Airdate: Saturday, July 9, 1987 on the USA Network
Taped on July 6, 1987 at the Market Square Arena in Indianapolis, IN
Before the opening of the show, we see footage of Ted Dibiase riding in a limousine, the WWF World title belt over his shoulder. Dibiase brags about his victory at the Wrestling Classic and says he will become the greatest heavyweight champion in wrestling history!
Vince McMahon and Jesse “the Body” Ventura are at ringside, and welcome us to Indianapolis, Indiana for this week’s episode of WWF Superstars.
Vince and Jesse discuss today’s show, including the main event, where the Hart Foundation will attempt to regain the World Tag Team titles from Demolition.
Vince talks about the video we saw at the top of the program, and says that Ted Dibiase did indeed win the tournament for the vacant World heavyweight title last Saturday at the Wrestling Classic, but the final match was not without some controversy.
We see footage of Dibiase pinning Randy Savage with the Million $ Dream, after Virgil sucker punched Savage from the ring apron.
Vince says that Virgil made his presence felt during the final moments of the match, leading directly to Dibiase getting the pinfall.
Jesse says it doesn’t matter, Dibiase won the match, he’s the champion, that’s all that matters, nobody cares about how he won, just that he DID win. Vince says that he thinks Randy Savage might disagree with Jesse’s assessment.
Ventura then says that the Heenan Family will be holding a special celebration, right here on WWF Superstars, in honour of Dibiase’s title win.
Vince says that not everything went according to plan for the Heenan Family at the Wrestling Classic.
We see footage of the Ultimate Warrior pinning Larry Zbyszko to win the WWF IC title.
Vince says that the Ultimate Warrior is the brand new Intercontinental champion, and already there are challengers lining up for a shot at the belt, and at the front of the line, the former champion Larry Zbyszko.
Jesse doubts Warrior’s reign will last long, and the belt will soon be back around the waist of Larry Zbyszko.
THE BRITISH BULLDOGS: DAVEY BOY SMITH & DYNAMITE KID VS. TERRY GIBBS & TOMMY SHARPE. The Bulldogs make their return to the WWF after almost two years away, and it’s a successful return, as Dynamite pins Tommy Sharpe after a superplex.
“OUTLAW” BOBBY JAGGERS VS. BRIAN LUCAS. Jaggers makes short work of his opponent, dropping Lucas with the Hangman’s neckbreaker for the pinfall victory.
Mean Gene Okerlund is backstage with “Macho Man” Randy Savage and Miss Elizabeth. Savage talks about the loss to Ted Dibiase in the finals of the World title tournament, and says that Dibiase needed outside interference to beat him. Savage says Dibiase had better enjoy his title reign while it lasts, because the Macho Man is coming for the title.
WWF INTERCONTINENTAL CHAMPIONSHIP:
THE ULTIMATE WARRIOR (champ) VS. CARL STYLES. Warrior gets the win in about 90 seconds, after pressing Styles over his head with the Gorilla Press slam, then delivering a splash for the pinfall victory.
TERRY TAYLOR & JOHNNY ACE (w/ Bobby Heenan) VS. JERRY ALLEN & MARIO VALENZUELA. Taylor gets the win for his team, after hitting Allen with the diving forearm smash for the pinfall.
Vince and Jesse talk about Piledriver: the Wrestling Album II, which will be on sale on September 21, and features songs by some of the biggest stars of the WWF. Jesse is upset that he wasn’t asked to sing on the album, since he’s probably the most talented singer of anyone in the WWF, with the possible exception of the Honky Tonk Man, who has a song on the album. Jesse says that Vince even sings on the album, though Jesse says it sounds more like someone strangling a cat than singing.
Vince tells Jesse not to be such a poor sport about it, and says that maybe the producers of next year’s album will ask him to record a song for it.
We go to pre-recorded comments from the Hart Foundation: Bret Hart & Jim Neidhart. They talk about how their match with the Nasty Boys ended at the Wrestling Classic, and promise to show the Nasty Boys that they can get just as nasty as Knobbs and Sags! Bret and Neidhart then talk about today’s feature match, where they’ll challenge Demolition for the WWF Tag Team titles.
Mean Gene Okerlund is backstage with WWF Tag Team champions Demolition: Ax & Smash and their manager Mr. Fuji. Fuji says that Demolition will take the Hart Foundation apart, piece by piece!
BRUTUS “THE BARBER” BEEFCAKE VS. MIKE BOYETTE. Brutus locks Boyette in the Sleeperhold for the submission win.
During the bout, an insert promo airs from Jake “the Snake” Roberts, who gloats about all the punishment he’s inflicted on Brutus, and says the worst is yet to come, and promises to end Brutus’ career, just like he did Hulk Hogan’s!
The entire Heenan Family is in the ring. Bobby Heenan says that he has some good news for the humanoids, he says that the Heenan Family is expanding! He says that for years, there’s been one man that has proven time and again that he is the giant of the wrestling world, and it wasn’t that long ago that the WWF fans had the pleasure of watching this man compete here in the World Wrestling Federation. Bobby then introduces the giant of professional wrestling . . . Big John Studd!
Dibiase, Virgil, Zbyszko, Taylor and Ace all shake Studd’s hand and slap him on the back as he joins them.
Heenan then talks about the Wrestling Classic, and says that they did have one disappointment, and gives Zbyszko a sharp look, but says that Ted Dibiase came through for them, and brought the biggest prize in wrestling, the WWF World title, to the Heenan Family!
The other members of the Heenan Family hoist Dibiase up on their shoulders, as confetti falls from the rafters, and Dibiase holds the WWF title belt up over his head!
Suddenly, Macho Man Randy Savage storms the ring, and grabs the mic out of Heenan’s hand. Savage says that Dibiase needed outside interference to beat him, he couldn’t beat Savage one on one, and Savage says he wants another shot at the belt . . . right here next week on TV!
Dibiase is put back down, takes the mic from Savage. Dibiase says that he’s a fair man, so he’ll give Savage one last shot at the belt, but doubts Savage will be in any shape to face him . . .
With that, the entire Heenan Family pounces on Savage!! The Macho Man tries to fight them off, throwing rights and lefts with wild abandon, but the Heenan Family quickly overwhelm the Macho Man and pound him into the match!
Here comes the cavalry, as the Ultimate Warrior, Scott Hall and Tony Atlas all hit the ring and brawl with the Heenan Family, eventually clearing the ring, before helping Savage up to his feet, and to the locker room.
WWF TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP:
DEMOLITION: AX & SMASH (champs)(w/ Mr. Fuji) VS. THE HART FOUNDATION: BRET HART & JIM NEIDHART. Demolition gets the win by count-out when, as the two teams brawl on the floor, Mr. Fuji hits Bret with his cane. Ax and Smash slide back into the ring to beat the count, but Bret is unable to return to the ring, and the champions get the win by count-out.
Vince and Jesse wrap things up, and hype next week’s show.
