JESSE and GORILLA talk about our opening match, the Intercontinental title match between champion Tito Santana and challenger Don Muraco.
VTR: Final moments of the Santana vs Muraco match from “the War to Settle the Score” on MTV.
WWF INTERCONTINENTAL TITLE MATCH:
TITO SANTANA (Champion) VS. DON MURACO (w/ Mr. Fuji). There’s no love lost here, after the way the way their last match ended, with Mr. Fuji’s interference causing Santana to be counted out. The champion attacks Muraco as soon as the bell rings, and dominates the early going, battering Muraco from pillar to post. Muraco heads to the floor for a breather and to talk strategy with Mr. Fuji. Santana goes out after him, and chases Muraco around ringside.
Back inside the ring, Santana continues to pummel Muraco, until the Magnificent One stops the champion in his tracks with a low blow. Fuji hands Muraco a foreign object, which Muraco repeatedly jabs into Santana’s forehead, while keeping his back to the referee, so that he can’t see what’s going on. The next few minutes are all Muraco, as he pummels the champion, but he can’t put him away. Muraco sets up for the reverse piledriver, but Santana is able to break free before Muraco can get him into position for the move. Santana then fires off a series of right hands, but Muraco responds by driving a knee into the champion’s midsection, doubling Santana over.
Muraco dominates the next few minutes, but Santana eventually makes a comeback. Santana works Muraco over, and puts him on the mat with a standing dropkick. When Tito runs the ropes, setting Muraco up for the flying forearm, Mr. Fuji trips Santana with his cane! Santana quickly gets to his feet, but turns his attention to Fuji. This proves to be a mistake, as Muraco attacks from behind. Muraco chokes Santana over the middle rope, and when the referee pulls Muraco away, Fuji throws a handful of salt into Santana’s face!
Blinded, Santana is easy pickings for Muraco, and he hits the champion with the reverse Piledriver for the 3-count at the 15-minute mark!
DON MURACO HAS ONCE AGAIN WON THE INTERCONTINENTAL CHAMPIONSHIP!!!
GORILLA and JESSE talk about the match we just saw. Jesse is ecstatic, while Monsoon talks about the miscarriage of justice we just witnessed. Jesse says that Muraco won the title, fair and square, and finally the WWF fans have an IC champion they can be proud of!
ROCKY “SOULMAN” JOHNSON VS. THE DEMON. The popular Rocky Johnson makes short work of his opponent, putting the masked man away with a crossbody from the top rope for the pinfall at 3:46.
MEAN GENE is backstage, at the interview area, with the NEW Intercontinental champion DON MURACO, and his manager MR. FUJI.
MURACO gloats about the win, and says that finally, the IC title belt is back where it belongs!
FUJI says step one of his plan is complete, as the Magnificent Muraco is once again the Intercontinental champion, and when his Islanders defeat the Can-Am Express, he will control two of the three championships in the World Wrestling Federation!
MURACO says that soon it will be all three, since holding the Intercontinental title means he’s the #1 contender to the WWF World title, and he demands a match with whoever wins the WWF title match tonight.
GORILLA and JESSE talk about Muraco’s title win, with Jesse saying Muraco is right, as the IC champion, he becomes the automatic #1 contender to the WWF World title, and asks Gorilla if he can even fathom how great a Dibiase vs Muraco match would be? Gorilla says that Jesse may be getting ahead of himself, it could very well end up being Hogan vs Muraco. Jesse doubts that, and says Dibiase will win the title match tonight.
GORILLA then talks about MANDO GUERRERO, of the Guerrero family, and says that Mando gets the chance to show what he can do in front of the greatest wrestling fans in the world.
JESSE doesn’t think Mando will face any better than his countryman, Chico Santana, did earlier, and predicts a win for the Playboy.
MANDO GUERRERO VS. “PLAYBOY” RIP ROGERS. Rogers takes an early advantage, using some underhanded tactics to gain the upper hand. But it’s short-lived, as Mando turns the tables, and ends up locking Rogers in the Gory Special for the submission victory at 5:40.
