WORLD WRESTLING FEDERATION
JULY 1987:
WWF WORLD TITLE SCENE:
Throughout July, Ted Dibiase defended his newly-won WWF World heavyweight title on the house show market against the man he beat in the finals for the belt, “Macho Man” Randy Savage. Dibiase won most of the matches, but these wins were usually tainted by outside interference by Virgil, Bobby Heenan, or another member of the Heenan Family.
Near the end of the month on TV, WWF President Jack Tunney informed Dibiase and Heenan that the Million Dollar Man would be defending the World title at SummerSlam, but as to the identity of the challenger, at this time, Tunney would only say that it’s a “former WWF star”. Meanwhile, Randy Savage was looking for a rematch with Dibiase as well, but Bobby Heenan informed Savage that, if they were even going to CONSIDER giving the Macho Man another shot at the belt, Savage would first have to go through the newest member of the Heenan Family, Big John Studd, at SummerSlam. Studd promised Heenan that he would squash Savage like an insect at the Pay-Per-View on August 28.
WWF INTERCONTINENTAL TITLE SCENE:
The Ultimate Warrior continued his rise to the top of the WWF in July, as the new Intercontinental champion defended the belt against all challengers. His main title defences were against former champ Larry Zbyszko, with the Warrior holding onto the belt during those house show matches.
WWF WORLD TAG TEAM TITLE SCENE:
Demolition defended the World Tag Team titles against the Hart Foundation, the Rockers and the returning British Bulldogs throughout July.
OTHER HAPPENINGS:
1. On the July 30 edition of WWF Superstars, Brutus Beefcake said he would bring out a contract the following week for Jake Roberts to sign, for a Steel Cage match at SummerSlam. Later in the show, Mean Gene interviewed Jake, who seemed pleased with the idea of facing Brutus in a Cage on August 28.
2. Johnny Ace won a surprisingly tough match over young Todd Champion on WWF Superstars late in the month, and afterwards, Ace and his tag team partner Terry Taylor, gave the young man a vicious beating. Scott Hall was providing guest commentary with Vince and Jesse for the match, and he rushed into the ring to help Champion. The following week, Scott Hall challenged Taylor and Ace to face him and Todd Champion in the ring.
3. The Hart Foundation continued their feud with Jimmy Hart’s newest tag team, the Nasty Boys. The matches between the two teams ere always wild and violent, and most ended in a disqualification or count-out decision
