Yesterday, I set the story to the behind the scenes goings on with this new AWA in 1986. Today, I'm here to bring everyone up to speed on what has been going on in the ring lately....
- RIck Martel had captured the AWA World Heavyweight TItle in early 1985 from Jumbo Tsuruta. After a quick changing of the belt in Japan with Tsuruta again, Martel came home to the states and enjoyed a moderate run as champion until he was dethroned in the summer by Stan Hansen. Hansen kept the belt until October when Martel once again reclaimed the gold and began his third reign as champion, and he still holds the belt today. But crafty veteran Nick Bockwinkle has pressed hard to get back to the top of the singles chart after an extended stint of teaming with Ray Stevens. Bockwinkle has worked his back to the number one contender status, and is set to challeng Martel for the belt at the upcoming Super Sunday show.
- Larry Zybysko has spent the better part of the last year antagonizing the baby faces and making himself a general thorn in everyone's side. When Wahoo McDaniel came into the area, Larry started shooting his mouth off until Wahoo called him out. They met a couple of months ago in a match that Wahoo won. After that, as revenge, Larry destroyed his Indina headress, and has been talking some incredible smack about Wahoo and his people. The two of them are scheduled to meet again at Super Sunday.
- After his tag team with Nick Bockwinkle disolved, Ray Stevens has taken to putting down and harrasing the younger wrestlers on the roster. Once he turned his attention to Greg Gagne, he found a fight on his hands. Greg has yet to back down from the veteran, and the battles between the two have escalated to the point that Stevens was able to goad Greg into putting his career on the line in a match at Super Sunday.
- Curt Henning and Scott Hall have experienced a long reign as World Tag Team Champions, and have beaten every team around the AWA. Their stiffest competition has come from Bockwinkle and Stevens, as well as Buddy Rose and Doug Somers. Now that the tag team division has become as competitive as it has, their toughest days as champions are still ahead of them.
- Sgt. Slaughter and Boris Zuchov have engaged in a modern day cold war...but in the ring. The two have traded wins back and forth, and have another battle schedule for the upcoming Super Sunday.
