WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING presents:
WCW NITRO
Convention Hall
Asbury Park, NJ
October 7, 1994
Announcers: Mike Tenay & “Freebird” Michael PS Hayes
Ring Announcer: Lance Russle
Interviewer: Joe Pedicino
Referees: Danny Davis, Charles Robinson & Mickey Jay
*”The Professor” Mike Tenay and “Freebird” Michael PS Hayes welcome us to WCW Nitro, which is coming to you live from Asbury Park, NJ. Tenay says that road to WCW Halloween Havoc begins here tonight. Hayes says he’s heard rumblings that the usually cool and calm “Million Dollar Man” Ted Dibiase is a bit nervous about putting his career on the line against WCW World Heavyweight Champion Ric Flair on Halloween. Joe Pedicino will have an exclusive interview with Dibiase tonight. In our main event, WCW United States Heavyweight Champion “The Natural” Dustin Rhodes will put his title on the line against Taz, the very man who’ll face his father Dusty at Halloween Havoc. Plus, the brand new WCW World Cruiserweight Champion “The Ice Man” Dean Malenko will put his gold on the line against a great from Japan, the Great Sasuke. All that and more, but we have a match ready to go in the ring…
1) The Legion of Doom (Hawk & Animal) (w/ “Precious” Paul Ellering) vs The Gladiator & David Haskins: Welcome to WCW, David. Haskins gets his ass handed to him by the LOD, who rush the ring and brutally maul both opponents. Hawk clearly has the win in hand after a leaping first drop on Haskins, but he’s not ready to finish things off just yet. Animal hits the ring to clothesline Gladiator off the apron and then picks Haskins up on his shoulder. Hawk then flies off the top rope to connect with a brutal Doomsday Device. Hawk makes the cover and scores the dominating win. WINNERS: THE LEGION OF DOOM (3:11)
*Joe Pedicino steps into the ring after the match to interview Paul Ellering and the Legion of Doom. Ellering does one of his unique promos, where he says all good things must come to an end. Paul says the Can-Ams have gotten away with bloviating and outlasting lesser teams like the washed-up Midnight Express and Pretty Wonderful. Paul says in the last month, Hawk and Animal have proved that the LOD are just as dangerous, just as vicious and just as dominant as they ever were. At Halloween Havoc, the LOD will climb to the top of the mountain again by not only beating the Can-Am Express, but brutalizing them and sending them to the hospital. Hawk pipes up: “Furnas, Kroffat – you don’t like it? WE DON’T CARE!!!! Ohhhhhhhhhhh what a rush!” Hawk and Animal pose as we take our first commercial break…

*Joe Pedicino is backstage with WCW World Heavyweight “Nature Boy” Ric Flair, who put his title on the line one more time against Ted Dibiase at Halloween Havoc. Flair says it’s great to finally in the driver’s seat and that’s something he won’t be giving up. Ric says for years, wrestling journalists have been debating who the best wrestler in the sport is and it always comes down to Ted Dibiase and himself. Over the last few months, he and Ted have had several battles, with both scoring wins. At Halloween Havoc, the age old debate will be settled once and for all when a title changes hands or a career ends. Flair tells Dibiase he’s lucky he has so much money because he’s going to have a lot of time to spend it starting November 1. He’ll be able to buy yachts, cars and even companies, but the one thing he’ll have no need to buy is more wrestling tights. Flair: “I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. To be the man, you have to… BEAT the man. Dibiase, all the money in the world can’t make THAT happen for YOU. WOOOOOOOOO!!!!” Joe Pedicino thanks the champ and sends us back to the ring…
2) WCW World Television Champion “The British Bulldog” Davey Boy Smith vs. Koko B. Ware: The Bulldog receives quite a reaction from the fans as he parades around ringside with the title finally around his waist. Smith makes time to shake hands with some of the fans and then does the same with his opponent. The Birdman is a game competitor and he starts off strong, but the Bulldog’s strength is just too much for him. Smith connects with a stalling vertical suplex and a military press slam, before driving Koko into the canvas with the running powerslam. WINNER: WCW WORLD TV CHAMP DAVEY BOY SMITH (6:14)
*The WCW World TV Champion stops for an interview with Joe Pedicino in the aisle way. Smith says he promised the people he’d get the title back and run off either Finlay or Regal and that’s what he did. Pedicino announces that Bulldog will defend his title against the unpredictable Mankind at Halloween Havoc. Davey puts over Mankind as very dangerous, but says not even a psychopath will end his run as WCW TV Champion so soon. Davey Boy: “Bring all your tricks, mate, because you’re going to need them all and more to match that bite of this bulldog!” The British Bulldog pats Joe Pedicino on the shoulder and then walks off as Joe throws us to another commercial…

