WrestleMania I's Closing Moments, Hogan challenging Ted DiBiase for the WWF Championship 3.31.85
AS WRITTEN BY CHITOMCMAHON
stuns the champion with another big right hand that sends Dibiase reeling against the ropes. Hogan grabs him and whips him to the opposite side of the ring . . . and delivers the big boot to the chin as Dibiase rebounds off the ropes! Hogan’s knee is obviously bothering him, as he’s limping slightly, but he ignores the pain, runs the ropes . . . AND DELIVERS THE LEGDROP!!!!!!
The building errupts as Hogan hits the move, then hooks Dibiase’s leg. Muhammad Ali makes the count, as Hogan and all the fans in attendance count along . . . ONE . . . TWO . . . THREE!!!!!!
HULK HOGAN HAS DONE IT, HE’S PINNED TED DIBIASE AND IS ONCE AGAIN THE WORLD WRESTLING FEDERATION CHAMPION!!!!
Muhammad Ali hands Hogan the belt, and he straps it around his waist, and poses for the fans.
Suddenly, RODDY PIPER and HERCULES hit the ring!! Piper jumps Hogan from behind, then pulls the WWF title belt off him, and repeatedly bashes Hogan in the face with it! Hercules then pulls Hogan up, whips him into the ropes, and delivers a powerslam!
With Hogan down on the mat, Piper and Hercules stand over him, gloating. Mr. T arrives on the scene, and grabs a chair before jumping into the ring. T goes after Piper with the chair, but he leaves himself open to a sneak attack from Hercules, who pummels T, and hits him with a powerslam as well!
Piper and Hercules high-five each other, but Hogan has got back to his feet, and he nails Hercules with a series of right hands that send Hercules through the ropes and to the floor.
Hogan, with blood running down his face from being hit repeatedly with the title belt, turns his attention to Hot Rod! Piper wisely bails out of the ring before Hogan can get his hands on him.
Hogan grabs the WWF title belt, and helps Mr. T up, then the two men celebrate and pose in the ring!
[END VTR]
That brings us to our first contest, the Mighty Hercules makes his return as a member of the Legion of Doom battling young Shane Douglas! Douglas puts forth a valiant effort but in the end falls in just over 4 minutes via submission to Hercules torture rack submission!
Hercules w/ "Precious" Paul Ellering defeats Shane Douglas via submission to the Argentine Backbreaker at 4:45.
We then go to segment recorded earlier today with Mean Gene Okerlund interview Hot Stuff International: "Hot Stuff" Eddie Gilbert and his Amazing Malenko Brothers about their match against the Young Stallions coming up. Stallions will have Susan St. James in their corner, and the whole gimmick here is that Eddie Gilbert (who has flowers) intends on asking St. James out. From there we get a generic interview with the Stallions at St. James, and when pressed about Gilbert's advances she understands that Gilbert is a rat, and she's not interested in an inter-species relationship.
Match itself follows and it's face paced and fun for what it is, but a little on the short side. The Stallions look poised for victory, but Gilbert gets involved hitting on St. James on the apron providing the distraction that allows the brothers Malenko to pull a switch-a-roo behind the officials back, and Dnitry gets a roll up and the victory over Paul Roma.
The Amazing Malenko Brothers (Dnitry and Joesph) w/ "Hot Stuff" Eddie Gilbert defeated The Young Stallions (Jim Powers & Paul Roma) w/ Susan St. James when Roma is pinned by Dnitry off a rolling reverse cradle into a bridge at 5:55.
POST MATCH- Gilbert TRIES again with the flowers here for Susan, BUT GETS A SLAP IN THE FACE to a huge reaction! Eddie looks like he's about to grab at James, but Powers and Roma are there to defend! The Malenko's and Gilbert get sent to the outside after some firey offense from the Stallions.
Monsoon has a laugh, Gilbert is made a fool of. Ventura doesn't like it, but what can you do. Never the less Mean Gene is standing by with Roddy Piper! Piper has Hercules with 'em!
