CWA Late February/March Catchup:
Boogie Man Jam Fallout:
Terry Funk, bandaged up from the burns suffered at the hands of Jerry Lawler, came on TV the next week and said that with so many people on Lawler's side, he had to have help! He introduced THE DOUBLE CROSS GANG....himself, Dutch Mantel, & Cowboy Bob Orton!Their goal is to put Jerry Lawler out of wrestling. Orton also announced that this territory was too tough for his brother Barry and that Barry had moved on!
Bill Dundee announced that he had sent Percy Pringle packing! There was no Pringle Dynasty, but the DUNDEE DYNASTY! The Superstar said he would handle the careers of Killer Khan & the Wild Samoans from this point forward! He also told Exotic Adrian Street that the Dynasty would help him with Jimmy Valiant!
Adrian Street said that he & Linda attacked Jimmy Valiant & Big Mama for 2 reasons: 1) To settle an old score from years ago and 2) To serve notice that he wanted a match for Valiant's Southern Title
“Mr. Magnificent” Kevin Kelly challenged Austin Idol to a hair vs. hair match. Idol seemed a bit hesitant, but Fallen Angel told him that she believed in him and he agreed.
Eddie Marlin created quite a stir when he announced that Bad Company was the top contender to the Young Lions' CWA World Tag Titles and not former champs the Wrecking Crew. Hickerson & Condrey were irate, but Ron Wright seemed perfectly ok with it, stating that the Wrecking Crew would get their turn eventually.
CWA World Heavyweight Title scene:
Jerry Lawler gave the returning DutchMantel a title match at the first Mid South Coliseum card after the Jam. Lawler won by DQ after the rest of the Double Cross Gang jumped in, but he harlooked like a winner! Funk branded the King and Mantel whipped him with Shoo Baby!
The King held onto the title throughout March. His matches with Funk resulted in several sellout crowds. Many of the bouts were double DQs or CORs and there was an amazing 1 hour draw at the Louisville Gardens. Lawler also defeated Funk in bullrope matches around the loop. Funk showed up for the last TV in March with a roll of barbed wire, challenging Lawler to a Texas Barbed Wire match!
Cowboy Bob Orton and Giant Baba also received title matches and the King scored clean wins over both of them.
Tag Team Scene:
Bad Company defeated the Young Lions to win the Tag Titles. Ron Wright showed up at ringside during the match and his interference for Bad Company made the difference.
The Wrecking Crew demanded to know why Wright assisted another team on the next week's TV. Wright said that Bad Company was the future and that Hickerson and Condrey were yesterday's news! This led to a brawl between the Wrecking Crew & Bad Company!
Bad Company had several wild title defenses against the Wrecking Crew. Hickerson & Condrey came close to winning the belts, but Ron Wright's interference cost them every match!
On the March 5 TV show, Billy Travis does an interview (Jeff Jarrett is off doing “personal appearances”). Billy isn't happy that he and Jeff didn't get an immediate rematch with Bad Company for the titles. Ron Wright makes Billy an offer. If he can beat both Pat Tanaka and Paul Diamond in single matches on the TV program, he & Jeff get a return match at the March 7 Coliseum card. If Travis loses either match, he has to leave town for 30 days. Travis foolishly accepts! Travis pins Diamond, but due to copious interference from Wright and Diamond, he is pinned by Tanaka! Billy Travis must leave town and it looks like the Young Lions are out of contention!
Bad Company defends against The Wrecking Crew and the Texas Broncos in action packed matches over the next few weeks. Then, Jeff Jarrett introduces his new partner on TV: A masked man named BT Express! It's obviously Billy Travis, but Eddie Marlin says until somebody proves it's Billy, he can do nothing. If it is proven to be Billy, Travis will be banned for 1 year for breaching his contract!
