CWA at the Mid-South Coliseum 4/14/85: IDOL VS ONE MAN GANG!

1)Bill Dundee pinned Adrian Street (w/ Miss Linda) when he connected with the Bomb’s Away knee drop off the second rope.

2)Sweet Sensation: Stan Lane & Shawn Michaels defeated  Bruise Brothers: Troy Graham & Porkchop Cash at 14:04 when  Lane managed to get Cash’s loaded boot away from him and deck him with it while the referee was tied up with Michaels and Graham. Lane then made the pin and scored a bit of revenge with this victory.

3)”Handsome” Jimmy Valiant fought Big Bubba Rogers (w/ Jimmy Hart) at to a double disqualification 8:45 when they brawled all  over the ringside area and ignored the referee’s instructions.

4)”Wildfire” Tommy Rich pinned ”Ravishing” Rick Rude (w/ Jimmy Hart) at 20:11 with a Lou Thesz Press, after Rude and Hart cracked
heads. Rich sent Rude plummeting into Jimmy Hart, and then finished him off to score a big win. Rude was furious after the match.

INTERMISSION

5)The Nightmares: Danny Davis & Ken Wayne defeated Southern Tag Team Champions Hotstuff International: Eddie Gilbert & Rick Steiner in a Non-Title Match at 15:29 when Danny Davis came off the top rope with a sunset flip on Eddie Gilbert.

6) CWA Heavyweight Champion Jake “The Snake” Roberts pinned Billy Joe Travis at 12:45 when Roberts landed the DDT to Travis. Billy showed a lot of fire, and scored several near falls when Jerry “The King” Lawler came out to ringside to distract The Snake. Jake Roberts eventually regained his focus and scored the pin, but quickly made his exit when Lawler stepped into the ring after the match to stop him from further attacking Travis.

7) Austin Idol defeated Southern Heavyweight Champion One Man Gang by count-out at 19:11 when the champion could not return to the ring. Idol brought the fight to the Gang, and even body-slammed him at one point. The champion also was ferocious, but ultimately missed a splash into the corner. Idol hit the ropes an drilled the Gang with a running clothesline, sending the champion out to the floor. Gang smacked his head on the unpadded floor and could not return to the ring before the ten count. Eventually he stumbled back up and tried to attack Idol, but the Universal Heartthrob landed a running knee to send One Man Gang back out to the floor and back to the dressing room.

That was a strong card from top to bottom. I'm sure they weren't all technical masterpieces, but there really wasn't a popcorn match on the whole card.

Idol is lucky he escaped OMG's wrath, but I'm sure he'll just keep on trying until he learns his lesson.

Idol will have a huge impact in Tennessee. A big upset from Wildfire. Memphis is one of, if not the, best thing going here.

Idol is well on his way. Wow, I wonder how Travis will react to The King coming out. Great win by The Sensation. Wildfire put Rude in his place. I guess Dundee really did show Street.

Man, Idol comes out of MSC smelling like roses tonight. That was as strong as someone could be put over Gang without pinning him cleanly. Bart's comment made me giggle, the eternal babyface dilemma, aye? Billy Joe could spend the rest of 1985 recovering from an injury and he has wrapped up rookie, new-comer, breakout star or whatever PWI award he would be eligible for in 1985, great match from he and Snake.

When tag team wrestling is done at the highest levels it tells a story that rings true to me even moreso than epic one on one encounters. There are levels of drama produced in tag team wrestling that singles matches can't hit, even though the singles match is the truest form of competition. The Nitemares vs. Eddie Gilbert and a green as grass, hulking, brute Rick Steiner would serve as an awesome example of this. As a champion I'm sure you can't help but not take a non-title match as seriously as a title match and the Nitemares were fighting for that one last chance next week. Great match.

Rick Rude and Tommy Rich would be a main event feud in most any territory running on this board, and it's been built marvelously here Justin. Even after a clean finish here I can't wait for the next battle. Great night of action all around.
