So this is nowhere near what I wanted to do, but the demolition, rebuild, and clean up of my house after the leak was allot more involved than I had originally envisioned. Thankfully all the finishing touches are being put on it and not only can you not tell that anything ever happened, the house looks a 1,000 times better. I joked with my wife we ought to just sell it now because it’ll probably never look any better than it does now, probably not the best joke to have made after 7 weeks of elbow grease to make the house livable again. Anyway, here is a recap of Starrcade 84, following will be posts for each month catching NWA up. Thanks for putting up with me as I tried to rebuild my house, and I hope you enjoy what I have coming in 1985
First let’s take a look at the results from Starrcade 84:
To open the show, and a match not shown on Closed Circuit, Keith Larsen defeated Thunderfoot with a cross body block after ducking a clothesline.
The first match on the Closed Circuit broadcast featured Tiger Mask defending the NWA World Junior Heavyweight Championship against Kendell Windham, the young second generation star gave it all he had, but it wasn’t enough to defeat the masked World Champion, who wowed the crowd with moves many had never seen before. Tiger Mask sealed the victory after a diving headbutt. The two competitors shook hands after the bout.
An unadvertised match took place second as the legendary Johnny Weaver face the turncoat Don Kernodle. The Koloffs were not in Don’s corner as they were still upset at Don’s inability to eliminate Jay Youngblood on World Championship Wrestling. Kernodle and Weaver had a very mat based battle, and Weaver was able to put Kerndole down for the count with the Weaver Lock.
Next up, the Odd Couple, Dick Slater and “The Boogie Woogie Man” Jimmy Valinat faced Paul Jones Army, Lord Jonathan Boyd and Rip Morgan, in an all-out brawl!!! Jones tried to get involved himself several times, but he couldn’t stop Slater and Valiant from defeating Boyd and Morgan. Valiant pinned Morgan after a Boogie Woogie Elbow , Slater and Valiant tossed the Army from the ring and Slater then chased Jones into the ring for Valiant. Jones tried to beg off but Valiant was all over him, Valiant knocked Jones out cold with a piledriver and Slater pulled a barber kit out from under the ring. Denny Brown and Bugsy Mcgraw ran down to keep an eye on things as Valiant shaved Jones’ head, making good on his promise to make Jones a bald headed geek!!!
The fans were in great spirits before the next match began, but those spirits were soon to be crushed as “Gorgeous” Jimmy Garvin battled Sam Houston. Before the match Bill Apter appeared and awarded Sam Houston with the Rookie of the Year award, Garvin was not impressed by that and grabbed the microphone demanding to know where his award was, when Apter didn’t have one for Garvin, the self-proclaimed Gorgeous One lost it. Garvin jumped Houston and started beating on the poor lad, but Houston was able to turn things around and soon had Garvin reeling, that all came to an end however when Garvin ducked a cross body block from the top rope by Houston. Garvin then gave Houston a brainbuster in the center of the ring to seal the victory. But it was what happened after the match that may go down as one of the most remembered events of this night. After getting his hand raised, Garvin put the boots back to Houston before throwing him through the ropes. Garvin then followed the young man out to the cold, hard concrete floor and executed a brainbuster on Houston!!!! Medics rushed out as Houston had to be put on a back board and stretchered out of the building. Garvin was pelted with garbage as he made his way back to the locker room.
The crowd didn’t have much time to catch its breath after that one as “The Ragin Bull” Manny Fernandez puts the United States Title on the line against “The Macho Man Randy Savage along with manager Frank Dusek in a match that truly stole the show. Savage and Fernandez threw caution to the wind and just kept going at each other, several false finishes as many times it looked like Fernandez or Savage had the win only for the other to kick out at the last second. Savage almost won the match by count out when Savage hit a Double Ax Handle from the top rope to Manny on the concrete floor, but Dusek rolled Manny in to beat the count. Savage then covered Manny, but the Bull was still able to kick out. Savage then pulled Manny to his feet and whipped him into the ropes, but Manny reversed the whip and Dusek accidently tripped up Savage instead of the Bull!!!! Savage staggered up to his feet and was hit by the flying forearm by The Bull!!!!! Manny then made the cover and got the three count!!! The Bull got his US Title and headed to the back, Savage got to his feet and couldn’t believe it, he grabbed Dusek by the shirt and threw him across the ring!!! Dusek tried to plead his case as Savage stormed to the back!!!
