Craig Johnson welcomes fans to the Denver Merchandise Mart for what is sure to be a great evening of professional wrestling. Johnson tells the crowd that while it may almost be time for March Madness on the basketball court, the real March Madness is going to be right here in the Merchandise Mart. For the next three weeks, some of the top wrestlers from around the world are going to compete for the 1st Annual Rocky Mountain Cup. Tonight, there will be eight sweet sixteen matches, with the winners advancing to the final eight, to be held next week right here in Denver, Colorado. Then, in two weeks, we will have both the semi-finals and final matches to determine the winner of the prestigious Rocky Mountain Cup. Johnson tells fans that the booking committee here at Rocky Mountain Wrestling has brought wrestlers from all over the world to compete in the tournament. Some of these first round matches could be main event matches at arenas around the nation. Johnson then runs through the Sweet Sixteen matches for the night:
Billy Jack Haynes v. Col. Debeers
Emilio Charles Jr. v. Angel of Death
Rambo (Luc Poirier) v. Leatherface
Chavo Guerrero Jr. v. Ian Rotten
Billy Travis v. Gorgeous Jimmy Garvin
Scott Putski v. Horace Boulder
Christopher Daniels v. Vampire Warrior
Mando Guerrero v. King Kong Bundy
Johnson then introduces the crowd to the man who will be joining him at the announce table for the next three weeks, the legendary Kevin Von Erich!
Von Erich talks about the strength of the field in the tournament, and how there is no clear cut favorite. He mentions the mix of veterans and up and coming wrestlers. Von Erich notes that the Mile High City is in for three weeks of amazing wrestling action.
Before wrestling action commences, Johnson and Von Erich are joined by King Kong Bundy.
King Kong Bundy tells the crowd that this tournament is a waste of time, as there is no one in professional wrestling who can beat him. Bundy argues that they should go ahead and give him the Rocky Mountain Cup now, because he’s going to win it no matter what. Bundy reminds the audience that he is 6’6, 456 pounds, and tonight, they are going to see the wrath of destruction!
Johnson mentions that Bundy has to be considered one of the favorites in the tournament, then introduces the two competitors facing each other in the opening match, and renewing one of the storied rivalries in professional wrestling
Match #1
Col. Debeers defeated Billy Jack Haynes when Debeers used a foreign object out view of the ref, stunning Haynes and leaving him prey to a double underhook facebuster. (13:01) Debeers taunts the crowd on his way out the ring, telling them he will soon be taking the Rocky Mountain Cup back to South Africa.
Johnson and Von Erich are joined by Mando Guerrero and his nephew, Chavo Guerrero, Jr.
Mando Guerrero tells the crowd that he knows he has a tough challenge tonight when he steps into the ring with King Kong Bundy. Guerrero tells the audience he will do all he can to take down the monster known as Bundy for the great fans in the Mile High City. Chavo Guerrero Jr. says that simply because he’s rookie, he should not be underestimated. If you look at the sports world, Penny Hardaway is making a name for himself as a rookie, and there is no reason he can’t do the same!
Von Erich mentions that he has faced the Guerrero family before, and these two wrestlers cannot be overlooked.
Match #2
Emilio Charles Jr. defeated Angel of Death in impressive style when Charles Jr. landed a flying splash and covered for the pin. (8:54) AoD complained to the ref that Charles Jr. held his trunks, but this false complaint falls on deaf ears.
Match #3
Rambo (Luc Poirier) defeated Leatherface when Rambo landed a drop backbreaker and covered for the pin. (9:12) Before the match began, Leatherface alarmed many members of the crowd when he brought his chainsaw to the ring. Luckily, the chainsaw was confiscated by ring officials, over the vocal protestations of Leatherface.
Match #4
Chavo Guerrero Jr. defeated Ian Rotten via pinfall following a tornado DDT and pinfall. (8:54) Rotten brought a chair into the ring and attempted to use it on Guerrero. However, Guerrero was able to land a quick dropkick, forcing the chair to strike Rotten, and leaving him prey for the DDT.
Before the next match, Gorgeous Jimmy Garvin arrives at the announce table. He has some choice words for Kevin Von Erich, before launching into a tirade.
Jimmy Garvin denigrates the city of Denver, referring to it as a dusty cowtown filled with losers. He claims that he’s used to staying at fine hotels, dating beautiful women, two things that Denver does not have! He bemoans that the downside of winning the Rocky Mountain Cup is that he has to stay in this hellhole for three whole weeks. He then focuses his attention on Billy Travis. He says that Travis likes to call himself the party machine. Well, no one parties quite like the gorgeous one! Tonight, he’s going to do to Travis what he did to Kevin Von Erich so many times: pin him 1…2..3!
Match #5
Jimmy Garvin defeated Party Machine Billy Travis in a hard-fought contest when Garvin used brass knuckles out of view of the referee, then landing a brainbuster on the stunned Travis. (10:44)
Match #6
Scott Putski defeated Horace Boulder in a battle of youngsters, when Putski landed a Polish driver then covered for the pin. (8:32)
Match #7
In one of the most enjoyable matches of the evening, Vampire Warrior defeated Christopher Daniels via pinfall in a fast-paced affair, when Daniels missed a top-rope splash, allowing Vampire Warrior to administer an impaler DDT. (17:56)
Match #8
King Kong Bundy defeated Mando Guerrero when the big man simply overpowered the smaller Guerrero, landing a big splash and covering for the pin (8:01) Despite winning the match, Bundy continued to assault his fallen opponent. He landed another big splash…and another. Mando remained unconscious on the ring apron while Bundy continued his brutal assault. Finally, Chavo Jr. ran from the back to aid his Uncle. The smaller Guerrero grabbed a chair on his way to the ring and struck Bundy from behind. The giant was stunned, allowing Chavo to hit him with another shot. Bundy was stumbling when Guerrero landed another chair shot, knocking the big man off his feet! As Bundy lay on the ring apron, medical personnel was able to tend to Mando and assist him out of the ring. Bundy finally regained his senses, and immediately went after Chavo. An irate Bundy was held back by Denver Police officers, while Chavo helped his cousin to the back. Bundy screamed to Chavo that next week, he’d pay for interfering in his business!
Johnson thanks the audience for attending, and reminds them that next weekend, there will be four more tournament matches, as well as a number of other great bouts.
(Old friends, I want to thank Kimmel for allowing me to write a short program for my hometown of Denver, Colorado. For those of you who remember my tendency to fall behind, fear not, as all three cards have already been written. Hope you enjoy!)
