THE WORLD WRESTLING FEDERATION PRESENTS
CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING
SATURDAY, APRIL 5, 1985
TAPED APRIL 1 AT THE MID-HUDSON CIVIC CENTER IN POUGHKEEPSIE, NY
VINCE MCMAHON and JESSE “THE BODY” VENTURA are ringside to open the show, and they welcome us to another edition of WWF CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING!
VINCE and JESSE run down the matches that will take place today, including the feature bout, a rematch from WrestleMania, as new Intercontinental champ Don Muraco puts the belt on the line against the man he took the title from, Tito Santana! Jesse says Muraco beat Santana at WrestleMania, and he’ll beat him here today! Vince isn’t so sure, he says that the match at WrestleMania could have gone either way, and he thinks Tito’s chances of regaining the title are very good!
Plus, King Kong Bundy will be in action. The Can-Am Express will be in tag team action. Roddy Piper’s bodyguard Hercules will be in singles action. Johnny V’s duo of Brutus Beefcake and Dino Bravo will be in tag team action. And we’ll see Bugsy McGraw team up with the Soulman, Rocky Johnson, for a tag team match!
Roddy Piper will have King Kong Bundy as the guest on Piper’s Pit, and Bundy has said he will announce his new manager on that segment! We’ll also see footage of the WWF Tag Team title match from WrestleMania!
KING KONG BUNDY beats RON HUTCHINSON. Bundy squashes Hutchinson, putting him after only 90 seconds, with the Avalanche. As the referee counts to 3, Bundy demands the 5-count.
On commentary, Vince and Jesse both put Bundy over as an unstoppable force. Jesse says there’s not a man in the WWF that can beat Bundy, but Vince says that Mean Gene is standing by with someone who Vince thinks might be up for the challenge.
MEAN GENE is backstage in the interview area with ANDRE THE GIANT. Gene welcomes Andre back to the World Wrestling Federation.
ANDRE says he’s happy to be back, and says that he’s heard Big John Studd talk about being the true giant of pro wrestling, and says that if Studd wants that title, he’ll have to go through Andre!
GENE says that’s a showdown that he’s sure the WWF fans would love to see.
VINCE and JESSE talk about the WWF Tag Team title match that took place at WrestleMania, one of FOUR big title matches that took place, and they’ve got some highlights of the Tag title match for the fans.
VTR: Islanders vs Can-Am Express, March 31 at WrestleMania, JIP:
. . . Zenk plays face-in-peril for the next several minutes, taking a horrendous beating, but somehow he keeps kicking out when the champions try to pin him. Zenk is able to break free from the champions to make a tag, but Fuji distracted the referee, and he didn’t see the tag, forcing Lafleur back out, and allowing the champions to continue their assault on Tom Zenk. A minute later, Zenk is FINALLY able to make the hot tag to Lafleur, and he comes in and cleans house.
Lafleur goes to work on Konga, but it’s short-lived, as Konga again takes control with a rake of the eyes. When Konga bounces off the ropes and attempts a clothesline on Lafleur, the Canadian ducks, and Konga nails the referee instead! With the official down, Haku jumps into the ring, and the Islanders double-team Lafleur. Zenk is on the apron, still trying to recover from the beating he sustained, and can’t help his partner. Haku takes Mr. Fuji’s cane and, as Konga holds Lafleur, Haku goes to hit Lafleur with the cane. However, Lafleur moves at the last second, and Haku bashes Konga in the head with the cane instead!
Lafleur dropkicks the stunned Haku out of the ring, and then covers Konga! The referee is groggy, but able to crawl into position, and count the 1, 2, 3 before collapsing to the mat again.
THE CAN-AM EXPRESS HAVE DEFEATED THE ISLANDERS FOR THE WORLD TAG TEAM TITLES!!!
The crowd errupts as Zenk and Lafleur celebrate in the ring with the belts!