A seven minute intermission is then held, David and Tony talked about the things they had seen so far. We also saw a brief clip of Flair defeating Harley Race last year at Starrcade 84, Bob Caudle in the locker room spoke with Ric Flair about facing Tully in the 2 out of 3 falls match later tonight, he then spoke with Ricky Steamboat about battling Wahoo later, and finally with the Awesome Twosome about those same matches.
The World Tag Team Titles were on the line in the next bout. Jay and Mark Youngblood put their titles on the line against Ivan and Nikita Koloff in a battle of the USA vs. USSR!!! Jay and Mark had only recently become World Tag Team Champions, having defeated Ivan and Don Kernodle a month previous, in Charlotte on Thanksgiving Night, now they have to defend the title against Ivan and Ivan’s monstrous nephew. Jay and Mark came out to fight and ready to retain their titles. They came in with the game plan of keeping Ivan in the ring and staying away from Nikita, they were able to succeed for a time, but Mark hurt his knee on a leapfrog and Ivan uses it to his advantage to clobber Mark and make the tag to Nikita. Nikita came in like the Russian Wrecking Ball that he is, Mark and Jay threw everything they had at him, but it didn’t seem to faze the Russian monster! Mark gets caught by the Russian Sickle and that’s all she wrote as Nikita and Ivan walk out with the NWA World Tag Team Titles!!!! Nikita beats on his chest and holds the tag title up in the air while Ivan waves the Russian Flag!!! Several wrestlers come out to help Mark Youngblood limp to the back.
One of the two big main events is next as Ricky Steamboat battles Wahoo McDaniels in an Indian Strap Match, since Wahoo stole the US Title from Steamboat roughly six months ago, these two men have been battling each other all over the territory. This match is supposed to be the end of that war. Many thought Steamboat would be unable to match the sheer brutality of The Chief, but they were wrong!!! Steamboat and Wahoo tore right into each other, neither giving the other any room to breathe. Wahoo even tossed Steamboat over the top rope trying to hang him with the strap, seemingly more interested in maiming The Dragon than defeating him. Steamboat and Wahoo both bleed, and their backs tore open as they abused each other with the leather strap. Wahoo looked to have the win, but Steamboat was able to reach down inside and find a way to fight back and defeat Wahoo here at Starrcade!!! Both men collapsed on the mat and struggled to get to their feet after this brutal bout. Medical personnel were quickly on the scene tending to both men, Wahoo was able to get to his feet and pushed passed the medics and headed straight for Steamboat, Steamboat saw him coming and quickly prepared to defend himself, but instead of attacking Wahoo simply put out his hand!! Steamboat was leery but took it as Wahoo gave him a brief and gruff handshake before leaving the ring and heading to the back!
Finally we came to the main event, “The Nature Boy” Ric Flair defending the NWA World Title against the man who has seemingly had his number, the Television Champion Tully Blanchard!!!
Flair and Blanchard are slow to hook it up at first, the two men are battle hardened pros and know that the first slip up will likely be the last in this match up. Fundamental wrestling is the order of the day as the two men use their vast knowledge to trade holds back and forth. Neither man is able to truly grab an upper hand in the opening moments. Schiavone says this is pure wrestling at its best. The two continue to trade holds and reversals until Tully slaps the taste out of Flair’s mouth and then all hell breaks loose!! Flair and Blanchard are no longer trying to out wrestle each other, now they are just trying to beat each other’s brains in!!!!Flair gets the upper hand on a chop fest!!! . Flair hits a knee breaker and tries for a cover but only gets two, Flair attempts to hip toss Blanchard, but Blanchard blocks it and after several moments traps Flair in a backslide that only gets a two count. Flair and Blanchard then spend the next five minutes reversing pin attempts both getting several two counts and coming oh so close to taking the win, all the comes to an end when Blanchard catches Flair with the Slingshot Suplex!!! THAT’S GOTTA BE!!!