GORILLA and JESSE talk about King Kong Bundy, and the path of destruction he has left since arriving in the World Wrestling Federation.
Footage is shown of Bundy squashing several opponents, and then demanding that the referee count to 5. We also see the managers in the WWF all coming out to scout Bundy at different times.
JESSE says that whichever manager Bundy decides to sign with will immediately become the top manager in the WWF, because Bundy is an unstoppable monster!
KING KONG BUNDY VS. BUGSY MCGRAW. The fans give McGraw a loud ovation as he comes out to the ring, slapping hands with the fans, then running around the ring with his arms outstretched, as though he thinks he’s an airplane!
Bundy comes to the ring, and stands in the corner, watching McGraw. As soon as McGraw turns his back, Bundy charges at his opponent, and clubs McGraw over the back with a forearm smash, which puts Bugsy on the mat. Bundy dominates the next few minutes, but McGraw eventually fights back. McGraw battles his way to his feet, and stuns Bundy with a flurry of rights and lefts, then he whips Bundy into the corner. McGraw charges after him, but Bundy moves out of the way, and McGraw crashes into the turnbuckles. Bundy goes back on the offensive, and after a minute or so, he hits the Avalanche for the pinfall at the 6-minute mark. After the 3-count, Bundy demands the ref count to 5, which he quickly does.
MEAN GENE OKERLUND climbs into the ring after the match, and conducts an interview with BUNDY. Bundy gloats about the win, and Gene then talks about the managers that have been coming out to the ring to scout him, and it seems like Mr. Fuji, Johnny V AND Floyd Creatchman are all interested in him, and he wonders if Bundy’s made any decision regarding which, if any, of them he will take on as his manager?
BUNDY says that he’s been in negotiations with all three, and says he’s made a decision, and will announce his manager this coming weekend on Championship Wrestling.
After Bundy leaves the ring, BRUTUS BEEFCAKE and his manager LUSCIOUS JOHNNY V make their way to the ring for the next match. As they wait in the ring, the roof nearly comes off the Garden, as BRUNO SAMMARTINO leads his son, DAVID, to the ring!
Both Sammartinos shake hands with the fans as they make their way to the ring.
BRUTUS BEEFCAKE (w/ Johnny V) VS. DAVID SAMMARTINO (w/ Bruno Sammartino). The two men go tooth and nail for 6 or 7 minutes, before Johnny V gets involved. Valiant trips David Sammartino as he runs the ropes, giving Brutus the chance to take control of the match. However, Bruno Sammartino comes over and grabs Valiant, and drops him to the floor with a big hand, much to the delight of the fans! Bruno continues to wail away on Valiant, and they get the attention of Brutus, who turns his back on David to yell at Bruno. David takes advantage, rolling Brutus up for the 1, 2, 3!!
As David gets his hand raised, Brutus attacks him from behind, then whips David into the ropes, and hits the running kneelift. With David flat on his back on the mat, Brutus jumps out of the ring and brawls with Bruno! Johnny V recovers, and he and Brutus throw Bruno into the ring and start stomping him. Sammartino fights back, though, getting back to his feet, and drops both men with clotheslines! Johnny V rolls out of the ring, but Bruno pulls Beefcake back up to his feet, and hits him with a haymaker that sends Brutus through the ropes and to the floor.
Bruno then helps David to his feet as Johnny V and Brutus Beefcake head for the locker room.
GORILLA and JESSE talk about the WWF Tag Team title match coming up.
Footage is shown, highlighting both the champions the Islanders and the Can-Am Express.
WWF WORLD TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP:
THE ISLANDERS (Champions) (w/ Mr. Fuji) VS. THE CAN-AM EXPRESS (Tom Zenk & Phil Lafleur). The challengers gain the early advantage in this one, using their fast-paced style and plenty of quick tags to keep Konga isolated in their half of the ring. Haku comes in to help out his partner, and that brings Lafleur in as well, and all four men brawl in the ring before referee Dick Kroll can get order restored. While Kroll is busy getting Lafleur out of the ring, Haku and Konga use the opportunity to double-team Zenk, and just like that, the champions have taken control of the match.