The jist of the interview here is, Piper is confident he's got a master plan. He's got the smartest man in the buisness in his corner in Precious Paul, he's got a referee with a grudge against Hogan calling the shots, and LOOK his HERCULES IS BACK! He's so confident that if he doesn't win tonight, "Man, if I don't win tonight, I'll retire man, you hear me, I'll retire from pro wrestling, I'll retire from tiddlywinks, HELL I'll retire from KISSING GIRLS...." It should be noted that clips from Piper's turn on Hogan at the Royal Rumble air during this segment.
And with that Gene sends it back to Jesse & Gorilla who SENDS it to Howard Finkle who introduces our special guest ring announcer for our next contest...

It should be noted that clips from Piper's turn on Hogan at the Royal Rumble air during this segment.
And with that Gene sends it back to Jesse & Gorilla who SENDS it to Howard Finkle who introduces our special guest ring announcer for our next contest...
JOAN RIVERS!!!!!!
It's a previously un-announced contest with the Ugandan Head Hunter: Kamala going one on one with George "The Animal" Steele. Kamala is out there with Kimchee and Mr. Fuji, Steele well, he scares the bejesus out of Joan at the start of this thing, chasing her off. Our announcers are cracking jokes about both men throughout the bout, which is easily, well terrible. Steele ends up winning via count out after Kamala misses a charge out on the floor. The Animal celebrates with Joan Rivers and shows her what he can do to a turnbuckle.
George "The Animal" Steele defeated Kamala w/ Kimchee & Mr. Fuji via count out at 7:54.
From there we're taking to pre-recorded words from the "American Dream" Dusty Rhodes. We get an epic line here " Baseball has it's World Series, Footballs has it's a Superbowl, but for pro rasslin' bah-by, we've got tonight daddy, and the American Dream's gonna get it done at RASSLEMANIA!"
His opposition is lead out by "Hot Stuff" Eddie Gilbert: Nikolai Volkoff. After introductions Volkoff opts to sing the Russian national anthem. Dream ATTACKS during this with a big bionic elbow between the eyes to a huge ovation! The bell sounds, Rhodes drops an elbow drop and covers, PINNING VOLKOFF AT THE 5 SECOND MARK TO MAKE HISTORY!! The quickest match in Wrestlemania history fans! Ventura is LIVID, Gorilla laughs it up, and Gilbert throws a hissy fit. Not a great night from the young manager thus far here at Wrestlemania!
Dusty Rhodes defeated Nikolai Volkoff w/ "Hot Stuff" Eddie Gilbert in 5 seconds via pinfall off a big elbowdrop.
We get pre-recorded words before our next bout as Mean Gene Okerlund is standing by with the Road Warriors and Paul Ellering. Nothing crazy here just threatening to give Andre the biggest beating of his life, that would make JACK of the beanstalk fame proud, and promising to end T's television career, don't worry Hawk, time will do just that.
Mean Gene then interviews their opponents, Mr. T and Andre the Giant LIVE, and perhaps it should have been pre-recorded as T does something that surely won't sit well with Vince, Hawk, or Animal as he legitimately challenges their street cred. See T is also from Chicago, and he claims he's never heard of "no Road Warriors" calls them wannabes and chumps, pitty's them you see.
For this next match, and this next match only we are randomly joined by...
G. Gordon Lilly
This brings us to the match itself and it ain't pretty at all, not even in the slightest man. It picks up a bit and breaks down into a brawl. The Warriors work stiff with T and he legit looks scared out there, perhaps he shouldn't have run his mouth, eh? The tag rules are thrown out and the official has enough, finally signaling for the bell at the 10 minute mark. It's a double DQ. The brawl CONTINUES after the match for a bit. Ellering calls his Warriors off, but we get an odd sign of respect here as they nod their head towards Andre, perhaps impressed by his willingness to continue.