*Steven Regal is standing in the before the next match and he asks for the microphone. Regal says he’s “sick and bloody” tired of being kept down by the ass-kissers like Davey Boy Smith and these fickle American fans. He says it’s true that he comes from the aristocracy, but what these fans don’t know is he also broke into wrestling the hard way, wrestling at carnival shows in Blackpool, England. It’s time he starts getting back to that mentality because clearly in WCW, you have to take what you want because it isn’t equal opportunity. Regal says he’s brought in a man he used to team with in England and together they will win the WCW World Tag Team Titles. That man is Dave Taylor! Taylor makes his way out. Both Regal and Taylor are wearing matching black and purple tights, boots and knee-pads…
3) Steven Regal & Dave Taylor vs. “Wild-Eyed Southern Boy” Steve Armstrong & Johnny Ace: Regal and Taylor obviously have a lot of history because they show some incredible teamwork. They basically keep Steve Armstrong on their side of the ring for the entire second-half of match. Regal lands a series of suplexes and then tags in Taylor, who applies a devastating surfboard submission. Taylor releases the hold just before Armstrong can submit and then tags Regal back in. Taylor connects with a backbreaker on Steve and then holds him place, while Regal leaps off the second rope and lands a knee drop to Armstorng’s throat. Regal makes the cover to score the win, while Dave Taylor holds off Johnny Ace. WINNERS: STEVEN REGAL & DAVE TAYLOR (5:45)
*VTR: Mike Tenay is standing outside Ted Dibiase’s palatial estate in Orlando Florid, where he is greeted by The Taylor Made Man. Terry Taylor tells Mike Tenay that The Million Dollar Man is very busy training for his match at Halloween Havoc, but he’ll see Tenay for a moment. We then cut inside where we see Dibise working out in his home gym, which is complete with a wrestling ring. He’s actually throwing punches with a trainer, who has his back to the camera. Dibiase stops when he sees Terry Taylor bring in Mike Tenay. Tenay looks shocked as the trainer turns around to reveal – boxing legend Smokin’ Joe Frazier. A surprised Tenay asked why Frazier would be helping Ted Dibiase. Frazier laughs and says, “Everybody’s got a price, my brother!” Dibiase tells Tenay that his career is on the line so he’s buying the absolute BEST trainers that money can buy. Dibiase then gets back to training and throws some mean looking punches. The vignette closes with The Million Dollar Man looking into the camera and saying: “My career is SAFE, your title ISN’T! YAAAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!” Smokin’ Joe just shrugs his shoulders as we cut to commercial…

*Joe Pedicino interviews “The World’s Most Dangerous Man” Ken Shamrock, who will be facing Meng right here next week on WCW Nitro. Pedicino says lots of people will be looking forward to this because both Meng and Shamrock have been nearly unstoppable since coming to WCW. Shamrock talks about proving all his critics wrong by winning some big matches, especially over the former WCW TV Champion Mike Rotunda. Next week, he gets his biggest challenge when he faces off with Meng, but he’s not easily intimidated. If Meng is looking for a war, he’ll get one. Shamrock says once he’s through with Meng, he’s going to start working his way towards championship gold…
4) “Power Warrior” Kensuke Sasaki (w/ Paul Ellering) vs. Bunkhouse Buck (w/ Col. Parker): The Power Warrior is trying to rebound following his loss to Meng at Clash of the Champions, but he has tough competition here from Buck. Buck attacks Sasaki as he enters the ring, but he’s fought off with some stinging kicks to the stomach. The finish sees Bunkhouse Buck miss a running knee drop, with Sasaki rolling away at the last second. As Buck gets back to his feet, Sasaki catches him with a hurricanrana and makes the cover to get back on the winning road. WINNER: KENSUKE SASAKI (9:38)
*Joe Pedicino steps into the ring to interview Paul Ellering and Kensuke Sasaki after the match. Before the interview gets going, Bobby Eaton enters the ring and says he has something to say. Eaton says he’s minding his own business in the back before, when he hears Paul Ellering call him a has-been. Bobby came out here to give Ellering a chance to apologize. Ellering says sometimes the truth hurts – and the truth is the Midnight Express LOST to The Can-Am Express and Eaton’s partner has abandoned him. Eaton says it isn’t his fault that Stan Lane’s a gutless coward, but he’s here right now and ready for a fight if Ellering wants one. Kensuke Sasaki steps in front of his manager, but Ellering just laughs and tells Power Warrior it’s okay. At that same moment, Bobby Eaton cheap-shots Kensuke Sasake and clips his leg. Paul Ellering tries to grab Eaton, but Bobby shoves him aside. Eaton lands a series of elbow drops on Sasaki’s right knee and then drives his own knee into it several times. The LOD are soon out and dive into the ring, just in time for Bobby Eaton to roll to the floor. The camera zooms in on Bobby Eaton shouting, “Next time you better watch your mouth, punk!” Something has clearly gotten into Bobby Eaton…

