World Wrestling Federation presents:
1/4/1997
Arrowhead Pond, Anaheim, CA
Live on the USA Network
The fireworks explode in the Arrowhead Pond, and then we go to ringside.
Vince McMahon: “Welcome everyone to WWF Raw is War! We’re here in Anaheim, California for the first Raw of 1997.”
Jim Ross: “Right here tonight, it will be a match-made-in-hell six-man tag team match, as WWF Champion Bret Hart, The Undertaker and Shawn Michaels square off with ‘Big Daddy Cool’ Diesel, Stone Cold Steve Austin and Cactus Jack!”
Jerry Lawler: “If I were Diesel and Cactus Jack, I’d be pretty worried about having to team with Austin. They don’t call him the Rattlesnake for nothing! I know first hand!”
Vince McMahon: “Let’s go up to the ring now for what should be a heck of a tag team!”
Match #1:
The Legion of Doom vs. Rocky Miavia and Savio Vega vs. Jesse James and Billy Gunn
With the other two teams in the ring, the Legion of Doom make their way down the ramp to a huge pop from the Anaheim crowd. Rocky Miavia and Savio Vega, who have had a rough go of it lately, try to shake the hands of the LOD but get ignored. Rocky Miavia starts off with Jesse James here, and again offers a handshake. Jesse James just snickers and cheap-shots Miavia before taking over. James goes off the ropes for a juke ‘n jive knee drop, but gets slapped across the back by Hawk coming off the ropes.
Road Warriors Hawk is right there when Jesse James gets up and drills James with a running clothesline. Hawk and Animal uses quick tags to dominate Miavia, until Rocky is finally able to tag out to Savio Vega. Vega comes in like a house of fire with wheel kicks on both Legion of Doom Members, until Billy Gunn makes a blind tag on Hawk. While the referee tries to get the LOD to the outside, Jesse James blow-blows Vega and Gunn connects with the Rocker Dropper. Referee Earl Hebner turns around just in time to make the three count. Jesse James and Billy Gunn steal a win here.
Winners at 10:34: Jesse James and Billy Gunn
Vince McMahon: “Let’s go backstage now to Michael Cole, who is standing by.”
Michael Cole: “Joining me right now is World Wrestling Federation Champion Bret Hart. Bret, we are just a few weeks away from your Royal Rumble rematch with Shawn Michaels – and tonight you actually have to team with him and The Undertaker.”
Bret Hart: “The way I look at it Michael, is that I’m going into this match with five opponents. The contract might say that Shawn Michaels and The Undertaker are my partners, but I sure as hell don’t trust either of them. I’ve learned one thing since I came back to the World Wrestling Federation, and that’s that nobody can be trusted!”
BRIAN PILLMAN ARRIVES ON THE SCENE!
Brian Pillman: “That’s where you’re wrong, Bret! You DO have people you can trust here in the World Wrestling Federation. It’s sure as hell not Shawn Michaels or The Undertaker – you’re right about that one! But remember, you have FAMILY here in the WWF. I hate to see the Hart Family divided. Let ME bring the Hart family back together.”
Bret Hart: “Brian, if you’re talking about my rotten little brother and my good-one-for-nothing brother-in-law, let me just say, thanks… BUT NO THANKS. With friends like them, who needs enemies. Now, I got a five-on-one match to prepare for!”
Brian Pillman: “Bret, sooner or later, you’re gonna see that I’m right.”

A large question mark appears on the screen.
Vince McMahon: “Next week – the return of one of the allllllllll-time greats! Which former WWF Champion is making his return? Tune into Raw is War and the War Zone!”
[End VTR]
Michael Cole: “Before the break, WWF Champion Bret Hart told me that he could not trust his partners Shawn Michaels and The Undertaker. Joining me now is the Heartbreak Kid himself, and Shawn I’m sure you have a response.”
Shawn Michaels: “I’ve tried to take the high road with Bret since he came to the World Wrestling Federation. I shook the man’s hand when he won the WWF Championship, and yet he can’t help but talk trash the Heartbreak Kid every chance he gets. Maybe it’s ME who’s going into a five-on-one handicap match – I’m not exactly Mr. Popular around here. Or maybe – just maybe – you’re exactly right, Bret. We’ll find out in a few minutes!”
Michael Cole: “Let’s go back to the ring!”
Match #2:
‘The World’s Most Dangerous Man’ Ken Shamrock vs. Mabel
Ken Shamrock storms down to the ring for what will surely be his biggest challenge in the WWF so far… quite literally. The former King of the Ring Mabel attacks Shamrock as he enters the ring and batters him in the corner, but Shamrock fights back with palm strikes. Some swift kicks back Mabel off and then Shamrock hooks the waist, pops the hops and drives Mable into the canvas with a belly-to-belly suplex! Shamrock now applies his ankle lock and it’s only seconds before Mabel is tapping out! What a dominating performance by the World’s Most Dangerous Man.
Winner at 4:02: Ken Shamrock
Vince McMahon: “We’ll be right back with more WWF Raw is War!”

