WCW Monday Nitro 4/2/1995
Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Mike Tenay and Tony Schiavone welcome us to Toronto where we will see the semi-finals of the WCW World Heavyweight Title tournament. Plus, Lance Storm will team with the mercenary Kintaro Kanemura to face off with Mitsuharu Misawa and Kenta Kobashi. We’ll also see Billy Kidman take on Psychosis – in advance of the Mysterio/Kidman vs Guerrera/Psychosis match at WCW Uncensored this weekend.
The WCW World Heavyweight Title Tournament semi-finals open up with Chris Benoit taking on the Wolfpack’s Kevin Nash, who is joined at ringside by Scott Hall. Benoit and Nash pull no punches in this match and both gain several near falls. The finish sees Diamond Dallas Page come out of the crowd and lay out Scott Hall on the floor with the Diamond Cutter! DDP smiles and taunts Kevin Nash, who charges out to the floor and follows Page up the aisle. Nash loses focus and actually ends up getting counted out and he freaks out when the bell rings! Nash charges back to the ring to argue with the referee, while Chris Benoit raises his hands in victory and DDP gloats about sabotaging Nash’s plans out on the floor.
WCW President Ric Flair comes out and says he is here tonight to make a major announcement. Flair has said his administration would be growing and it has because a major star has just signed a WCW contract. Ric then brings out his newest colleague – Jeff Jarrett! Jarrett makes his way out of the ring wearing a suit – not the cowboy hat and flashy jackets he wore during his previous WCW stint. Jarrett gets on the microphone and says he resisted coming to WCW for so many years and when he showed up here in 1994, he realized he should have held to his guns. The brass here in WCW gave him a cowboy hat and told him to get singing lessons. Jarrett says he made the best of it, but it was crap and that’s why he quit! The only reason he came back is because a man of vision has the power now… Ric Flair! Jeff Jarrett says Ric Flair sees his potential and his not going to put him on a leash like J.J. Dillon and the other WCW executives tried to do. At this point, the interview is interrupted by a commotion once again caused by the man in the rafters. Jeff Jarrett leaves the ring and charges up through the crowd as Ric Flair goes nuts in the ring. The mysterious man once again walks away before Flair’s goons can get to him. Mike Tenay mentions that he got a quick view of the man and he looked very familiar.
Tony Schiavone and Mike Tenay then send us to a VTR featuring highlights of WCW World Tag Team Champions Rick & Scott Steiner:
Billy Kidman squared off with Psychosis up next, with Juventud Guerrera and Rey Mysterio Jr. on the outside. Kidman kept up with Psychosis and managed to gain a near fall after coming off the top rope with a flying dropkick. Psychosis kicked out and managed to gain the momentum again, when Guerrera tripped Kidman coming off the ropes. Psychosis looked to finish off Kidman with a tomb-stone piledriver, but Billy spun out of it and landed several shots. Juventud Guerrera then got on the apron, but Rey Mysterio Jr. was up as well and those two brawled on the apron! Psychosis and Kidman are trading kicks in the ring as well, but Billy is able to sling Psychosis to the ropes and sends the masked man crashing into both Mysterio and Guerrera! Kidman then connected with a sit-out power-bomb and scored the win! Guerrera and Psychosis protested with the official after the match, while Mysterio and Kidman once again argued.
Jim Powers and The Panther were the unfortunate talent when The Wolfpack stormed the ring. Scott Hall was favoring his neck after the Diamond Cutter, but that didn’t stop him from laying out Panther with the Razor’s Edge. Jim Powers landed a few shots to the gut on Kevin Nash, but Big Daddy Cool drilled him with a big knee and a Jacknife power-bomb! Nash got on the microphone and said DDP has hell to pay for rearing his ugly little head again. Kevin challenges DDP to a match at WCW Uncensored, but Scott Hall interrupts and says he wants Page first since he took the Diamond Cutter earlier. Hall promises to take DDP apart, but save just enough for Nash to get a piece. Kevin Nash smiles slyly and says he’ll talk to Ric Flair – he’s sure he can convince Ric Flair to book the match. Scott Hall promises that Diamond Dallas Page is going to get carved up at WCW Uncensored.