Zenk plays face-in-peril for the next several minutes, taking a horrendous beating, but somehow he keeps kicking out when the champions try to pin him. Zenk is able to break free from the champions to make a tag, but Fuji distracted the referee, and he didn’t see the tag, forcing Lafleur back out, and allowing the champions to continue their assault on Tom Zenk. A minute later, Zenk is FINALLY able to make the hot tag to Lafleur, and he comes in and cleans house.
Lafleur goes to work on Konga, but it’s short-lived, as Konga again takes control with a rake of the eyes. When Konga bounces off the ropes and attempts a clothesline on Lafleur, the Canadian ducks, and Konga nails the referee instead! With the official down, Haku jumps into the ring, and the Islanders double-team Lafleur. Zenk is on the apron, still trying to recover from the beating he sustained, and can’t help his partner. Haku takes Mr. Fuji’s cane and, as Konga holds Lafleur, Haku goes to hit Lafleur with the cane. However, Lafleur moves at the last second, and Haku bashes Konga in the head with the cane instead!
Lafleur dropkicks the stunned Haku out of the ring, and then covers Konga! The referee is groggy, but able to crawl into position, and count the 1, 2, 3 before collapsing to the mat again.
THE CAN-AM EXPRESS HAVE DEFEATED THE ISLANDERS FOR THE WORLD TAG TEAM TITLES!!!
The crowd errupts as Zenk and Lafleur celebrate in the ring with the belts.
JESSE and GORILLA talk about what we just witnessed, then send us to pre-recorded comments from several of the wrestlers and NFL players that will take part in the 20-man over the top Battle Royal.
We see quick comments from Big John Studd and Angelo Mosca, who say they will be the final two, and split the winner’s purse. Uncle Elmer and Cousin Luke talk about the match, and each says that if it comes down to the two of them, they will throw the other out to win. Ivan Putski says Polish Power will overcome the odds and he will win the match. Joe Jacoby, the 6’7, 300 lbs. offensive lineman for the Washington Redskins says that he will go through the other 19 guys to win the match, and says that he’s got his eye on Big John Studd, and can’t wait to get his hands on him. The final promo is from the New York Giants’ Lawrence Taylor, who says it’s an honour to be included in this match, and he’ll do everything he can to win it in front of these great New York fans!
20-MAN WWF / NFL INVITATIONAL BATTLE ROYAL
PARTICIPATING IN THE MATCH ARE: BIG JOHN STUDD, ANGELO MOSCA, DINO BRAVO, UNCLE ELMER, COUSIN LUKE, HERCULES, PEDRO MORALES, IVAN PUTSKI, “THE MAD RUSSIAN” ALEXIS SMIRNOFF, BUTCHER VACHON, MOONDOG SPOT, RON STARR, JIMBO COVERT, RANDY WHITE, RUSS FRANCIS, ERNIE HOLMES, JOE JACOBY, LAWRENCE TAYLOR and the special surprise entrant . . . ANDRE THE GIANT!!!
As soon as the bell sounds, all twenty men tear into each other, and Jesse and Gorilla have their hands full trying to call the match, with people fighting all over the place!
The first ones to be eliminated are MOONDOG SPOT and the Dallas Cowboys’ Pro-Bowl defensive tackle RANDY WHITE, as they brawl along the ropes, and both men end up falling over the top and to the floor. ERNIE HOLMES, who finished up his NFL career with the New England Patriots, is the next to go, as Butcher Vachon tosses him over the top rope at the 3-minute mark. From there, RON STARR is eliminated when a clothesline from Hercules sends him over the top and to the floor at 4:30.
Jimbo Covert, the young offensive tackle from the Chicago Bears, eliminates COUSIN LUKE by throwing him over the top at 5:53. After the elimination, Ivan Putski comes over and brawls with Covert along the ropes. A moment later, both COVERT and PUTSKI are pushed over the top by Big John Studd and Angelo Mosca!
