Taped on September 28, 1987 at the Coliseum in Denver, CO
Brought to you by Western States Wrestling and sanctioned by the United States Wrestling Association
Dutch Savage and Don Coss are seated at a table near the ring, in front of a backdrop with the Western States Wrestling and USWA logos on it. Coss welcomes us back to Denver, Colorado for WILD WEST WRESTLING!
Dutch Savage says that Rocky Mountain Wrestling has expanded, all the way to the west coast, and with the expansion comes a name change! Don Owen has changed the name of the promotion to Western States Wrestling, and this television show to “Wild West Wrestling”! He says that he can’t think of a more fitting name, as the fans can expect the wildest wrestling action each and every week!
Coss says that tonight, we will see a special 20-man, 2-ring Battle Royal! 10 wrestlers will compete in each ring, the last man left standing in each ring will face off next week to crown the first Western States Television champion!
Dutch talks about what transpired last week, and sends us to the video.
VTR: Last Week on Rocky Mountain Wrestling
Coss and Dutch send us to Straight Shootin’ with Magnum TA.
Magnum introduces his guest this week, Percival Pringle III. Pringle addresses the boos from the fans, saying that he is from Alabama, he’s a Southern gentleman, and he has class, something these rednecks know nothing about! He says that they spend their days shovelling manure, and yet they have the audacity to come out here and boo him?!?! He says that these people, and this entire city, smell like a barn!
Magnum starts to respond, but Percy cuts him off.
Percy says that he’s not here to talk about these people, he wants to discuss something that actually matters. Percy says that last week, he made an offer to Steve Williams, he offered Williams the opportunity to be the cornerstone of the Pringle Dynasty, and the man that brings him the Rocky Mountain title. He says that Williams made a bad decision, but now he’s had a week to think about it, and he he knows that Dr. Death has realized the error of his ways, and is ready to accept his spot in the Dynasty.
This brings “Dr. Death” Steve Williams out.
Pringle is all smiles, and says that he’s glad to see Williams has made the right decision after all!
Williams tells Percy that he made the right decision . . . last week. He says that he gave Pringle his answer, he doesn’t need time to think about it, Doc says he wants nothing to do with Pringle or his so-called Dynasty, and then turns and walks off.
Percy is LIVID!
Magnum starts to ask him a question, but Pringle tells him to shut up, and goes on a tirade, saying that he was wrong about Doc, Williams is obviously an idiot, he is from Denver after all! He says that Doc could’ve joined him, and been a part of the greatest group in wrestling history, but now, Doc is public enemy #1 and Pringle is going to make sure that Williams’ career is a short one!
END VTR
Dutch says that, as a result, Percival Pringle has gone to commissioner Blackjack Mulligan, and demanded a match between Doctor Death and Pringle’s Mad Dog, Buzz Sawyer! Mulligan signed the match, and we’ll see Williams and Sawyer face off here tonight!
“HACKSAW” JIM DUGGAN VS. DOUG VINES. Vines is no slouch, and he tries to gain the early advantage by attacking Duggan from behind before the opening bell. Vines stomps away at Duggan, but Hacksaw soon fights his way back to his feet, and takes the fight to Vines. Vines tries to climb out of the ring, but Duggan grabs him by the hair, and drags him back through the ropes and into the ring, where he continues to pummel him. Moments later, Duggan hits the football tackle and covers Vines for the 1, 2, 3.
Coss and Savage are joined by the New Zealand Sheepherders: Luke Williams, Butch Miller & Jonathan Boyd. Boyd does all the talking for the trio. He says that his cousins gave Jim Duggan and Steve Williams the fight of their lives a couple of weeks ago on the debut show, but since then, have they got any competition? No! They’ve got a match later on against a couple of nobodies, but where is their rematch with Duggan and Williams? Where is their Tag Team title match? Boyd says that they’ve decided to take matters into their own hands, and a lot of people are gonna start getting hurt around here, unless they get some competition!
BUTCH REED VS. ART BARR. Reed’s debut is a successful one, as he puts the talented youngster away with a diving shoulderblock from the top turnbuckle for the 1, 2, 3.
Coss and Dutch send us to Magnum TA and “Straight Shootin’ with Magnum”.
Magnum welcomes his guests this week, two men that fans in the Southwest are very familiar with, but may not be as well known outside of that area . . . “Cowboy” Scott Casey and Mando Guerrero. Magnum shakes hands with both men.
Casey says that coming to Western States Wrestling gives him a chance to compete in front of all these great fans outside of the Southwest, who may not have had the chance to see him before, as well as their neighbours to the North in Canada. He talks a little bit about western Canada, and says that he was in Calgary this past July for the Stampede, and puts Calgary over as a beautiful city.
Mando says that these fans have always supported him and his family, no matter where they’ve wrestled, and he hopes that the fans all across the territory will continue to support him here. He talks about the fact that Scott Casey has been a family friend for many years, and he knows we'll be seeing Casey wearing championship gold sooner rather than later.
The two shake hands as Magnum wishes them both luck here in Western States Wrestling.
Back at the announce table, Dutch Savage says that he’s very familiar with both Casey and Mando, and says that they’ve had a lot of success in their individual careers, and he thinks that will continue here in Western States Wrestling.
Coss says it’s time for the first of our two feature matches, as 20 men compete for a shot at becoming the first Western States Television champion!
20-MAN, 2-RING BATTLE ROYAL. After the 20 participants are announced, ring announcer Barry Owen reminds us that the last man left standing in each ring will move on to a match next week to crown the first Television champion!
In ring one, we’ve got: Art Barr, Billy Jack Haynes, “Ravishing” Rick Rude, “Hot Stuff” Eddie Gilbert, Nick Kiniski, Kelly Kiniski, Steve Doll, Doug Vines, Butch Reed, and Rip Oliver.
