“SUPERDOME SUMMER SPECTACULAR”
July 6, 1985
The Superdome
New Orleans, LA
1. Bruce Hart makes his Mid South debut and scores a submission win with the Hart leglock in 8:57 of exciting action.
2. Nelson Royal defeats Mike Davis in 10:57 with the bulldog.
3. Mil Mascaras pins Villano I with a flying headbutt after 7:47 of lucha style action.
4. Buddy Roberts comes out to this music…
This leads many fans to speculate that he might be siding with Terry Gordy since he isn’t using Hayes’ music. Roberts is his usual heel self as he enters the ring. The music fades and is replaced with this:
Wendell Cooley, fresh off giving Ric Flair all he wanted on TV, makes his way out to a big ovation!
The match itself is fast paced and exciting. Cooley, definitely on a hot streak, pulls the upset with a backslide pin @8:33. Roberts sort of pitches a fit and bends referee Jerry Usher’s ear with claims of tight pulling and foreign objects, but doesn’t get very far with his protest.
5. Jumbo Tsuruta(w/Ken Mantell) takes on Chavo Guerrero in a meeting of international superstars. This has the feel of a match from a Japanese promotion, cleanly contested with plenty of strong technical skills from both men. Tsuruta’s size gives him the advantage most of the way. Chavo comes back to win with a senton off the middle turnbuckle at 7:22.

This music brings Kevin Sullivan, “Purple Haze” Mark Lewin, & Lord Humongous into the ring. This bizarre threesome is surrounded by several people dressed like Druids. Sullivan is carrying and caressing a golden spike and is acting even more bizarre than usual, his eyes rolling and his tongue stuck out.
The music changes:
Here come Kerry, Kevin, & Mike…..THE VON ERICHS!
As usual, the Texans are mobbed by fans! Kevin and Mike high five and side hug as many as possible while Kerry displays his technical skills by applying the Lone Star liplock on several Louisiana lovelies.
The Von Erichs use their athleticism and quick tags while Sullivan and his “dark soldiers just use brute force and viciousness. After about 12 minutes of action, Sullivan and his men have Mike tied in the ropes while Kerry and Humongous brawl on the floor as Kevin battles Lewin at ringside as well! Sullivan brings the golden spike into the ring and referee Tommy Gilbert immediately calls for the DQ! Sullivan is backing up, spike raised high! He’s going to nail the helpless Mike Von Erich with the Golden Spike! Magnum TA hits the ring as Sullivan charges at Mike! MAGNUM TA GIVES SULLIVAN THE BELLY TO BELLY! Outside the ring, Kevin posts Lewin and Kerry bodyslams Humongous! Magnum TA has saved the Von Erichs! Magnum raises Kerry’s, Kevin’s, and Mike’s hands in victory! Kerry grabs the house mic…
KERRY: Last year, at Texas Stadium, I beat Ric Flair and won the World Title! He can be beat and I think today is the day that Magnum TA will win the title!

It’s time for the Ghetto Street Fight! The music plays and here come “Nature Boy” Buddy Landel, Missy Hyatt, & One Man Gang! Gang is in jeans, a Chicago bears jersey, and motorcycle boots…he’s carrying his chain! Landel is not exactly dressed for a street fight…he’s in a white tux! Missy looks ravishing in a black cocktail dress. Then, the music changes…
Here come Tony Atlas & Butch Reed! They are dressed in T shirts, blue jeans, and work boots with their fists taped! Landel hurries Missy out of the ring and the brawl is on!
Gang uses his chain and his massive size to batter Atlas while Reed tosses Landel around the ring like a rag doll! Missy walks around ringside, screaming like a banshee! Atlas finally manages to get Gang’s chain and blast OMG with it while Landel manages to turn the tide of his battle with Reed by using a foreign object he pulled out of a pants pocket! Reed starts a comeback and Missy tosses her handbag into Landel! Reed intercepts the bag and nails landel with it, knocking Buddy out cold! It’s all legal in this match and Reed covers Landel for the pin! Time of the fall: 12:02. After the bout, Reed empties the contents of the handbag onto the mat: two bricks! The Gang actually carries an unconscious Landel out of the arena as Missy follows along crying!
8. Up next, the four team elimination match for the Mid South Tag Team Titles featuring 1) Tag Champs THE LOVE TRAIN (John Tatum & Randy Rose) managed by Christopher Love; 2) JACK & JERRY BRISCO; 4)GREG GAGNE & MAD DOG VACHON; THE ZAMBUIE EXPRESS, managed by Ken Mantell!