The Road Warriors w/ Paul Ellering fought to a double DQ with Andre the Giant & Mr. T at 10:51.
Intermission.
We're back and Jesse is gone, as he's got an interview with the "CHUMPSTER" coming up shortly, so Gorilla is flying solo. It's our introduction to Doug Furnas next, with Vince handling the honors in the ring. The crowd doesn't really care about wrestling's newest "World's Strongest Man" he benches "nearly 600 lbs" and this is dying a slow death in the ring here. BUT WAIT... It's....
"HOT STUFF" EDDIE GILBERT and his AMAZING MALENKO BROTHERS!!
Gilbert knows that Mr. Furnas graduated from Memphis, and since he himself is a Memphis boy is out here to offer him the opportunity of a life time, a FULL time gig in Hot Stuff International! Furnas turns him down, politely. SOOO Gilbert presses harder and harder and keeps getting turned down. FINALLY he snaps... "LISTEN YOU BIG DUMMY, THIS IS YOUR LAST CHANCE HERE!" and pokes Furnas as he does so. SO Furnas decks him! The Malenko's attack and eat body slams for their trouble! Furnas scores with a beautiful dropkick that sends them BOTH out of the ring (Dnitry into Joe). Gilbert is pressed over his head and TOSSED to the outside out onto the Malenkos to a huge ovation! Vince proudly announces that Doug Furnas has arrived at "WRESTLEMANIA!" and Furnas celebrates in the ring.
6 Man action officially welcomes us back from intermission as Jimmy Hart's trio of the WWF Tag Team Champions: The Hart Foundation & the Honky Tonk Man battle the trio of the Rockers & Brutus "The Barber" Beefcake. Fun match here, perhaps the match of the night thus far. Again it suffers from being a tad on the short side. Mid way thru the match, Eddie Gilbert joins Monsoon on commentary so we've got banter back and forth about Gilbert making a fool out of himself 3 times on this show. The big story is the finish as Michaels and Jannety are able to connect with the Rocker Plex on Bret and Shawn scores the pin as Honky is held off. The Rockers have pinned the WWF tag team champions, but as Eddie Gilbert points out "it wasn't for the titles, so WHO CARES" Gorilla does of course as it just proves that they are the number one contenders and perhaps a tag title shot is in their future.
The Rockers & Brutus Beefcake defeated The Hart Foundation & the Honky Tonk Man w/ Jimmy Hart when Shawn pinned Bret off the Rocker Plex at 12:29.
Jesse Ventura is back stage for his interview with Hogan. The jist here is Jesse wants to talk about Stallone but Hogan ain't having it. Jesse then talks about Piper promising to retire if he loses, and PRESSES Hogan if he'll do the same "WHEN HE LOSES" Hogan ain't losing he says, the Hulkamaniacs won't allow it you see. Jesse presses again, "if you're so CONFIDENT HOGAN, then SAY IT, say you'll retire if you lose. " Finally HOGAN SAYS IT. Hogan PROMISES to retire if he loses! THE STAKES HAVE GOTTEN THAT MUCH BIGGER. Que the "WATCHA GONNA DO PIPER!" line and it's time to head to the ring for our next contest.
Remember when we talked about the 6 man stealing the show thus far? Well toss that out the window as the IC title match between champion: "Macho Man" Randy Savage and Tito Santana one ups that one easily. These two tell quite the story throughout. Some big high spots, and the story of Savage injurying the neck of Tito out on the floor off his trademark guardrail axehandle spot. Savage does a good job avoiding the Flying Forearm as well. He can't avoid the figure four however and ends up spending some time in the hold before making it to the ropes. Tito tries again later but gets rolled up, BUT ROLLS THRU AND PINS SAVAGE FOR THE TITLE!!!!!!!!!!!!! TITO SANTANA HAS WON THE INTERCONTINENTAL CHAMPIONSHIP HERE AT WRESTLEMANIA!!!!!!!