In ring two: “Hacksaw” Jim Duggan, Dean Malenko, Brad Batten, Bart Batten, Jeff Sword, Ron Simmons, Scott Peterson, “Playboy” Buddy Rose, David Schultz, and “Maniac” Matt Borne.
Percival Pringle III is ringside, supporting his charge, Matt Borne.
When the bell sounds, it’s pandemonium! We see a couple of quick eliminations in ring 1, as Doug Vines and Rip Oliver are thrown out, Vines by the Kiniski brothers, and Oliver by Billy Jack Haynes. Scott Peterson is the first to go in ring 2, as Ron Simmons throws him out. On commentary, Coss and Savage talk about Simmons being a protégé of Steve Williams, and they wonder if that puts him in the crosshairs of Percy Pringle III. They get their answer a moment later, as Matt Borne jumps Simmons from behind and tries to eliminate him. Simmons stays in, and turns the tables on Borne. As Simmons tries to push Borne over the top, Percy Pringle is on the floor, trying to push Borne back in!
This brings out commissioner Blackjack Mulligan, and he tells Pringle to take a hike! Pringle refuses, initially, but Mulligan moves towards him menacingly, and Pringle decides to reconsider, and he scampers off as the ringside fans laugh at him.
Meanwhile, this has got Matt Borne’s attention, and this gives Ron Simmons the opportunity to grab Borne and toss him over the top and to the floor. That leaves us with 8 wrestlers in each ring.
In ring 1, Kelly Kiniski and Art Barr are both eliminated, as Kiniski tries to push Barr over, but before he can get him out, Steve Doll dropkicks Kiniski in the back, sending Kelly and Barr over the top and tumbling to the floor. Moments later, Butch Reed and Rick Rude team up to eliminate Billy Jack Haynes.
Over in ring 2, Buddy Rose eliminates Brad Batten, while Brad’s brother Bart is eliminated moments later by David Schultz. Dean Malenko then eliminates Jeff Sword, leaving us with 5 wrestlers in each ring.
In ring 1, Rick Rude and Nick Kiniski are both eliminated, as Rude throws Kiniski over the top, but he lands on the apron. Rude charges at him, attempting to knock Kiniski off the apron, but Kiniski ducks, pulling the top rope down as he does, and Rude tumbles over the top, but grabs ahold of Kiniski, pulling him off the apron as well, and both men hit the floor.
In the other ring, Buddy Rose and David Schultz team up to eliminate Jim Duggan, then Rose eliminates Dean Malenko. We’re down to Rose, Schultz and Ron Simmons in ring 2. Rose and Schultz gang up on Simmons and pummel him, but when Schultz holds Simmons while Rose winds up and throws a haymaker, Simmons ducks, and Rose connects with Schultz instead! Schultz falls backwards over the top rope and to the floor, and Ron Simmons grabs the stunned Playboy, and tosses him out as well! Ron Simmons has won ring 2!
Back in ring 1, Butch Reed is trying to shove Steve Doll over the top rope, but Doll has his arms and legs around the ropes, holding on for dear life. Eddie Gilbert, the only other man in the ring, sees his opportunity, and comes up behind Reed, shoving Reed and Doll over the top rope! “Hot Stuff” Eddie Gilbert has won ring 1!
Savage and Coss talk about the match we just saw, and hype the Ron Simmons vs Eddie Gilbert match that will take place next week for the Television title. Savage says that Simmons has the size and strength advantage, but he’s still early in his career, so Gilbert has the edge in experience, and that could make all the difference next week.
THE NEW ZEALAND SHEEPHERDERS: BUTCH MILLER & LUKE WILLIAMS (w/ Jonathan Boyd) VS. ART BARR & DEAN MALENKO. The Sheepherders pounce on Barr and Malenko as soon as the bell sounds, and give the two youngsters a vicious beating! On commentary, Coss mentions that Barr and Malenko were both participants in the last match, while the Sheepherders are fresh. Barr and Malenko get some offence in as the match progresses, but in the end, the sheer savagery of the Sheepherders is too much for them to overcome, and Luke and Butch get the win after Butch delivers a kneedrop from the second rope to the head of Art Barr for the 1, 2, 3.
Coss and Savage are joined at the announce table by Ron Simmons. Ron talks about the match coming up next week with Eddie Gilbert, and says that he’s been training with Steve Williams and Jim Duggan, and he feels that he’s ready for Gilbert next week!
After Simmons leaves the announce area, Coss and Savage are joined by Eddie Gilbert, who introduces us to his valet, Missy Hyatt. Gilbert says that Missy will be at ringside next week to watch him beat, and humiliate, Ron Simmons!
“MAD DOG” BUZZ SAWYER (w/ Percival Pringle III) VS. “DR. DEATH” STEVE WILLIAMS. This one is a real slobberknocker! These are two tough, rugged individuals, and they hit each other with everything they’ve got. Late in the match, Williams has the upper hand, and Matt Borne makes his way out to ringside. Williams connects with a running clothesline on Sawyer, and goes for the pin, but Borne puts Sawyer’s foot on the bottom rope, then points it out to the referee.
This brings out Jim Duggan! Duggan grabs Borne, and repeatedly slams his head into the ring apron! This distracts Buzz Sawyer long enough for Doctor Death to roll him up for the 1, 2, 3!
Sawyer is livid! As Williams is getting his hand raised, Sawyer attacks him from behind and the two brawl. Outside the ring, Jim Duggan has the upper hand as he brawls with Matt Borne, and moments later, they’re joined by Williams and Sawyer on the floor!
As the four men brawl all around ringside, Coss and Savage wrap things up, and quickly hype next week’s show.