• Greg Gagne pins Randy Rose with a flying bodypress @ 8:22, eliminating the Love Train. This means they will not retain their belts and there will be new champions! Christopher Love is protesting vainly to referee Jerry Usher as Tatum and Rose are at each other’s throats!
• Mad Dog Vachon gets himself and Greg Gagne DQ’d @ 13:22 when he brings a chair into the ring to break up a double team by the Zambuie Express on Gagne!
• That leaves the Brisco Brothers and the Zambuie Express! The combination of Mantell at ringside and the big size advantage of the Express combines to make the Briscos the de facto fan favorites in this situation. In the end, Muhammad’s and Akeem’s bulk makes the difference as Muhammad pins Jerry Brisco @ 22:22 after a corner splash! THE ZAMBUIE EXPRESS ARE THE NEW MID SOUTH TAG TEAM CHAMPIONS! Mantell has grabbed the house mic from Mike McGuirk!
MANTELL: I told you people the Mantell Corporation would take over Mid South Wrestling! (holds up title belts) Look at this, Bill Watts! These belts are just the beginning!
9. Ken Mantell drives a convertible with longhorn steer horns on the front of it to the ring! The top is down and Stan Hansen, waving his bullrope in the air, is in the back of the car! Moments later, a monster truck enters the Superdome and Hacksaw Duggan is in the back of the truck, waving and giving fans a thumbs up! It’s time for the TEXAS BULLROPE MATCH!
Referee Tommy Gilbert gets the two competitors tied together by the bullrope, then it’s on! These two are like Roman gladiators as they hammer away on each other. Hansen is obviously more experienced with the bullrope and after about ten minutes of action, he has Duggan on his knees and uses the cowbell to bust Hacksaw open! Hansen continues to hammer away on Duggan’s bloody noggin with the bell! Cowboy Bill Watts leaves his seat at ringside to get a closer view! He gets to the ring apron just in time to see Hansen use the sharp edge of the bell to further slice Duggan open! Jim Duggan looks like a victim in a slasher flick! Watts has a white towel and he throws it in! BILL WATTS HAS STOPPED THE MATCH! Duggan is shaking his head and screaming “NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!”
Duggan grabs the top rope and pulls himself to his feet! Duggan is doing his famous stomp! Now, he’s telling Hansen to bring it on! Hansen charges at Duggan, lariat cocked and ready! Duggan ducks and Hansen goes flying over the top rope! Duggan uses the bullrope to drag Hansen back in and now Hacksaw is pounding Hansen with hamlike fists! Duggan has the cowbell and now, it’s Hansen’s turn to bleed and suffer as Duggan batters the Texan’s head with the cowbell! The ref is telling him to stop, but Duggan ain’t having it! Duggan unattaches himself from the bullrope and goes into a three point stance! SPEAR BY DUGGAN! Hansen bails out! Hansen and Mantell are leaving! Duggan gives the crowd a thumbs up and a “HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!” At ringside, Bill Watts is shaking his head in disbelief and awe at Duggan’s toughness!
10. It’s time now for the North American Title match with Freebird vs. Freebird! First, the challenger’s music…
A single spotlight follows Terry “Bamm Bamm” Gordy, dressed in his ring gear and a Lynrd Skynrd T shirt, to the ring. Most of the fans cheer for Gordy as he enters the ring.
The music changes for the champion and the boos start…
Michael “P.S” Hayes struts and gyrates his way to the ring with smoke and lasers. Hayes is surrounded by security dressed in riot gear and he wears his Confederate flag robe. He climbs onto the apron and has a staredown with his Freebird brother before leaping over the top rope into the ring, mounting the turnbuckles and removing his robe with a series of bumps and grinds!
After the music ends and referee Tommy Gilbert starts giving both men instructions, the third Freebird, Buddy “Jack” Roberts walks to ringside, dressed in street clothes, with a stoic look on his face. Roberts grabs a chair and takes a seat at ringside, making a point of being in a neutral corner.
Before the match begins, Gordy offers a handshake, but Hayes slaps his hand away! This bout builds slowly as these two men seem to know each other so well that they anticipate each other’s moves and neither man can get much of an advantage. As the bout wears on, Gordy begins to dominate the action. The climax comes when there is a three way collision in center ring between both wrestlers and referee Tommy Gilbert! Gilbert and Gordy both go down in the center of the ring! Gilbert and Gordy both look to be unconscious! Hayes, who looks just as dazed, falls back onto the ropes!
