Airdate: Saturday, June 25, 1987 on the USA Network
Taped on June 1, 1987 at the County Coliseum Arena in Oakland, CA
Before the opening of the show, we see footage from last week’s show, where the Nasty Boys came out of the crowd and attacked the Hart Foundation with steel chairs.
Vince McMahon and Jesse “the Body” Ventura welcome us to Oakland, California for this week’s episode of WWF Superstars!
Vince and Jesse talk about the footage we saw at the top of the program, where the Nasty Boys attacked the Hart Foundation with chairs. Jesse says that Jimmy Hart is a man of his word, he told the Hart Foundation that things were going to get nasty for them, and he was right! Vince says that it’s one thing to attack someone from behind with a chair, but he thinks the outcome will be much different when the Hart Foundation meet the Nasty Boys in an actual match.
Vince then sends us to comments from Bret Hart and Jim Neidhart.
Bret Hart and Jim Neidhart talk about the incident last week, saying that they ran the Rougeaus out of the WWF, and they’ll do the same to the Nasty Boys!
JAKE “THE SNAKE” ROBERTS VS. TOM STONE. Jake gets the win by pinfall with the DDT. Afterwards, Jake puts Damien on his fallen opponent.
Vince says that later on today, we’ll see the debut of a wrestler who has taken Japanese wrestling by storm, known as “Tiger Mask”. We then go to a video of Tiger Mask.
BAM BAM BIGELOW (w/ Slick) VS. MARK RAGIN. Bigelow dominates the match, pounding poor Ragin right into the mat, before delivering the slingshot headbutt from the apron into the ring for the pinfall.
“Mean” Gene Okerlund is at the interview podium with the Heenan Family: Bobby Heenan, Ted Dibiase (along with Virgil), WWF IC champion Larry Zbyszko, Johnny Ace & Terry Taylor. All five men are dressed to the nines, in finely-tailored suits. Johnny Ace also has his hair cut short, and barely resembles the man that teamed with Scott Hall not so long ago.
Heenan talks about what’s coming up for the Heenan Family, saying that Dibiase will win the World title on July 2, and Ace and Taylor are setting their sights on the World tag team titles. The Brain guarantees Mean Gene that, by the end of 1987, the Heenan Family will control ALL the gold in the World Wrestling Federation!
THE ULTIMATE WARRIOR VS. LARRY LANE. Lane tries to get an advantage by attacking Warrior from behind while he’s shaking the ropes, but the advantage is short-lived, as the Warrior turns things around, and nearly takes Lane’s head off with a series of running clotheslines. From there, Warrior delivers the Gorilla Press Slam, followed by a splash, and gets the pinfall victory.
“THE MILLION DOLLAR MAN” TED DIBIASE (w/ Bobby Heenan & Virgil) VS. OUTBACK JACK. Jack is no slouch, and he gives the Million Dollar Man all he can handle in the early going. However, Dibiase soon gains the upper hand, and around the 4-minute mark he gets the win with the Million $ Dream Sleeperhold.
It's time for the WWF Update with “Mean” Gene Okerlund.
Gene talks about the WWF World heavyweight title becoming vacant. He talks about the injury to Hulk Hogan, as well as the tournament that will take place on July 2, from Baltimore’s Memorial Stadium, live on USA Network. Gene runs down the competitors that will take part in the tournament.
From there, we hear pre-recorded comments from some of the favourites to win the tournament, including “the Million Dollar Man” Ted Dibiase, “Macho Man” Randy Savage, Jake “the Snake” Roberts and Brutus “the Barber” Beefcake.
Gene says that this will be an historic night, as a new World champion will be crowned for the first time since Hulk Hogan won the title at WrestleMania 1 in 1985!
Vince and Jesse talk about one of the top Jr. heavyweight wrestlers in the World, the Tiger Mask from Japan. Vince says that the fans are in for a treat as Tiger Mask debuts next!
TIGER MASK (Misawa) VS. THE CONQUISTADOR. We’re treated to a fast-paced match-up here between the two masked men. During the match, Vince talks a little bit about the emergence of the Jr. heavyweight division in Japan, and says that Tiger Mask is considered to be the best of the Jr. heavyweights, having held titles all over the world. He says that the WWF is always looking for the very best wrestlers to showcase for the fans.
Tiger Mask gets the win here, connecting with a top-rope dropkick.
THE ROCKERS: SHAWN MICHAELS & MARTY JANNETTY VS. TERRY GIBBS & BARRY HOROWITZ. The Rockers get the win after both Michaels and Jannetty connect with top-rope Fistdrops, from opposite turnbuckles, on Gibbs, with Michaels then covering him for the pinfall.
We go to pre-recorded comments from Bam Bam Bigelow, along with his manager Slick, and from “Mr. USA” Tony Atlas regarding their match against each other on next week’s show.
WWF INTERCONTINENTAL CHAMPIONSHIP:
LARRY ZBYSZKO (champ) (w/ Bobby Heenan) VS. JIM NEIDHART. Larry finds out early that he can’t match the strength of Neidhart, who, Vince mentions, has set records in both the US and Canada for shot put and the anvil toss. Neidhart controls the early going, tossing Zbyszko around like a ragdoll. Larry rolls out of the ring to consult the Brain at ringside, and when Neidhart comes out after him, Zbyszko jumps back into the ring, then puts the boots to Neidhart when he follows him back in. Larry keeps Neidhart on the mat with several vicious kicks to the ribs, and then starts working on the Anvil’s knee, softening him up for the LarryLock.
Zbyszko attempts to apply the LarryLock figure-4, but Neidhart kicks him off and sends Zbyszko into the turnbuckle. With the champion temporarily dazed, it gives Neidhart a chance to turn the tables, but it’s obvious that damage has been done to his knee. Neidhart hits Zbyszko with a Discus Punch, but Vince notes that his knee gave out halfway through the move, and he didn’t get the full force behind it. Neidhart covers the champion, but Zbyszko kicks out at 2. Neidhart works Larry over, and then whips him into the corner, but when Neidhart charges in after him, Larry moves, and Neidhart collides chest-first with the turnbuckle. Larry then rolls Neidhart up, and puts both feet on the middle rope for leverage. The ref doesn’t see Larry’s feet on the rope, and counts to three, giving Zbyszko the win by pinfall!
Vince and Jesse wrap things up, and hype next week’s show, which will feature the Nasty Boys taking on the Young Stallions of Paul Roma and Johnny Gunn, and in the main event, Bam Bam Bigelow will square off with “Mr. USA” Tony Atlas.
