Championship Wrestling 1985
December 27th, 1985
Host: Lance Russell & Dave Brown
"YELLOOW EVERYBODY"
Not so happy open this week as Lance and Dave make mention that for the second year in a row Christmas was filled with treachery for the King: Jerry Lawler. We'll be taking you back to what happened a little later on and how Billy Dundee pulled the wool over just about everyone's eyes and turned on the King in the cage. BUT FIRST we're talking to Eddie Marlin about the Southern Tag Team Championships. Eddie Marlin says he's looking into Don Fargo's involvement in this whole thing, but he can't have the King and the Superstar holding the tag belts, it's not good for anyone's sake so he's vacating the belts, a tournament will take place this Monday Night at the Coliseum featuring 8 of the top teams in all of Memphis. The Nightmares, The Fantastics, The Japanese, the new International Champions: The PYT Express, Don Muraco & International Heavyweight Champion: Buddy Landel, Baron Von Raschke & The Spoiler, Pez Whatley & The Giant Hillbilly and lastly the returning Fabulous Ones will compete for the gold with brackets to be revealed later on in the program.
Eddie Marlin wishes the King a quick recovery, but states that he wants him to be at 100% once he returns.
Marlin is sent away, and we're sent to the ring where someone who had a very good Christmas Night, 'Wild Fire' Tommy Rich is in action!
"Wild Fire" Tommy Rich defeated Lou Winston via pinfall off the Thesz Press at 2:10.
Tommy Rich joins Lance after the match.
Lance Russell: " Ladies and gentlemen, we're talking to a man who's 10,000 dollars richer as we head into the new year, Tommy Rich. "
Tommy Rich: " I ain't one for material things, but 10,000 dollars richer is just the way to close out this year. You know, before I get into my plans this comin' new year, Lance, I've gotta talk about this Bill Dundee situation real, real quick. I ain't never trusted him, ya'll remember when he was out here weeks ago standing by mauh said, ya'll can tell I had a problem with the guy. Christmas was good to me, but not to the King... and it just ain't right."
Lance Russell: " We're going to show the footage in a little bit here, and I'm sure we'll hear from Dundee himself, but Tommy, you may have saved the King's career by breaking into that there cage and sending the Dream Team packing. "
Tommy Rich: " I was just doing what came natural to me, doing the right thing. You can call them the Army, you can call them the Dream Team, don't matter what you call them Russell, they're a bunch of fathead bullies and they need to be dealt with. One of these days, ya'll gonna cross paths with Wild Fire, and boys ya'll gonna burn... NOW let's talk about 1986, the year to come. '85 was filled with ups and downs, but ya'h know what sticks out to me the most? Jerry Lawler lived up to his word, he told all the people here that he was gonna be NWA World Champion by the end of the year, and low and behold the King did it.... now after that battle royal win, I'm as FARRRED UP as ever Lance Russell, and I'm gonna make the same guarantee, TOMMY RICH is gonna be the NWA World Champion again in 1986! I did it before, I'll do it again before the year is done and you can take that to the bank brother! "
Lance Russell: " Wow, well Tommy we'd all love to see that and wish you the best in the year to come. We're taking a quick break, when we return it's with a Mid American title bout as the Idol: Austin Idol defends against the Spoiler, don't you dare touch that dial!"
Commercial Break
We're back and it's to the ring for the Mid American Title Match; Idol's got a tough task ahead of him as it's against the Spoiler a grizzled vet in his own right. Idol does some selling for the masked man, but scores with an out of nowhere swinging neckbreaker for the win.
Mid American Heavyweight Championship
Champion: "Universal Heartthrob" Austin Idol defeats The Spoiler in 6:45 via pinfall off a swinging neckbreaker.
Idol joins Lance, and we're talking about Dundee's actions against the King in the cage.
Austin Idol: " I ain't gonna come on out here and croon, brag, or boast about how I saw it coming a mile away, but that's just because the man is in the hospital and nobody deserves to spend Christmas in the hospital. King's gonna get his revenge, he always does brother, SO let's not talk about that... let's talk about the women's pet, the man's regret, the tower of power, too sweet to be sour, the HEARTTHROB baby, taking on all comers for this here Mid American Championship!"
Lance Russell: " Monday Night it was the Baron, today the Spoiler, and coming up around the area a series of matches against a motivated Phil Hickerson..."
Austin Idol: " BRING 'EM ON, bring 'em all on baby, 'cause I'm going into 1986 a PROUD, PROUD champion, and brother you can rest assured as GAWD as a my witness, I'm gonna continue to do so ALL YEAR LONG... 1985 may have been the year of the King, but 1986 BELONGS to the Idol, JACK! "
Idol flexes, stating look at that before walking off.
Lance Russell: " Fans you heard the man, Austin Idol is a PROUD champion and a fighting one at that! We're taking a quick break, but before we do, here's a special look at the Fabulous Ones! Returning to an arena near you this up coming week!"
Commercial Break
We're back and we're going back to the Mid South Coliseum, with a warning towards the children watching, as we're showing the "incident" between Lawler, Dundee and the Dream Team in full.