Intercontinental Championship
Tito Santana defeats Champion: Randy "Macho Man" Savage w/ Miss Elizabeth for the title via pinfall at 15:54.
We're back to Jesse as Tito celebrates, with Eddie of course reminding everyone that Savage gets a rematch. We're then taking backstage where Jesse Ventura is standing by with the special guest referee for tonight's main event...
Sylvester Stalone!
Jesse gets Sly to admit to having problems on set with Hogan, BUT Stalone isn't gonna sell out to Piper and his goons! Stalone promises to call it RIGHT DOWN the middle! Jesse doesn't believe him at all.
And so we say goodbye to Bruno, in his last match on the greatest stage of them all, although not really build as such I assure you it is. His opposition is his former student and greatest rival Larry Zbyszko. Larry gets busted open in the early going after a few stiff shots from Bruno. We get some stalling. A low blow behind the officials back gets Larry some heat. Bruno battles back from behind however and next thing you know it the crowd is going wild as Larry is up in the air in the Sammartino backbreaker giving Bruno the submission victory in just over 7 minutes!
"Living Legend" Bruno Sammartino defeated Larry Zbyszko via submission to the Sammartino Backbreaker at 7:15.
Our next match is the debut of the All Americans: Terry Taylor & Mike Rotunda. Rotunda is sporting a Syracuse letter jacket, Taylor a Guilford College letter jacket. Gorilla proclaims them natural foils for Gilbert's Malenko's. Gilbert questions this, "Why because they're american? The Malenko's are AMERICAN banana man!". The opposition is Barry Horrowitz and Steve Lombardi, thus it's a squash match. Finish see's Rotunda pin Barry after an airplane spin in just over 2 minutes.
The All Americans defeated Barry Horrowitz & Steve Lombardi when Rotunda pinned Horrowitz off an airplane spin at 2:12.
Jesse's back for our main event! The big one, 12 months in the making! The final battle between Hulk Hogan and Roddy Piper! Remember fans, BOTH MEN have now promised to retire if they DO NOT WIN!
Sly's word comes into question in the early going as Hogan refuses to break in the corner leading to a heated confrontation between the Rocky III stars. BUT turn about is fair play as the roles get reversed a few moments later. IN FACT, it gets taking one step further as Hercules attacks Hogan on the outside as Paul tries a distraction but Stalone see's thru it and EJECTS PIPER'S CORNER MEN FROM RINGSIDE!! A livid Piper confronts Stalone and nearly gets pinned off an inside cradle by Hulkster. The action spills to the outside with Hulkster in control, however he misses a charge and ends up eating a face full of post to bust 'em open. Piper seems poised to win the title as he eventually looks for the kill with a bulldog but Hulkster is up at 2. Sleeper hold follows and things are looking bleak for the Hulkster...
The arm drops once...
The arm drops twice....
NO!! NO!! NO!!!
I think you know what happens now.... "YOU!!!" Punches, irish whip... BIG BOOT... BIG LEG... HULKAMANIA REIGNS SUPREME!!
Jesse Ventura: " I THINK I'M GONNA BE SICK!!"
WWF World Championship
Champion: "Immortal" Hulk Hogan defeated "Rowdy" Roddy Piper w/ Hercules & "Precious" Paul Ellering via pinfall at 16:29.
BUT WHAT DOES THIS MEAN ABOUT THE FUTURE OF RODDY PIPER?? WILL HE LIVE UP TO HIS WORD???
WAIT A MINUTE... Hogan & Stalone MAKE AMENDS... and it's POSE DOWN TIME FANS!!!!!!!!
Show goes off the air with Piper's future in limbo BUT Hogan and Stalone doing the pose routine to a huge ovation!
Mustarunallday's VISION of the WWF debuts Monday April 13th RIGHT HERE ON THIS VERY BOARD!
SAY GOODNIGHT JESSE...
Jesse Ventura: "GOODNIGHT JESSE!"
