Controversy Reigns After Wrestling Action Friday Night
Honolulu Star Advertiser
By Kay Fabien
This past Friday's Pacific Pro Wrestling Card at the Blaisdale Center saw it's share of controversy in the Hawaiian Championship match between Siva Afi and The Zodiac. Afi came into the bout as the defending champion, but left without his title belt and several reasons to be upset. He and Zodiac battled for more than 13:00 before Zodiac walked away as the new champion. The controversy came when Afi missed a flying splash from the top rope and Zodiac dove in for the pinfall. Referee Marc Curtis counted the pin and awarded the bout and the title to Zodiac, but defending champion Afi had one foot draped over the bottom rope which should have stopped the count. Curtis claims he did not see this and the decision currently stands, with Zodiac being recognized as the new Hawaiian Champion. A rematch between Zodiac and Afi has already been ordered and signed for next Friday night at the Blaisdale Center.
In other action...
In the main event of the evening, Pacific Heavyweight Champion Nick Bockwinkle and challenger Don "The Rock" Muraco battled to a double count out after 25:00 of intense action. Muraco had a sleeper hold locked in on the champion, who fell through the ropes to the floor, but Muraco held on to his hold and ended up on the floor with the champion. He still didn't release the hold and both men were counted out, ending the match. Muraco put Bockwinkle out with the hold, and Bockwinkle had to be revived. After the bout, I got a work with Muraco who said that he just proved he could beat Bockwinkle, and wants another match for the title. Since titles cannot change hands on anything except a pinfall or a submission, Bockwinkle retained the title.
Pacific Tag Team Champions, Haku and Tama, faced possibly their stiffest challenge yet as they tangled with the rough Starr Brothers, Ron & Chicky. The challengers put the pressure on the champions and looked to have the bout won on several occasions, but quick timing by The Islanders prevented that from happening. The Starr Brothers picked up the decision however when Haku and Tama were disqualified when Tama threw Chicky Starr over the top rope at 16:04. Chicky was charging at Tama when Tama ducked and lifted his shoulder, propelling Starr over the top rope and to the floor.
"Mr. Electricity" Steve Regal retained the Pacific Junior Heavyweight title over former champion Denny Brown in a bout that went 11:22. Brown attempted a leap frog maneuver but Regal caught him and dropped him throat first onto the top ring rope and gained the pinfall victory.
Young Tahitian Warrior scored somewhat of an upset when he pinned Kendo Nagasaki after 8:09 of action.
In a six man tag team bout, UFO & The Galaxians teamed up to defeat the threesome of David Sammartino, Johnny Ace, and "The World's Strongest Man" Doug Furnas.
The Atomic Kid scored a victory over "Flyin" Fuji Yamada, and in the process, put himself at the front of the line of challengers for the Pacific Junior Heavyweight Belt.
In the opening bout, newcomer Brady Boone showed his skills as he gained a win over Cactus Jack Manson in 10:44.
Pacific Pro Wrestling returns to the Blaisdale Center next Friday night at 8:00 PM.
