Landel Wins Tennessee Title; Party Boys Win
by Kay Fabin
Championship Wrestling presented it's first major pro wrestling card last night at the Civic Coliseum in Knoxville. It featured an 8 man single elimination tournament to crown a Tennessee Heavyweight Champion, and boasted plenty of hard hitting wrestling action. The main event of the evening was the tournament finals match in which "Nature Boy" Buddy Landel defeated Scott Armstrong to become the first Tennessee Heavyweight Champion. Landel picked up the win when longtime Knoxville villain Ron Wright came to ringside and gave Landel a black glove which he used to knock Armstrong unconscious while the referee was regaining his senses after being caught in the corner by the two grapplers. Time of the bout was 13:41.
Although Landel ended the night being crowned champion, he didn't appear to follow many rules to do so. His first round victory over "White Lightning" Tim Horner came when Horner missed a dive in the corner allowing Landel to cradle him, but Landel put his feet up on the ropes for added leverage to gain the pinfall. In his semi-final bout against the Bullet, Landel got assistance from fellow villain wrestler Rip Rogers, as Rogers interfered and rammed the Bullets head into the ring post outside of the ring weakening the Bullet and allowing Landel and easier victory.
Championship Wrestling President Ron Fuller spoke with me after the event and said that great Championship Wrestling action will be here live every week in Knoxville, and said that next Friday night's card will see new Tennessee Champion Buddy Landel defending the title against Tim Horner. With several competitors upset at their losses to Landel in the tournament, his reign as champion may be short lived as they line up for opportunities to face him in the coming weeks.
Party Boys Win; Conway Jr. Has to Leave Town
Before the main event, a tag team grudge match was held between Johnny & Davey Rich, known as the Party Boys, and the team of the Junkyard Dogs, Norvelle Austing & Tiger Conway Jr. The stipulation to this bout was that whomever was the man pinned or made to submit has to leave Knoxville for 90 days. The Party Boys were victorious when they caught Conway Jr. with a double drop kick for the winning pinfall.
In other action...
A second tag team feature bout earlier in the show saw The Nightmares return to the Knoxville area as they downed the masked Thunderfoot duo in 10:00. The Nightmares, Danny Davis & Ken Wayne told me after their bout that they are excited to be back in east Tennessee, and hope to be on the cards every Friday night in Knoxville.