Wait a second! Roberts is out of his seat! Roberts climbs on the apron and pushes Hayes forward…Hayes falls onto the fallen Gordy! Roberts is slapping the mat to get the ref’s attention. A groggy Gilbert crawls over to where Hayes is lying on top of Gordy! One…Two…THREE! Gordy kicked out, but not in time! Roberts sided with Hayes when he said he would be neutral! Roberts has the title belt! Roberts gets in the ring and drapes the belt over Hayes’ shoulder. Now, Roberts is yelling at Gordy! Gordy slowly gets to his feet as Roberts continues to yell at him. ROBERTS SLAPS GORDY! GORDY DECKS ROBERTS! Now Hayes is up. Hayes looks like he is trying to make peace with Bamm Bamm! Terry looks like he is about to reconcile with Hayes! Roberts is back up and he nails Gordy from behind! Now, Hayes and Roberts double team Bamm Bamm! Roberts and Hayes beat Gordy down! Now, as Hayes puts the boots to Gordy, Roberts grabs the ring mic!
ROBERTS: Gordy! You are officially OUT of the Fabulous Freebirds! You turned your back on Michael and nobody does that and stays a Freebird!
Roberts has not only helped Hayes cheats his way to a win, he and Hayes have uncermoniusly dumped Gordy from the Freebirds! Hayes and Roberts leave victoriously as Gordy writhes in pain on the mat!
11. MAIN EVENT: NWA WORLD TITLE MATCH!!!
A spotlight shines on an entryway into the Superdome and this music plays….
THE CHALLENGER, MAGNUM TA, ENTERS THE SUPERDOME ON A HARLEY AND THE FANS RAISE THE ROOF! TA, dressed in a black motorcycle jacket, black leather cap and red wrestling trunks drives to the ring, parks his bike, dismounts, and climbs into the ring! Magnum mounts the turnbuckles and starts yelling for Flair!
A black limousine pulls into the Superdome and stops at the head of an aisle. A chauffeur emerges and opens the back door. Ric Flair, resplendent in a royal blue $10,000.00 Olivia Walker robe, exits the limo and slowly walks to the ring. Magnum paces the ring like a caged tiger. Flair finally enters, insisting that referee Alfred Neeley hold the ropes open for him. Magnum is fired up, gesturing for the champ to “bring it on”, but the wily Flair is making him wait.
Finally, the champ disrobes and removes the belt. Flair is wearing his red trunks tonight and is in excellent shape as usual.
For the first 15 minutes, the challenger takes it right to Flair and beats him from pillar to post! Flair comes back and goes to work on Magnum’s leg. TA makes comebacks, but Flair keeps goig right back to the leg At around the 30 minute mark, Magnum hits the belly to belly out of nowhere! One…Two….FLAIR GETS A LEG ON THE ROPE!
At that point, Magnum takes control. Magnum actually starts working Flair’s leg. Magnum begins to dominate the action. TA gets several two counts over the next several minutes and it looks like it’s all over when he applies the spinning toehold right in the center odf the ring! Flair is screaming and it looks like he’s ready to submit, but Flair manages to kick TA off of him! Flair gets to his feet…CHOP! CHOP! CHOP! Magnum comes back with forearms and a backhand! Magnum throws a big punch, but Flair ducks and hoists Magnum up and hits a shinbreaker! Now, here’s a big vertical suplex by the champ. “NOW WE GO TO SCHOOL!” FIGURE FOUR BY FLAIR!
MIKE MCGUIRK: TWO MINUTES REMAINING!
Magnum is in big trouble! You can see the pain etched in his face, but Magnum TA WILL NOT GIVE UP! Magnum is sitting up…he’s straining to turn this thing over!
MGUIRK: ONE MINUTE REMAINING IN THE TIME LIMIT!
MAGNUM TA REVERSES THE HOLD! Now, Flair is screaming and writhing in pain! Flair is desperately reaching for the ropes, but he’s too far away! The ref is asking Flair if he wants to give up….
THE BELL RINGS! The referee breaks the hold! The referee asks the timekeeper for the belt…Flair has rolled onto his back and is holding his knee. Magnum takes the belt from the ref. The ref is shaking his head….
MIKE: LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, THE TIME LIMIT HAS EXPIRED WITH NO WINNER! RIC FLAIR IS STILL THE NWA WORLD CHAMPION!
Magnum drops the belt onto Flair’s chest and walks tall out of the Superdome! The fans here are left with no doubt that Magnum TA is a future World Champion!