The Destruction Crew of Rick Fuller & Wayne “The Train” Bloom were waiting in the ring for their scheduled opponents The Taskmaster and Mortis. Kevin Sullivan and Mortis did come down to the ring, but Sullivan said he would not be wrestling tonight. The Taskmaster then introduces Mortis’s tag team partner – hailing from the land of fiction, Hugh Morrus! Morrus ran down to the ring laughing like a maniac and then a four-man brawl broke out. This was far from a squash as Fuller and Bloom really worked over both Hugh Morrus and Mortis at points, but the Dungeon of Doom took control late in the match. Hugh Morrus was able to score the pin on Rick Fuller after coming off the top rope with a moon-sault. The Taskmaster joined Hugh Morrus in cackling with glee after the match, while Mortis yelled at fans in the audience.
Buff Bagwell then came out to the ring and challenged Alex Wright to a pose-down. Alex Wright complied and while smaller than Bagwell, he garnered far more cheers than Buff. As Wright played to the cheering crowd, Buff Bagwell leveled him from behind and connected with a big clothesline. Bagwell then pulled Wright in and connected with a DDT! Wright stumbled to his feet, only to get a Buff Blockbuster off the second rope! Bagwell then posed in the center of the ring and picked the microphone back up. Buff Bagwell: “I think it’s been proven tonight that I’m buff, I’m the stuff and the girls just can’t get enough! See you at Uncensored – you kraut stooge!” Buff Bagwell then poses a little more and leaves the ring to a shower of boos.
Jerry Lynn took on Super Calo in our next match, which proved to be all-action from bell to bell. Super Calo scored early on with some flashy moves off the top rope, including a twisting leg drop. The masked man then comes off the top rope with a senton splash, but Lynn kicks out. Jerry Lynn rebounds with a rocker dropper and then goes up top for a missile dropkick. Lynn then connected with a brainbuster and went for the pin, but Super Calo was able to kick out. Super Calo was lifted to his knees by Lynn, which allowed Calo to land a head-butt to the stomach. Super Calo hit the ropes for a leaping clothesline, but Lynn caught Calo in mid-air with a belly-to-belly suplex. Lynn then pulled Super Calo into a cradle piledriver and made the cover to score the big win!
The next match featured Mitsuhara Misawa and Kenta Kobashi, seconded by Gary Hart, taking on Lance Storm and the mercenary Kintaro Kanemura. Storm was like a man possessed early on and as he landed a series of big moves on both Misawa and Kobashi. Lance then made the tag to Kanemura, who shocking entered the ring, kicked the unsuspecting Storm in the stomach and laid him out with a sit-out powerbomb! Kanemura then walked out of the ring, where he was handed a wad of cash by Gary Hart. Kintaro Kanemura then simply walked off, while Misawa and Kobashi continued to maul Lance Storm in the ring. Misawa eventually scored the pin with the Tiger Driver ’91! Lance Storm has once again been double-crossed and left laying in a WCW ring. This guy sure doesn’t have a lot of luck. A clearly furious Lance Storm is helped out of the ring after the match.
The semi-finals of the WCW World Heavyweight Title Tournament is our final bout of the night as The Giant takes on Ice Train. Ice Train is coming off a huge moral victory last week when he beat Avalanche, but he’s facing an even bigger man this week. Train unloaded on The Giant early on and seemed to have the big man dizzy with a series of clotheslines. His big mistake came when he attempted to slam The Giant, but couldn’t get him up. The Giant drove his powerful forearm down across Ice Train’s back and then leveled him with a head-butt. The Giant then got Ice Train by the throat and drove him to the canvas with a choke-slam to score the relatively quick win! The Giant and The Taskmaster celebrated after the match, but the mood changed when Chris Benoit hit the ring! Benoit was not afraid at all as he stepped up to The Giant just as WCW President Ric Flair hit the ring. The Giant and Benoit were shouting insults at each other, while Ric Flair and The Taskmaster tried to keep the peace. The show goes off the air just as it looks they are about to begin brawling.
