/ Missy Hyatt) VS. DEAN MALENKO. Malenko, while not having a great win-loss record, has improved with each and every match. Here he takes Gilbert down to the mat and works him over to start the match. Gilbert gets back to his feet, and jabs a thumb into Malenko’s eye, stopping him in his tracks. From there, Gilbert goes to work on Malenko. Dean fights back, but when he charges at Gilbert, Eddie delivers the Hot Shot and gets the pinfall.
Dutch and Coss talk about the 10-man tournament coming up next Saturday night in Casper, WY to crown the first Western States champion. Dutch runs down the 10 wrestlers that will take part in the tournament:
“Hacksaw” Jim Duggan
“Mad Dog” Buzz Sawyer
Ron Simmons
“Ravishing” Rick Rude
Steve Doll
The New Zealand Sheepherders: Butch Miller and Luke Williams
“Hacksaw” Butch Reed
“Dr. Death” Steve Williams
And, making his first appearance in Western States, a man who has made a name for himself all across the country, “Mr. Unpredictable” Dick Slater
NON-TITLE MATCH:
“MAD DOG” BUZZ SAWYER & “MANIAC” MATT BORNE (w/ Percival Pringle III) VS. STEVE “DR. DEATH” WILLIAMS & “HACKSAW” JIM DUGGAN. This is a wild, back and forth brawl. The referee has his work cut out for him, trying to maintain law and order. In the end, Dr. Death and Hacksaw get the win when Williams pins Borne after the Stampede, while Duggan brawls with Sawyer on the arena floor.
Dutch and Coss wrap things up, and hype next week’s show. Dutch reminds the fans in the Casper, Wyoming area that they’ll want to get their tickets for next Saturday night, October 22, as we’ll see the first Western States champion crowned that night at the Casper Events Center!