ANGELO MOSCA is the next to go, as he picks a fight with Andre the Giant, and that proves to be a big mistake, as the 8th Wonder of the World gets the upper hand and clotheslines Mosca over the top rope at 8:15. Moments later, Hercules tosses BUTCHER VACHON over the top rope.
JOE JACOBY and HERCULES are both eliminated at 9:25 when, as Jacoby tries to push Hercules over, Big John Studd comes up behind him, and shoves Jacoby over, causing both Jacoby and Hercules to fall out of the ring and to the floor.
RUSS FRANCIS is eliminated by Dino Bravo at 10:07. Lawrence Taylor gets his first elimination of the match, as he sends ALEXIS SMIRNOFF over the top after hitting the Mad Russian with a series of big right hands at 10:37.
Big John Studd tosses former WWF champion PEDRO MORALES over the top at 11:46. UNCLE ELMER is the next to go, thrown from the ring by Dino Bravo at 12:30.
BRAVO is then eliminated by Lawrence Taylor at 13:35. TAYLOR is then eliminated when Big John Studd shoves him over the top, with help from Bravo, who pulled on Taylor’s arm from the floor.
That brings us down to the two biggest men in the WWF, BIG JOHN STUDD and ANDRE THE GIANT! After a short brawl, Andre gets the upper hand and is able to shove Big John over the top and to the floor at 15:05.
Andre the Giant gets his hand raised, as the victor of the first WWF / NFL Invitational Battle Royal!
GORILLA and JESSE talk about the next match, the Boxing match between Roddy Piper and TV star Mr. T!
Footage is shown of the confrontations between Piper and Mr. T that have led to this match, including Piper confronting T on the set of the A-Team back in February, and Piper repeatedly insulting T on a recent edition of Piper’s Pit.
Footage is then shown of Mr. T training with Smokin’ Joe Frazier at Frazier’s gym in Philadelphia, while Piper trains with Lou Duva in New Jersey.
BOXING MATCH:
“ROWDY” RODDY PIPER (w/ Lou Duva & Hercules) VS. MR. T (w/ Smokin’ Joe Frazier). The first round starts out slowly, as both men go through a feeling-out process, looking for weaknesses to exploit. Mr. T is the first to really go on the offensive, as he batters Piper with lefts and rights. Piper fights back just as the first round ends.
The second round sees Piper go on the offensive, but as the round nears it’s end, Mr. T once again takes control of the bout, pummeling Piper with stiff rights and lefts, dropping him with a big hook as the round ends. Piper is back to his feet by the count of 6, but he’s wobbly.
During the break between the second and third rounds, Hercules rubs a substance all over Piper’s gloves, but Herc stands in front of Piper, so that the referee can’t see him doing it.
Early in the third round, Piper repeatedly backs T into the corner, but instead of punching him, he moves in close, and repeatedly rubs his glove in T’s face and eyes.
Whatever the substance was that Herc rubbed on Piper’s gloves seems to be doing the trick, as T keeps rubbing his eyes, and swinging wildly, unable to see his opponent. Piper, with a big smirk on his face, moves around the ring, staying just out of reach of T. Piper is so pleased with himself, he turns his attention to Joe Frazier and the audience, taunting them. What he doesn’t realize is, Mr. T soon regains his sight, and grabs Piper’s shoulder, spinning him around, and nailing him with a flurry of rights and lefts that leave Hot Rod stunned.
With about 30 seconds left in the round, Mr. T again drops Piper to the mat, with Hot Rod getting up just in time to beat the count.
When the fourth round starts, and the two men move to the middle of the ring, Mr. T takes a big swing at Piper, who ducks . . . and then locks on the Sleeperhold!
T can’t break free, and soon the lights go out, and Piper drops his opponent to the mat. Piper demands that the referee count Mr. T out, but instead the ref calls for the bell and disqualifies Piper!
Piper doesn’t care, he raises his arms like he won, and celebrates with Hercules in the ring. Joe Frazier checks on T, and is able to revive him. Even Piper’s coach, Lou Duva, looks disgusted with what Piper did, and he joins Frazier in helping T up.