VINCE says that the Can-Am Express are a couple of young, athletic wrestlers who the fans have really taken to, and he thinks they’ll make fine tag team champions.
JESSE says that the Can-Ams cheated to win, everyone just saw it, the match should’ve ended once Fuji’s cane was used as a weapon, but instead, the referee let the match continue. He says that Fuji and the Islanders should file a complaint with WWF President Jack Tunney.
VINCE reminds him that it was Fuji and the Islanders who used the cane, not the Can-Am Express, plus the referee didn’t see it being used, so he couldn’t stopped the match.
NON-TITLE MATCH:
THE CAN-AM EXPRESS (Tom Zenk & Phil Lafleur) defeat AJ PETRUZZI & HARLEY DAVIDSON. Petruzzi and Davidson are a tough combo, and they get some offence in early in the match, but the champions end up getting the win when Zenk pins Petruzzi with a sunset flip off of the top rope at 3:39.
HERCULES (w/ Roddy Piper) beats BILLY STARR. Hercules demolishes his opponent, pounding him into the mat, then hoisting him up in the Torture Rack for the submission win at the 2-minute mark.
VINCE notes that the match probably would’ve lasted half the time it did, but Hercules seemed to enjoy inflicting punishment on his opponent. JESSE says that Herc is his kind of wrestler!
VINCE and JESSE send us to GORILLA MONSOON for the WWF UPDATE.
GORILLA is in the control room of a studio, and says that WrestleMania will go down in history as the single greatest wrestling event of all-time! He talks a little about some of the match that took place, before turning his attention to the main event, the WWF World Heavyweight title match!
VTR: Dibiase vs Hogan, from WrestleMania, JIP:
. . . Dibiase keeps working on Hogan’s injured knee, and again goes for the Figure-4. This time, he gets the hold locked on, and Hogan screams in agony. Ali asks Hogan again and again if he wants to give up, but every time, Hogan shakes his head NO. Hogan is able to slowly pull himself closer and closer to the ropes, and finally is able to grab the bottom rope, to force a break. Dibiase relunctantly lets go of the hold, as Hogan staggers to his feet.
Things are looking bleak here for the Hulkster, and Dibiase, sensing that victory is within his grasp, moves in for the kill!
Dibiase hits Hogan with a stiff right hand . . . but the Hulkster shakes it off! Dibiase punches Hogan again, and again, but the Hulkster doesn’t seem to feel it! Hogan shakes his head, and wags his finger in Dibiase’s face, and Ted’s eyes go wide as Hulk hits him with a series of big right hands to the head!
Dibiase tries to hit Hogan again, but the Hulkster blocks it, and stuns the champion with another big right hand that sends Dibiase reeling against the ropes. Hogan grabs him and whips him to the opposite side of the ring . . . and delivers the big boot to the chin as Dibiase rebounds off the ropes! Hogan’s knee is obviously bothering him, as he’s limping slightly, but he ignores the pain, runs the ropes . . . AND DELIVERS THE LEGDROP!!!!!!
The building errupts as Hogan hits the move, then hooks Dibiase’s leg. Muhammad Ali makes the count, as Hogan and all the fans in attendance count along . . . ONE . . . TWO . . . THREE!!!!!!
END VTR
GORILLA says that it was a very impressive win for the Hulkster, and he celebrated with some friends backstage after the show.
Footage is then shown of Hogan celebrating in the locker room with Mr. T, when Andre the Giant walks into the shot, and pours champagne over Hogan’s head before slapping him on the back and congratulating him on his win! Hogan and Andre shake hands as the footage ends.
GORILLA says that Hulk Hogan beat the odds, he went into the match as the underdog, as Dibiase is considered by many experts to be the best technical wrestler in the world today, but Hulk Hogan did it. He pinned Dibiase and is once again the World Heavyweight champion!
GORILLA says that wrestlers are already lining up for a shot at the Hulkster’s title, but Hogan isn’t backing down, he’s signed contracts to meet top contenders all around the Northeast.
