Airdate: Saturday, July 2, 1987 on the USA Network
Live from Memorial Stadium in Baltimore, MD
Matches taped on June 1, 1987 at the County Coliseum Arena in Oakland, CA
Before the opening of the show, we see footage from last week’s show, where Larry Zbyszko pinned Jim Neidhart, with a little help from the middle rope, to retain the IC title.
Vince McMahon and Jesse “the Body” Ventura are at ringside in an empty Memorial Stadium for this week’s episode of WWF Superstars.
Vince says that in a few hours, this stadium will be packed to capacity, and they’ll be live with the second annual “Wrestling Classic”, where a NEW World Wrestling Federation heavyweight champion will be crowned in a single elimination tournament! Plus, the Ultimate Warrior will face Larry Zbyszko for the Intercontinental title, and the Hart Foundation will square off with the team that attacked them right here on Superstars a few weeks ago, Knobbs and Sags, the Nasty Boys!
Vince then sends us to the County Coliseum Arena in Oakland, CA for our first match.
BRUTUS “THE BARBER” BEEFCAKE VS. TOM STONE. Brutus gets the win when he locks Stone in the Sleeperhold. Vince says that Brutus is at the top of his game, and has to be considered one of the favourites to win the World Title tournament. After the decision is announced, Brutus cuts some of Stone’s hair, to the delight of the fans in attendance, while Jesse wonders if Brutus is also Vince’s barber.
It's time for the WWF Update with “Mean” Gene Okerlund.
Gene talks about the former tag team of Scott Hall and Johnny Ace. We see footage of them as a tag team. During the footage, Gene says that he thought we’d see big things from this team, they seemed poised for a run with the World Tag Team titles sooner or later.
However it was not to be, as Ace shocked everyone, and turned on Scott Hall, joining the Heenan Family in the process. This leads to footage of Ace attacking Hall, and then the announcement that Ace was the newest member of the Heenan Family and would be teaming with Terry Taylor to try to bring the Tag titles to the Family.
Gene then sends us to pre-recorded comments from both men. Scott Hall promises to knock some sense into Ace, while Johnny, along with Bobby Heenan, calls Hall a loser, and says he and Terry Taylor will win the World Tag titles because Terry Taylor is a winner, just like Ace.
Gene says that Hall and Ace are on a collision course, and says that they could lock horns later today at the Wrestling Classic, as both are entered in the World title tournament!
“MACHO MAN” RANDY SAVAGE (w/ Miss Elizabeth) VS. THE INTRUDER. Savage puts the masked man away with the flying elbowdrop at the 2-minute mark.
Lord Alfred Hayes is in the Events Center, and he talks about the 2nd annual Wrestling Classic, taking place tonight, live right here on USA Network. This year, there will be much more than just bragging rights on the line in the tournament, as the winner will become the new World Wrestling Federation champion! Hayes runs down the participants in the tournament:
Brutus “the Barber” Beefcake!
“the Million Dollar Man” Ted Dibiase!
The Brooklyn Brawler!
“Mr. USA” Tony Atlas!
“Macho Man” Randy Savage!
Scott Hall!
Johnny Ace!
Terry Taylor!
“Outlaw” Bobby Jaggers!
The Rockers, Shawn Michaels and Marty Jannetty!
Bam Bam Bigelow!
Jake “the Snake” Roberts!
Paul Roma!
Bad News Brown!
George “the Animal” Steele!
We hear quick pre-recorded comments from some of the participants, including Bad News Brown, who says he will go through those “other spineless cockroaches” to win the tournament and become the World heavyweight champion!
“THE MILLION DOLLAR MAN” TED DIBIASE (w/ Bobby Heenan & Virgil) VS. BUCK ZUMHOFF. The ring announcer introduces Dibiase as hailing from his “Summer home in Hyannis Port, Massachusetts”. Dibiase gets an easy win here, locking Zumhoff in the Million $ Dream sleeper. Afterwards, Dibiase shoves a crumpled up bill into his opponent’s mouth, which Virgil retrieves before leaving the ring.
THE HART FOUNDATION: BRET HART & JIM NEIDHART VS. BILL & RANDY MULKEY. The Hart Foundation get the win when Bret pins Bill Mulkey after the Hart Attack. Vince mentions that the Hart Foundation look ready for their match later today against the Nasty Boys at the Wrestling Classic. During the bout, an insert promo airs from Jimmy Hart, who says the Hart Foundation have a one-way ticket to Nastyville!
Mean Gene Okerlund is in the locker room area with the Ultimate Warrior. Mean Gene says that the Warrior will challenge Larry Zbyszko later today for the IC title at the Wrestling Classic, and says that when the Warrior first came to the WWF, he had a run-in with Larry Zbyszko, when Larry attacked him on the set of “Larry’s Lounge”. Gene says that they had a series of matches that ended indecisively, but now Warrior has the chance not only to beat Zbyszko, but win the IC title in the process!
Warrior rants about talking with the Gods in the Heavens, they have bestowed upon him the power to be the Ultimate Warrior, and he will use that power to destroy Larry Zbyszko!
THE NASTY BOYS: KNOBBS & SAGS (w/ Jimmy Hart) VS. THE YOUNG STALLIONS: PAUL ROMA & JOHNNY GUNN. The Nasty Boys pick up the win at about the 5-minute mark when Knobbs and Sags deliver a double headbutt to Gunn, then Knobbs scoops Sags up, and slams Sags right onto Gunn for the pinfall.
We go to Mean Gene Okerlund for the very first SummerSlam Report.
Gene says that SummerSlam will take place on Sunday afternoon, August 28, and will air live on Pay-Per-View. Gene says he will have some matches to announce in the coming weeks, but what he can tell us right now is that all three WWF titles will be defended at SummerSlam!
BAM BAM BIGELOW (w/ Slick) VS. “MR. USA” TONY ATLAS. Bigelow gets the win in this hard-fought match, after connecting with the slinghot headbutt from the apron into the ring.
Vince and Jesse wrap things up, and remind everyone to join them and Gorilla Monsoon tonight, right here on USA Network, for the Wrestling Classic, where a new World Wrestling Federation champion will be crowned!