Vince McMahon: “Welcome back to WWF Raw is War…”
Jim Ross: “And here comes our guest ring announcer for the next match! And what a guest she is! It’s Sunny!”
Sunny: “Raw is War, your night just got a lot hotter. It’s no secret that I’m looking for a new man to guide to the top – and remember, what Sunny wants, Sunny gets! So for the two guys in this next match, I suggest you impress! In the ring at this time, from Hunstville, Alabama… Bob Holly. And his opponent…”
Match #3:
Hunter Hearst Helmsley w/ Bodyguard and X-Pac vs. Bob Holly
This large woman who we saw at In Your House looks none too pleased with Sunny, who quickly gets out of dodge. The match is all Helmsley, as he works over Holly from bell to bell. At one point, Helmsley distracts the referee while this massive woman drills Holly with a vicious forearm strike. Hunter then finishes Holly off with the Pedigree and covers for the academic three count. Helmsley and X-Pac trade a Two Sweet hand gesture after the match, as this bodyguard just glares the crowd.
Winner at 3:12: Hunter Hearst Helmsley
Michael Cole: “We’re moments away from the main event, where Shawn Michaels, Bret Hart and The Undertaker will be taking on Diesel, Cactus Jack and this man… Stone Cold Steve Austin.”
Stone Cold Steve Austin: “Quit flappin’ yer gums, Cole. I don’t need none of yer questions, so just shut yer mouth! I heard Bret Hart – and big surprise, he’s complaining again! Bret can’t trust Shawn. Shawn can’t trust Bret. Who gives a crap? The fact is that it’s ol’ Stone Cold going into a five-on-one situation because I ain’t got no friends in the WWF, and I don’t want none either. As far as I’m concerned, I’d just as well whoop Diesel’s big ass and knock more of that goof Cactus Jack’s teeth out as I would whoop Bret Hart’s ass – and I might just do it. It don’t matter how many people you put in that ring with Stone Cold, they’re all goin’ down. And that’s the bottom line cuz Stone Cold said so!”
Michael Cole: “The main event is coming up next!”
Stone Cold Steve Austin: “Shaddup ya jackass!”

TV Main Event:
Cactus Jack, Diesel and Stone Cold Steve Austin vs. WWF Champion Bret Hart, Shawn Michaels and The Undertaker
Bret Hart flings off his jacket and belt, and dives right into the ring to battle with Stone Cold Steve Austin to get this thing under way. Hart and Austin are flinging the heavy artillery at each other and neither is backing up a single step. Austin finally connects with a knee to the gut, and then a knee lift. Austin comes off the ropes and connect with a knee drop across the throat. Cactus Jack is now shouting at Austin to tag him in, and summarily gets a…
Stone Cold is stomping a mudhole in the WWF Champion and now bounces off the ropes, where Diesel slaps his shoulder and thus tags himself in. Austin spins around and he’s now right in Diesel’s face. These partners might just go at it here – but Bret Hart launches himself at both with a double clothesline. Austin falls out to the floor as Bret Hart slugs away on Diesel. Hart tags in Undertaker, who steps over the top rope and connects with a chop to Diesel’s chest. Bret Hart steps out onto the apron, where he is now suspicious eying Shawn Michaels.
In the ring. Undertaker goes to walk the ropes… but Diesel pulls him off and right into a vicious clothesline. Diesel knees Taker in the stomach and lays the Phenom out with a huge side slam. Diesel tags out to Cactus Jack – much to the disgust of Stone Cold. Catcus Jack is in and he connects with the Double Arm DDT on Undertaker – only to get a two count. Paul Bearer is now at ringside watching the action with a gleeful smile on his face. Cactus Jack goes off the second rope with an elbow drop, but Taker sits up and Cactus collides into the canvas. Undertaker now perches and drills Cactus with a choke-slam before tagging out to Shawn Michaels. Michaels climbs up top and catches Cactus with a cross-body splash for the 1-2-no! Steve Austin broke up the pin.
This brings in Bret Hart, who slugs it out with Austin so naturally Diesel and Undertaker are in now as well. We have a huge braw here, and referee Billy Silverman eventually has no choice but to throw this match out!
Winners at 10:31: No contest
The war is raging as Undertaker and Diesel battle down on the floor as Michaels suplexes Cactus Jack, while Bret Hart and Steve Austin slug it out. However, as Bret grabs Austin and headbutts him, right behind him… Shawn Michaels is stomping his foot on the canvas. He’s going to drill Bret with the Sweet Chin Music. However, Bret turns around and sees it! Bret shoves Michaels! Michaels shoves Bret! However, Bret Hart is spun around now…
STONE COLD STUNNER ON BRET HART!!!!
Steve Austin is now right in the prone Bret Hart’s face, shouting all kinds of above. Steve Austin stumbles up now – and Michaels is tuning up the band behind him. Shawn goes for the superkick… but Austin blocks it. Boot to the gut!
STONE COLD STUNNER ON SHAWN MICHAELS!!!
Stone Cold Steve Austin is now standing over WWF Champion Bret Hart and the number-one contender Shawn Michaels – and he’s just taken them both out. The Intercontinental Champion flashes both of them the double bird, until over the sound system…
HERE COMES AHMED JOHNSON!!!
Stone Cold Steve Austin’s Royal Rumble opponent Ahmed Johnson makes a bee-line to the ring and tackles Austin. Austin fights back and brawls out to the floor with Johnson. The camera now zooms in on the ring with both Shawn Michaels and Bret Hart flat on their backs as a result of those Stone Cold Stunner. Then the camera cuts to the top of the stage:
