4.In the opening match of the tournament, Steve “Dr. Death” Williams(w/Ted DiBiase) squares off with Tony Atlas. This is power vs. power and both men deliver a bunch of punishment! It looks like it is over when Atlas gives Dr. Death and overhead press slam! Atlas covers! One...two...kickout!The fans are shocked. Nobody kicks out of that! Moments later, Williams reverses an Irish whip to the ropes and catches Atlas in the Oklahoma Stampede! One! Two! Three! DR. DEATH ADVANCES! The fans are shocked! They have never seen Atlas manhandled that way! Time of the fall: 10:22.
5.Terry Taylor takes on Jesse Barr(w/ Ted DiBiase). Ross & Watts point out that if Barr wins, it will be a battle of Rat Pack members in the second round! Despite a bunch of interference by DiBiase, that situation never comes to pass. Taylor hits a flying forearm and pins Barr after 14:55 of outstanding action!
6.In a battle between two of the greatest Japanese wrestlers in the world, Antonio Inoki comes to New Orleans to wrestle Jumbo Tsuruta (w/ Hiro Matsuda). Inoki holds the advantage until Matsuda distracts him, allowing Tsuruta to take control. Eventually, the match spills out of the ring to the floor of the Superdome where both men are eliminated via double countout at 11:12!
7.Magnum TA takes on the man he beat for the North American Title, One Man Gang (w/Hiro Matsuda) in yet another first round match. OMG basically tries to destroy TA in this match. When the battle spills to the floor, Gang tries to whip Magnum into the ringpost, but Magnum reverses and the Gang's skull collides with the steel post! This would normally be a DQ, but Hiro Matsuda was distracting referee Jerry Usher! The Gang is down on the floor and a battered Magnum crawls back into the ring! The ref counts the semi conscious Gang out at the 12:45 mark and Magnum advances! The Gang gets his chain afterwards and attempts to attack Magnum, but TA is able to avoid the punishment!
8.The next first round match sees Michael Hayes take on Dick Slater. Hayes enters first, wearing only his tights and boots with no music playing. Hayes appears much more serious than usual. Slater wears a jacket with the NWA logo on the back of it. Before the bell, Slater gets on the mic...
SLATER: I've been a wrestler for a long time and I've always been an NWA wrestler! The NWA is the oldest and largest sanctioning body for professional wrestling! Now, some people down here have decided to start their own organization and have their own champion! Well, compared to the NWA, anything they try is second rate! I'm here to spoil the party! An NWA wrestler is gonna win your Universal Title and it's gonna be me, Dick Slater!
Slater wrestles a very aggressive style against Hayes and the Freebird seems a bit overwhelmed at first. Hayes manages to make a comeback around the five minute mark and really takes it to Slater! It looks like Hayes will advance, but the crafty Slater executes an inside cradle out of nowhere and pulls the tights to get the 1...2...3 at the 9:44 mark!
9.The final first round match sees Terry Gordy (w/Buddy Roberts) against TV Champion Hollywood John Tatum (w/Missy Hyatt). Tatum matches “Bamm Bamm” move for move for most of the bout. With Neeley down, Missy takes the opportunity to slide her Gucci bag into the ring for Tatum! Roberts removes ones of his cowboy boots and tosses it in to Gordy! Now, we have a duel, with Gordy swinging a boot and Tatum swinging a loaded purse! The referee comes to, sees both men swinging foreign objects and calls for the bell! It's a double DQ and both men are eliminated! Time of the match: 12:07.
10.The Roughnecks(Rip “The Crippler” Oliver & “Mean” Mike Miller) defend their UWF Tag belts against the Zambuie Express(Elijah Akeem & Kareem Muhammad) (w/Hiro Matsuda). This is nothing but a brawl! At the 12 minute mark, all four men are in the ring! Hiro Matsuda tries to throw one of the title belts to one of his men, but Oliver gets ahold of it instead and bashes both members of the Express and gets his team DQ'd at the 13:11 mark! The two teamscontinue to brawl after the match! The Freebirds come charging in, ostensibly in to help referee Tommy Gilbert break up the fight, but it winds up being a three way street fight! Gordy and Hayes each remove a cowboy boot while Gordy starts slugging both the Zambuies and the Roughnecks! Eventually, the 'birds clear the ring and are left standing tall!
SECOND ROUND UNIVERSAL TITLE TOURNAMENT(1 fall, 30 minute time limit)
11.The second round begins with Steve “Dr. Death” Williams (w/Ted DiBiase) taking on Terry Taylor. Taylor wrestles agressively, taking it right to his larger opponent! Unfotunately, when Taylor tries to dropkick Williams, the good doctor merely swats him out of the air like a fly! Dr. Death takes control with an impressive array of power moves. Taylor takes a bunch of punishment, but comes roaring back and nails his patented flying forearm! Taylor covers! One...two....th....Williams kicked out! Even DiBiase seems surprised by that! Taylor doesn't seemed phased by that and keeps on the offensive, scoring some more near falls in the process! Taylor goes for a flying bodypress, but Dr. Death catches him in midair and delivers a ring rattling Oklahoma Stampede! Nobody kicks out of that and Williams advances via pinfall at the 22:29 mark!
12.Magnum TA takes on Dick Slater in another tournament bout. Slater attacks at the bell and dishes out a ton of punishment to Magnum! The Superdome crowd gets behind TA and he seems to draw strength from their cheers! Magnum is bleeding, but he comes firing back and gets the pin with the belly to belly at the 19:07 mark! The crowd goes wild as Magnum's hand is raised by referee Alfred Neeley! Slater attacks TA from behind and pounds away on Magnum! TA fights back and is holding his own! Wait just a second! Here come Ted DiBiase & Jesse Barr of the Rat Pack! They help Slater gang up on Magnum! DiBiase loads the glove and he's teeing off on Magnum! It's obvious that the Rat Pack is trying to weaken Magnum before he faces Dr. Death in the finals! Finally, Tony Atlas, Wendell Cooley, and Hacksaw Duggan hit the ring to make the>save! Magnum is bleeding, but he is standing tall and walks to the dressing room under his own power.
We have a brief intermission and, when it is over, UWF President Bill Watts is in the ring, holding the Universal Title belt....