Still groggy, Mr. T charges at Piper, who wisely bails out of the ring, and he and Hercules taunt the men in the ring and the fans before heading to the locker room.
The official decision is announced, that Mr. T wins by disqualification at 1:02 of the 4th round.
GORILLA and JESSE talk about the match we just witnessed. Jesse says the referee was obviously biased against Roddy Piper, everyone saw Piper knock T out, leaving him lying on the mat in the middle of the ring, but the referee refused to count T out. Gorilla says that a Sleeperhold is most certainly NOT legal in a boxing match, and the referee was right to disqualify Piper.
A video airs, highlighting Cyndi Lauper’s involvement in the World Wrestling Federation, the start of what Vince McMahon, doing a voice-over, refers to as the start of the “Rock n’ Wrestling” era in the WWF!
GORILLA and JESSE then talk about the World Women’s title match, coming up next!
WORLD WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP:
LEILANI KAI (Champion) (w/ the Fabulous Moolah) VS. WENDI RICHTER (w/ Cyndi Lauper). Richter and Lauper come out to a HUGE ovation, and then the cheers turn to boos when the Fabulous Moolah leads the Women’s champ to the ring. The action goes back and forth, until Richter catches the champion with a crossbody from the top rope for the 1, 2, 3!
WENDI RICHTER HAS REGAINED THE WORLD WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP!!!
As Richter and Cyndi Lauper celebrate in the ring, they’re joined by MEAN GENE OKERLUND. Mean Gene congratulates Richter on the win.
RICHTER thanks Lauper for being in her corner, to keep an eye on the Fabulous Moolah, and provide moral support. She then thanks her fans for their support, and this title win is for all of them.
LAUPER congratulates Richter on the victory, saying she knew she would beat Kai, and then says that this is the beginning of a long title reign for Richter!
VINCE MCMAHON is backstage, and he’s joined by the new WWF World Tag Team Champions THE CAN-AM EXPRESS. Zenk is carrying the American flag, while Lafleur carries the Canadian flag. Vince congratulates them on winning the titles earlier in the night.
ZENK says that was probably the toughest match he and Lafleur have ever had, but they came out victorious, and realized their dream of becoming Tag Team champions of the world!
LAFLEUR says that, growing up, his goal in life was to join the World Wrestling Federation and win championship gold, and now he’s done that!
VINCE says that there will be plenty of great teams lining up now, looking to dethrone them.
ZENK tells them to bring it on, because they’re ready and they’ll take on all challengers!
GORILLA and JESSE hype the main event coming up next, the one everyone has been waiting for . . . the WWF World title match between champion Ted Dibiase and the former champion Hulk Hogan!
GORILLA then introduces the guest ring announcer for the night, New York Yankees manager BILLY MARTIN! The Yankees’ manager enters the ring, to a HUGE ovation from this New York crowd.
MARTIN then introduces LIBERACE, the guest timekeeper for the match. Once Liberace has taken his seat at the timekeeper’s table, Martin introduces tonight’s special guest referee, former Heavyweight champion of the World MUHAMMAD ALI!!!!
MARTIN then introduces the challenger, HULK HOGAN, and the champion TED DIBIASE.
WWF WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP:
TED DIBIASE (Champion) VS. HULK HOGAN. Before the bell sounds, referee Ali brings both men to the centre of the ring, and goes over the rules. He tells the two to shake hands, and Hogan extends his hand, but Dibiase just turns and walks back to his corner.
Unlike most Hogan opponents, Dibiase doesn’t need to resort to dirty tricks, he’s considered one of the most technically sound wrestlers on the planet. Dibiase uses his technical ability to wear Hogan down in the early minutes of the match, focusing on the right knee of the challenger, possibly looking to soften Hogan up for one of his favourite holds, the Figure-4 Leglock.