*VTR: “The Heartbreak Kid” Shawn Michaels apologizes for not being at Nitro this week, but promises all his fans that they’ll get to see him in action next week against Hiroshi Hase. Michaels says the man from the rising sun is apparently great, but let’s face it – he’s Shawn Michaels. Another person who pales in comparison to HBK is the WCW United States Champion Dustin Rhodes. Shawn says he’s going to do Dustin a favor and make him a part of history at Halloween Havoc. For all of eternity, Dustin Rhodes will be in the records books as the man who lost the US Title to Shawn and kicked off HBK’s meteoric rise to the top of the wrestling world. Shawn tells Dustin he’ll see him next week and closes by announcing, “Shawn Michaels has LEFT the building!” HBK walks off as the camera pans outside of his beachside cabana to a shot of the ocean…
5) WCW World Cruiserweight Champion “The Ice Man” Dean Malenko vs. The Great Sasuke: Malenko has a tough schedule ahead of him as he not only has to win here, but he’s also signed to defend the gold against in a rematch against Jushin Thunder Liger at Halloween Havoc ’94. This one is action-packed and is broken up by a commercial break in the middle. Malenko tries to keep things on the ground here, but Sasuke uses his quickness to fluster The Ice Man. Sasuke gets on a run with a series of kicks to the leg and then floors Dean with a spinning back heel kick. He then goes up to the top rope and flies off with a diving dropkick, but Malenko pulls back and causes Sasuke to crash into the canvas. Dean then immediately applies the Texas Cloverlead and really cinches back on it here. Sasuke has no choice but to tape out, making Dean Malenko’s first defense of the WCW World Cruiserweight Title a successful one! WINNER: WCW CRUISERWEIGHT CHAMP DEAN MALENKO (11:06)
*Joe Pedicino is in the locker-room with “Thrill Seeker” Lance Storm, who made his WCW debut at Clash of the Champions. Storms talks about his career in Canada also wrestling in Mexico, but it’s time to take his career to the next level and the only place to do that is here in WCW. Storm is looking to face the very best competition and says he has his eye on Jushin Thunder Liger’s WCW World Cruiserweight Title. Next week, Storm will be in action against another promising cruiserweight, Crowbar. Lance puts over Crowbar as another rising star, even if he is a bit of a weirdo. Next week, the Thrill Seeker promises to get another win under his belt and move up the ladder of success…

*Taz and his manager Bill Alphonso are at ringside for an interview before the main event. Taz says he can’t wait to get the “fat man” in the ring at Halloween Havoc so he can have the pleasure of choking out a legend. Taz says Dusty Rhodes has taken on dinosaurs like Abdullah The Butcher and Bruiser Brody, but he’s next faced a total package like himself. Taz says not only is he the best in-ring technician, not only does he have no fear, but he’s also driven by total hatred for anyone and anything that stands in his way. Tonight, Taz promises to teach Dusty a lesson by crippling his son and taking the US Heavyweight Title. Joe Pedicino says if he does win the US Title, that will likely upset his frequent ally Shawn Michaels’ plans to win the gold from Rhodes. Taz looks at annoyed at the question and says, “Too bad – so FREAKIN’ sad!!!” Taz then steps into the ring as Bill Alphonso blows that annoying whistle several times…
6) WCW United States Heavyweight Champion Dustin Rhodes vs. Taz (w/ Bill Alphonso): Taz taunts Dustin before the bell and ends up getting into a slugging match with him. Taz works over Dustin by hitting a few suplexes and specifically targets his neck. Rhodes rebounds after connecting with a running lariat. Dustin covers and gets the two count, but Taz kicks out. Bill Alphonso then gets on the apron and blows his whistle, distracting Dustin. Taz attacks Rhodes from behind and plants him with a belly-to-back suplex. At this point, the crowd roars as “The American Dream” Dusty Rhodes makes his way down to the ring, climbs up the ring steps and levels Bill Alphonso with a Bionic Elbow! Taz charges over and gets in Dusty’s face – and The Dream won’t back down. From behind, Dustin is up and he bouncs off the ropes and catches the distracted Taz with the running bulldog! Dustin is right there with the cover for the 1-2-3!! Dustin gets a big win here! After the match, Dustin and Dusty celebrate on the floor, while a furious Taz stomps around the ring and shouts threats at The American Dream. The camera zooms in on Bill Alphonso, who looks to be seeing stars out on the arena floor. WINNER: WCW US CHAMP DUSTIN RHODES
*VTR: WCW World Tag Team Champions The Can-Am Express (Doug Furnas & Dan Kroffat) are standing in front of the WCW logo. Furnas says all this talk about the return of the LOD’s edge is laughable. They’re still the same dumb muscleheads that they’ve always been – and they’ll react the same way to having to actually wrestle that always have, they’ll lose. Kroffat chimes in, saying that he and Furnas wont’ sink to the LOD’s attempts to brawl. The LOD will have to actually wrestle to win the World Tag Team Champions and everyone knows they aren’t capable of doing that. After Halloween Havoc, the legend of the Legion of Doom will be dead and buried…
