AWA WRESTLNG PRESENTS:
THE RETURN TO GREATNESS
SATURDAY JANUARY 9th 1997
N.E. MINNEAPOLIS ARMORY
The American Wrestling Association has makes it’s triumphant return on Saturday January 15th when the AWA puts on a show at the North East Minneapolis Armory. Commissioner of the AWA, Greg Gagne, son of legendary wrestler and former AWA owner and promoter Verne Gagne, has stated this is not going to be the promotion of his father, citing the lack of younger wrestlers for what turned his father’s promotion to a bad day. He has stated that this time around, the AWA will focus on in ring action, great brawls and superior technical matches. It will be professional wrestling the way the Minneapolis fans want it to be. It will be spectacular with no limits.
The first few names signed on to this venture include multiple former world champions including the man who never lost the AWA world title in the ring, instead had it stripped in a boardroom…Stan “The Lariat” Hanson. Another name, arguably the best technical wrestler to hold the world title since Verne Gagne himself, Curt Hennig will be in the AWA and you can bet he will have the AWA world heavyweight title in mind to regain. Japanese legend The Great Muta will be in here as well, signing on to an exclusive contract to wrestle here. Adding other names like “Nature Boy” Buddy Landel, and former NWA world heavyweight champion Barry Windham, the world title will be a hotly contested one.
We cannot stop there because the tag team division will be just as wild. The Nasty Boys, who got their start in the AWA during a mid-late 80’s run have amassed an impressive record for gathering world tag team titles but one tag team title that has eluded them has been the AWA world tag team titles and Knobbs & Saggs are ready a willing to take any team to “Nastyville”. Steve “Dr. Death” Williams & Gary Albright have come together to get the world tag team titles and from Japan, Tenzan & Chono, led by manager Sonny Ono will be here. As well, a battle of the Expresses, when Doug Furnas & Phil Lafon, the Can-Am Express, takes on the Jim Cornette led The Midnight Express. What team of men Cornette has listed as The Midnight Express, no one knows but we all know it will be one of the best tag team tandems the world has ever seen. Add the Canadian tag team, Edge & Christian and you have the makings of a truly world tag team champion whoever has gets the title belts.
We cannot forget the world junior weights. Georgia legend Brad Armstrong is going to be here representing the world juniors. Add the Canadians Lance Storm, and former AWA world heavyweight champion Rick Martel, and the world junior title division looks better than ever.
These are just some of the names listed to compete in the returning AWA so make sure you catch it as soon as it comes into your area. It can also be seen on KPXM-TV every Saturday night.