Hogan shows that he’s no slouch when it comes to mat wrestling, though we don’t often see it from him. However, that’s not what these fans came to see from the Hulkster, and after showing Dibiase that he’s not afraid to wrestle him on the mat, Hogan gives the fans what they want, as he pummels Dibiase from pillar to post!
Dibiase goes back to the knee, kicking Hogan’s leg out from under him, then goes to apply the Figure-4, but Hogan kicks him off. Hogan makes a comeback, but again, Dibiase goes back to the knee. It’s obvious at this point, as we pass the 10-minute mark, that Hogan’s knee is injured, as he can barely put any weight on it. Dibiase keeps working on the knee, and again goes for the Figure-4 . . . Hogan grabs Dibiase’s head, and rolls him up in a small package!!
Muhammad Ali is quickly into position . . .

DIBIASE GETS A SHOULDER UP!!!
Dibiase is up first, and delivers a vicious kick to the head of the Hulkster, putting Hogan back on the mat. Dibiase backs into the ropes, and then rebounds off, delivering a kneedrop across the throat of the Hulkster, before going back to the knee.
Dibiase keeps working on Hogan’s injured knee, and again goes for the Figure-4. This time, he gets the hold locked on, and Hogan screams in agony. Ali asks Hogan again and again if he wants to give up, but every time, Hogan shakes his head NO. Hogan is able to slowly pull himself closer and closer to the ropes, and finally is able to grab the bottom rope, to force a break. Dibiase relunctantly lets go of the hold, as Hogan staggers to his feet.
Things are looking bleak here for the Hulkster, and Dibiase, sensing that victory is within his grasp, moves in for the kill!
Dibiase hits Hogan with a stiff right hand . . . but the Hulkster shakes it off! Dibiase punches Hogan again, and again, but the Hulkster doesn’t seem to feel it! Hogan shakes his head, and wags his finger in Dibiase’s face, and Ted’s eyes go wide as Hulk hits him with a series of big right hands to the head!
Dibiase tries to hit Hogan again, but the Hulkster blocks it, and stuns the champion with another big right hand that sends Dibiase reeling against the ropes. Hogan grabs him and whips him to the opposite side of the ring . . . and delivers the big boot to the chin as Dibiase rebounds off the ropes! Hogan’s knee is obviously bothering him, as he’s limping slightly, but he ignores the pain, runs the ropes . . . AND DELIVERS THE LEGDROP!!!!!!
The building errupts as Hogan hits the move, then hooks Dibiase’s leg. Muhammad Ali makes the count, as Hogan and all the fans in attendance count along . . . ONE . . . TWO . . . THREE!!!!!!
HULK HOGAN HAS DONE IT, HE’S PINNED TED DIBIASE AND IS ONCE AGAIN THE WORLD WRESTLING FEDERATION CHAMPION!!!!
Muhammad Ali hands Hogan the belt, and he straps it around his waist, and poses for the fans.
Suddenly, RODDY PIPER and HERCULES hit the ring!! Piper jumps Hogan from behind, then pulls the WWF title belt off him, and repeatedly bashes Hogan in the face with it! Hercules then pulls Hogan up, whips him into the ropes, and delivers a powerslam!
With Hogan down on the mat, Piper and Hercules stand over him, gloating. Mr. T arrives on the scene, and grabs a chair before jumping into the ring. T goes after Piper with the chair, but he leaves himself open to a sneak attack from Hercules, who pummels T, and hits him with a powerslam as well!
Piper and Hercules high-five each other, but Hogan has got back to his feet, and he nails Hercules with a series of right hands that send Hercules through the ropes and to the floor.
Hogan, with blood running down his face from being hit repeatedly with the title belt, turns his attention to Hot Rod! Piper wisely bails out of the ring before Hogan can get his hands on him.
Hogan grabs the WWF title belt, and helps Mr. T up, then the two men celebrate and pose in the ring!
GORILLA and JESSE wrap things up, and thank everyone for joining them for the very first WRESTLEMANIA. Ventura reminds everyone to join him, and his co-host, Vince McMahon, on Championship Wrestling next Saturday morning for all the fall-out from tonight’s event!