Clips air of Dundee turning, the beatdown in the cage with everyone involved, and Lawler getting handcuffed to the cage and beaten to a bloody pulp. We show the King getting a stretcher ride before heading back to Lance and Dave.
We're told Lawler is still in the hospital, but they hope to get him on the phone shortly.
AND HERE COMES THE DREAM TEAM! "Superstar" Dundee, Buddy Landel, Magnificent Muraco, Dr. D, a wheel chair bounded Dream Machine, and dressed in FULL clown get up, it's Downtown Bruno, make up and all. The Dream Team have party hats and noise makers, Muraco in particular is having the time of his life out there.
Lance Russell: " You're real proud of yourself, aren't you Bill.."
Bill Dundee: " Brothah, I'm so proud, I'm throwing a party! LOOK, I even got a clown, haha.... I was just carrying on the Holiday tradition Banana Nose, beating Kingfish to a bloody pulp in the cage, tis the season mate!"
Lance Russell: " Real, real cute... I guess we should have all seen it coming, we ALL should have known better than to trust YOU, Dundee!"
Bill Dundee: " I don't care WHO trusted me and who didn't, all that matters is the King did brothah, and that was the plan! I ain't gonna answer why, 'cause any dummy out there who's been watching they know why, fact is I ain't NEVER been no friend to the King, this was a set up from the very get go Lancey. "
Lance Russell: " Just what I figured... "
Magnificent Muraco: " (blows his noise maker) GIVE THE MAN A PRIZE!"
Bill Dundee: " Truth of it all is, this is and has always been MY BABY... I called up the Dream, he pointed me towards Dr. D here, I had Muraco & Landel on my said since day one... Tommy Renesto came on out here weeks ago and called me the week link, he was wrong, boy was he ever wrong... it was RENESTO who had to go, so I played nice, I got the King involved, I got the King to BELIEVE I was on his side... I shared with him the satisfaction of running that GOOF Renesto out of town, just to SUCKER him on in! I set up the cage match, I asked for it, and here I AM, the SUPERSTAR, the LIVING LEGEND, throwing a party on the last episode of TV before the new year! THE KING IS DEAD, LONG LIVE THE DREAM TEAM!"
Lance Russell: " We're going to be hearing from the King a little later, he's down but I assure you, he's going to be looking for revenge. "
Bill Dundee: " Let him TRY.."
Buddy Landel: " Let them ALL try Russell, LOOK at who's standing in front of you here... Billy Dundee, the LIVING LEGEND, he's been Southern Champion so many times, he done lost count.... Magnificent Muraco, former Intercontinental Champion, Mid American Champion, heck he's held titles all throughout the world, David Schultz? The man wrote the book on taking names and kicking butt... Dream Machine? Even in a wheel chair he's STILL one of the baddest men on the planet... THIS... THIS right here, is the CREAM OF THE CROP. Never has there EVER been a group like this... 5 of the very best this sport has to offer, ON the same side... WHY we're UNSTOPPABLE Lance!"
Lance rolls his eyes, as the party HEADS to the ring for tag team action!
Lance Russell: " It's a possibility, I'll give you that, but when you've got guys like Tommy Rich, Austin Idol, and the King breathing down your back it really could go either way..."
Magnificent Muraco & "Nature Boy" Buddy Landel w/ Downtown Bruno, Bill Dundee, David Schultz & Dream Machine defeated Jerry Bryant & Jim Jameson when Landel made Bryant submit to the figure four at 3:05.
After the match, Muraco makes Bruno dance for his own amusement.
We're going back to back, with Billy Travis in action.
Billy Travis defeated Invader # 2 with a Russian legsweep at 4:01.
Travis joins Lance, as he's got something to say.
Billy Travis: " Lance, I saw something Monday Night, and it's real important I talk about it. I was backstage getting ready for that battle royal, and I saw it... I saw Don Fargo meet with Bill Dundee. At the time, I thought nothing of it, but now, I know something was up... "
Lance Russell: " Perhaps Fargo was in on the whole thing... thank you for sharing this information. Ladies and gentlemen, Billy Travis! Fans we're taking a break, when we return, we're talking to the King via telephone! "
Commercial Break
Lance Russell: " Welcome back, fans right now I'd like to welcome via telephone the one, the only, Jerry 'the King' Lawler. Jerry from what I understand you're still in the hospital... I've gotta ask the tough question, just when are you going to be released. "
Jerry Lawler: " That's right I'm here, they've got a television set up here for me and I'm watching, I saw what Bill Dundee had to say, and well, I feel like a fool. A damn fool for trusting the man. As far as when I'll be back, well with or without the doctor's okay I'm checking out of here today, and I'm training for Monday Night. Because, well Bill Dundee when he was at my side made some good points, he told me, even though it was a damn trick, he told me we had to nip this Dream Team thing in the butt, and you know what,he was right. So right here and now, I'm throwing out a challenge. Monday Night, whether I'm 100%, 60%, or even 20%, Monday Night at the Coliseum I'm going to end this thing with me and Dundee. LOSER LEAVES TOWN for the Southern Heavyweight Title, that's if that RUNT has the guts, to lay it all on the line. "
Dave Brown: " You sure about this King? After the beating you took this past Monday Night, you're surely going to be at a disadvantage..."
