May/Early June 1987 CWA Catchup
CWA World Title: Jerry Lawler was cleared by his doctor to return to action on May 1st, but Terry Funk took advantage of the 30 day rule and said that he was taking time off. Funk also said that the King needed to “work his way back into contention” by wrestling 4 top contenders of Funk's choosing! Lawler agreed to that and on the Mid South Coliseum cards in May, Lawler defeated Bob Orton, Jr., Dutch Mantel, Killer Khan, & Dory Funk, Jr! Finally, on June 6th, Terry Funk defended the World Title against Lawlerin a 2/3 falls match. Funk took the first fall by reversing an inside cradle. Lawler took the second fall via submission to a leg grapevine. Lawler won the third fall and regained the CWA World Title when he pinned Funk after a piledriver that he executed while the referee was arguing with Dory Funk, Jr. at ringside! Terry demanded a rematch, stating that Lawler used an illegal move to win the match!
CWA World Tag Team Titles: Bad Company (Paul Diamond & Pat Tanaka) spent most of May holding off the challenge of the Texas Broncos(Sam Houston & Kendall Windham). On June 4th's TV show, Jimmy Valiant & Bugsy McGraw shocked the world by beating Bad Company for the belts! Diamond & Tanaka immediately blamed manager Ron Wright for the loss and fired him! The next week, on TV, they signed a managerial contract with “Number One” Paul Jones! Ron Wright came out and begged them to reconsider, only to be slapped by Jones! Wright teamed up with Valiant & McGraw to take on Jones & Bad Company the next Monday at the Coliseum. Jones, Tanaka, & Diamond won. Wright disappeared from the area soon afterward! Valiant & McGraw have managed to hold off Bad Co. in rematches.
Southern Title: Jeff Jarrett thrilled the fans by upsetting Bill Dundee for the Southern Title at the Louisville Gardens on May 10! Jarrett gave Dundee a series of rematches and won them all. On May 28th's TV, Jarrett was talking about an upcoming title match with Adrian Street when the Exotic One attacked him! Then, Street painted Jarrett's face with makeup as Miss Linda applauded! Street beat Jarrett for the belt on Memorial Day as Jarrett blacked out in Street's cobra clutch. Street and Linda again humiliated Jarrett by applying makeup and putting a dress on Jeff! To add insult to injury, Street & Linda painted the belt pink on TV the next week!
Mid America Title: Shane Douglas successfully defended his titlethrough the month of May against opponent including Dennis Condrey, Dutch Mantel, Bob Orton Jr., and Bill Dundee. Finally, Douglas' reign came to and end as June began when Al Perez beat him at Mid South Coliseum. Perez looks like he will have his hands full as Douglas and newcomer Tito Santana are calling him out during TV interviews.
Valiant/Street feud: During a TV interview, Jimmy Valiant told a wild story about his senior prom where he and his date for the evening got into a fight with another couple. Valiant & Big Mama challenged Street & Linda to a “prom night match” where they would fight it out wearing tuxedos and prom dresses and the match would go until somebody was stripped to their underwear! Valiant & Mama won when Valaint ripped off Street's tux and revealed pink underwear, garter belts, and stockings! As you've already read, both Valiant and Street moved on to other things afterwards.
Idol/Mr. Magnificent feud: Austin Idol met Kevin Kelly in a match where the only way to win was via either man's finishing hold: Las Vegas Leglock or full nelson. Idol got the submission on Mr.Magnificent with the figure four and Kelly had to be carted out on a stretcher afterwards! Fallen Angel swore revenge! On the following Saturday's TV, Idol removed his mask. His hair was still quite short, but he was no longer bald. The next week, Idol & the Bruise Brothers took on “Fabulous One” Steve Keirn & the Wild Samoans with Angel in their corner. Angel went to Idol's corner, whispered something in Troy Graham's ear and the Bruise Brothers abandoned Idol! This led to a series of bouts with Idol & Mike Graham against the Bruise Brothers. Idol & Graham came out victorious and, soon, Porkchop & Dream Machine had left Memphis.
Jos LeDuc/Tommy Rich: More bloodbaths in early May between these two. During one match, LeDuc slammed Rich's head into a ringpost several consecutive times. Rich was diagnosed with a concussion afterwards and hasn't been seen since. LeDuc soon afterward signed with “Number One” Paul Jones. Jones claims LeDuc is the most powerful man in the CWA and unbeatable in arm wrestling! On several consecutive TV programs, LeDuc has beaten several wrestlers and volunteers from the audience at arm wrestling. Jones has put up $5,000 for anyone who can put LeDuc's arm down!
Texas Broncos: Kendall Windham & Sam Houston have been looking quite impressive. They scored wins over the Samoans as well as the team of Cowboy Bob Orton & Dutch Mantel! In an expiration of time match on TV, they teamed with Lawler to defeat Terry Funk, Mantel, & Orton!
Newcomers; Canadian Chris Benoit showed up in late May and dazzled fans with his high flying style. Music videos of Wendell Cooley have been shown and fans are looking forward to seeing this young man wrestle here. After weeks of hype, Tito Santanna finally hit Memphis and he has been on a real hot streak.