On March 21, Jeff Jarrett & BT Express beat Bad Company, the Wrecking Crew, & The Texas Broncos in a four team elimination match to win the belts. Billy Travis is introduced before the match. Lance says Billy is “wrestling up in Montreal” and came to “watch the matches on his night off”. On this night only, it obviously wasn't Billy under the mask (it was Troy Graham, but he worked hard not to make it obvious). Billy started the match at the timekeeper's table, but ended up countering Ron Wright's interference several times. Jarrett/BT Express are champs as March ends, but Wright has placed a $1,000 bounty on BT Express' mask.
The Wrecking Crew have an interesting situation. They wrestle as faces against Bad Company or the Samoans, but are still working heel against almost anybody else.
Southern Title;Street/Valiant feud:
Valiant defended the Southern Title mostly against Street and most of the bouts were wild Double DQs with lots of interference and catfighting from Miss Linda and Big Mama! Bill Dundee got a rematch and Valiant came out with a clean pinfall win in that battle.
On the March 19th TV show, Jimmy Valiant opened the show with an interview with Lance Russell. Street came out with Killer Khan, appearing, according to Street, “courtesy of my dear friend Superstar Bill Dundee.” Khan and Street beat the Boogie Woogie Man to a bloody pulp. Valiant basically crawls off the set after telling Lance, “I gotta make a phone call!” At the end of the program, Valiant and Big Mama climb into the ring and challenge Street, Linda, Khan, “and anybody else they can drag out here!” Street, Linda, Khan, and the Samoans come out to answer the challenge. BUGSY MCGRAW HITS THE RING, CARRYING A SHOVEL! Street and his Dundee Dynasty cohorts run for their lives! McGraw says he has come in to help his “street brother” Jimmy Valiant!
Valiant & McGraw manage to beat Street & Khan in a wild brawl at the Coliseum the next Monday. The Monday after that, Valiant & Big Mama take on Street & Miss Linda in a mixed tag. Linda is obviously a superior athlete and wrestler, but when it breaks down to fighting, Big Mama can hold her own! Valiant & Mama win the bout and get a huge pop from the Mid South Coliseum crowd.
Austin Idol feud with Mr. Magnificent & Fabulous One:
The hair match has a shocking ending as Fallen Angel interferes on Kevi Kelly's behalf and costs Idol the match! After the match, the crowd sits in stunned silence as Mr. Magnificent and the Fabulous One shave Idol bald! The next week, Idol shows up on TV wearing a mask that he says is a gift from his “close friend Mil Mascaras, now the man of 999 masks”. Kelly, in an interview says that it was Fallen Angel who helped him become Mr. Magnificent after Idol injured himduring his rookie year. He vows to unmask Idol, show the world his bald head, and retire himfrom wrestling!
A new component is added to the feud. Mike Graham makes his debut in Memphis on the March 19the TV show. After a squash, Graham talks to Lance about how before the Fabs, Steve Keirn was his partner and they prided themselves on their scientific wrestling. Graham says it's a shame what Keirn ahs become. This brings out Keirn, Kelly, & Fallen Angel. They try to indimidate Graham, but Idol comes out to even the odds! Idol and Graham say that they will watch each other's back! Idol states that the Las Vegas Leglock and the Eddie Graham figure four are the most vicious holds in wrestling and that Keirn & Kelly could wind up on crutches!
The rest of the month sees Idol/Kelly and Graham/Keirn singles bouts as well as Idol/Graham-Kelly/Keirn tag bouts. Most of these bouts end up with tainted wins for the heels.
Dundee Dynasty:
Bill Dundee found himself in a feud with Koko Ware. On February 20th TV, he pinned Koko after nailing him with a chain. The next week on TV, Dundee did an interview where he admitted, with uncharacteristic honesty, that Ware gave him one of his toughest matches. He then called Koko out and in a very condescending manner, offered him a spot in the Dundee Dynasty. Ware refused and the Superstar responded by slapping Ware's face! Ware and Dundee haved battled all over the area with both men getting wins.
The Samaoans have had a series of bouts with the Texas Broncos with the two teams trading wins back and forth.