Jerry Lawler: " I'm as sure as I'll ever be Dave. 1985 has been the greatest year in my career, I've over come all the odds time and time again and have consistently come out on top, way I see it what better way to end the year then running another PUNK out of town, and there's no bigger PUNK then Bill Dun..."
And here comes Dundee now! FIRST THING he does is walk over to the phone and hang it up!
Lance Russell: " HEY! HEY! COME ON... "
Bill Dundee: " And if he calls back, I'll do it again! Lawler, you're a damn fool, you know that? Truth is, you're right, let's END THIS thing Monday Night! I've got BIG plans for that Southern title anyways. So let's do it Kingfish, let's finish what I started on Christmas, I'm gonna finish you King. You're broken, and you're too STUPID to rest up, it's an oppertunity I ain't about to pass up. Right now, Lawler I'm going to do something YOU CAN'T DO from no hospital bed, and go out there and WRESTLE... haha..."
Lance Russell: " As Dundee heads to the ring, let's recap here Dave... Jerry Lawler and Bill Dundee one on one this Monday Night for the Southern title, and it'll be LOSER LEAVES TOWN. Doesn't get any bigger than that, although I'm not sure it's the wisest of ideas. "
Keith Eric defeated "Superstar" Bill Dundee via DQ when Dundee used a piledriver at 2:10.
Dundee does it again after the bell, as Dundee is clearly sending a message towards the King for sure.
Lance is then joined by a "former world champion, and Olympic champion looking to make waves here in the CWA, alongside his manger the legendary "Ayatollah" Freddie Blassie, it's the Sheik of Iran, the Iron Sheik!"
Freddie Blassie: " Look at this man Russell, you said it, he's a former WORLDS champion, did you know he's ALSO the champion of Iran? The Champion of Europe, you know what that makes him to me? THE REAL WORLDS CHAMPION, if yah' catch my drift. "
Lance Russell: " Certainly and impressive resume for sure, and we've seen him here in the past, he's quite the athlete. "
Freddie Blassie: " They don't make 'em like the Iron Sheik anymore, they broke the mold with this man right here... no one is stronger, no one is tougher... "
Lance Russell: " Well he impressed us on Christmas Night making it to the end of that there 10,000 dollar battle royal, but he did however fall short to Tommy Rich. "
Freddie Blassie: " That pretty boy, PENCIL NECK GEEK, that BUM Tommy Rich got lucky..."
Iron Sheik: " He got lucky. He no can beat the Sheik, one on one, he no can do it. He American BUM, no american bum can beat the Sheik, he got lucky, I make him humble, I make him humble. He no be world champion, he no can do it, he no can beat the Sheik. All Arab people, come out, come out and watch the Iron Sheik, they coming to Memphis to watch the Sheik.. TANK YOU, TANK YOU, they say TANK YOU, when Sheik does his thing.. NO ONE like-a the Tommy Rich, HE'S BUM.... HE IS BUM! Lance, HE NO CAN BEAT THE SHEIK! He is WEAK, SHEIK IS STRONG.. HE'S IS AMERICAN BUM... YOU BETTER GET READY 'CAUSE SHEIK BORN READY... *SHEIK BEGINS TO SLAP HIS CHEST* ZOOP, ZOOP... IRAN NUMBER #1 AMERICA... PATOOIE!!!"
Lance Russell: " Tommy Rich is a former world champion, I wouldn't take him so lightly if I were you..."
Freddie Blassie: " Tommy Rich is A BUM, you heard the Sheik he's a BUM, and he's weak... LET'S GO to the ring, we'll show EVERYONE watching just what the Iron Sheik is about, right now.... GEEK!"
The Iron Sheik w/ "Ayatollah" Freddie Blassie defeated Johnny Rich via submission to the camel clutch at 3:30.
Post Match- Sheik's not breaking the hold, BUT HERE COMES JOHNNY'S COUSIN TOMMY TO LET HIM HAVE IT!!! TOMMY RICH SENDS THE IRON SHEIK SAILING OVER THE TOP ROPE TO A THUNDEROUS APPLAUSE! Blassie holds the Sheik back and talks him into an exit as Rich helps his little cousin to his feet.
Tommy joins Lance quickly after the match.
Tommy Rich: " Iron Sheik, Freddie Blassie ya'll want my attention YOU GOT IT! You can call me whatever the heck you want, but I'm an AMERICAN and I'm not gonna stand for none of this CRAP... Eddie Marlin, Jerry Jarrett, make the match, any time, any place... Iron Sheik Vs. Tommy Rich, baby... let's do it!"
Commercial Break
We're back and we've got Lawler on the phone yet again..
Jerry Lawler: " Bill Dundee you can hang up on me all you like, but come next week I won't be calling in and you won't be anywhere in sigh....."
AND HE'S OUT AND HANG'S UP ON THE KING YET AGAIN! Lance shoo's Dundee away... Dundee leaves smiling and a strutting.