VINCE and JESSE talk about what we just saw. Vince congratulates Hogan on the win, while Jesse just shakes his head and says the whole thing makes him sick!
As the next match begins, JOHNNY V joins Vince and Jesse to provide guest commentary for the match. Valiant tells Vince that he’s looking at the DREAM TEAM of professional wrestling!
DINO BRAVO & BRUTUS BEEFCAKE defeat ANDRE LAGO & JOSE LUIS RIVERA. Bravo and Beefcake work well together, a fact that Johnny V constantly reminds us of on commentary, and they get the win at 3:23 when Beefcake pins Lago following the flying kneelift.
MEAN GENE OKERLUND is standing in front of the WWF logo, and he hypes upcoming events. Viewers in the western PA market hear about a show coming up on Friday, April 18 at the Civic Center in Pittsburgh, which will feature Hulk Hogan vs Dino Bravo as the main event!
Fans in New York hear about the WWF’s return to MSG on Monday, April 21. That show will be broadcast on the MSG Network and will feature a huge main event as Roddy Piper challenges Hulk Hogan for the WWF title!
Fans in other markets hear about the return of wrestling to network television with SATURDAY NIGHT’S MAIN EVENT, which will air on NBC on Saturday night, May 10! Matches haven’t been signed yet, but Gene runs down the names of some of the wrestlers that will be a part of the show, including Rocky “Soulman” Johnson, World Women’s champion Wendi Richter and WWF champion Hulk Hogan!
ROCKY “SOULMAN” JOHNSON & BUGSY MCGRAW defeat BOBBY BASS & ROCKY DELLA SERRA. The fans are solidly behind Johnson and McGraw, as they come out and dance to Johnson’s theme music. Once the match starts, though, the Soulman and McGraw are all business! They wear down their opponents, and McGraw gets the win, hitting Bass with a powerslam for the 3-count at 4:03.
After the decision has been announced, Johnson brings a young fan out of the crowd and into the ring to dance with him and McGraw!
VINCE and JESSE send us to “ROWDY” RODDY PIPER, for another edition of PIPER’S PIT.
RODDY PIPER, with his bodyguard HERCULES lurking in the background, welcomes us to another edition of Piper’s Pit! Roddy says that his guest this week is the most sought-after free agent in wrestling, and he asked to come on the show this week so he could announce which manager he’s decided to sign with!
PIPER then introduces KING KONG BUNDY!
PIPER says that he has a great respect for Bundy, and Bundy says he couldn’t think of anywhere else but Piper’s Pit, to make this announcement.
BUNDY then gets down to business, and says that he’s been in negotiations for weeks with the top managers in the WWF, but he’s decided on one, however this man isn’t a manager, but a sports agent . . . FLOYD CREATCHMAN!
CREATCHMAN comes out onto the set, and he shakes hands with Piper, then with Bundy. He tells Bundy that he made the right choice, and that he’ll take him right to the top of the World Wrestling Federation!
BUNDY says his goal is to become WWF champion, and he knows that Creatchman is the best choice to help him achieve that goal.
PIPER takes a moment to run down the current champion, Hulk Hogan, and then Bundy and Creatchman talk about what Bundy will do to each and every wrestler he faces, as the segment comes to an end.
WWF INTERCONTINENTAL CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH:
DON MURACO (Champ) (w/ Mr. Fuji) battles TITO SANTANA to a Double Count-Out. The action is fast and furious in this match, as Santana tries to regain the belt that Muraco won from him at WrestleMania. Santana controls a good portion of the match, and Muraco finally decides he’s had enough, and leaves the ring, heading for the locker room! Santana isn’t about to let the match end like that, and he goes after Muraco, and they brawl in the aisle and then around ringside. Unfortunately for Santana, he forgets about the referee’s count as he pummels Muraco and both men end up getting counted out.
VINCE and JESSE wrap things up, and hype next week’s show, which will feature WWF champion Hulk Hogan and Haku facing off in the main event!
