Johnny Weaver and Rich Landrum welcome everyone to an empty Spartanburg Memorial Auditorium in Spartanburg, South Carolina for more of “The New Mid-Atlantic Wrestling” - the fastest half-hour in pro wrestling. On tap this week:
THE FALLOUT FROM SPARTANBURG!
According to Johnny Weaver, the facts regarding this situation - we have a new Mid-Atlantic Heavyweight Champion and it is Sam Houston. Jim Crockett Jr. had plans to show footage from the match between Houston and Victor Steamboat here tonight on TV - but the match ended in controversial fashion. Paul Jones has petitioned for the match to be reviewed and while he was in favor of the footage being shown tonight, Sam Houston’s manager The Assassin has successfully secured a court injunction with minutes to go before tonight’s broadcast to block the broadcast of the match and any discussion of how Sam Houston won the championship!
Weaver explains that he desperately wants to tell those outside of Spartanburg more about this situation because there’s much more than meets the eye, but he legally cannot say anything at this stage. Rich Landrum shares that The Assassin is now the ‘Manager of Champions’ here in the Mid-Atlantic because his New Assassins are also the new Mid-Atlantic Tag Team Champions - also under questionable circumstances. We WILL have footage from that match coming up.
But first, let’s take a look at the big debut of Curtis ‘The Big Cat’ Hughes.
1 Fall, 15MTL
’Dangerous’ Doug Gilbert vs. Curtis ‘The Big Cat’ Hughes
Gilbert has promised not to be a stepping stone for the Big Cat in his first professional match here in the Mid-Atlantic. Hughes has mentioned Ron Simmons and the Junkyard Dog as role models, so it’s no surprise to see him using the football spear and big headhunt in his arsenal.
However, Doug Gilbert is no pushover - as the younger brother of ‘Hot Stuff’ Eddie Gilbert and son of Tommy Gilbert, he needs to look no further than his own family for inspiration. Doug manages to take advantage of Hughes’s relative inexperience by dodging a flying shoulder and then working that over with vicious stomps. As Gilbert goes to apply a shoulder-block, Hughes shoves him off. Gilbert is right back, but gets a spear and then an Oklahoma Stampede to win his first match in the area!
Winner: Curtis ‘The Big Cat’ Hughes

Rich Landrum is joined by an irate #1 Paul Jones.
“Rich, I have to tell you, in all my years, I have not seen such highway robbery like what I saw here in Spartanburg tonight. I knew The Assassin would sink low, but I didn’t expect him to sink so low as to…”
Landrum explains they can’t talk about the particulars of the match because of The Assassin’s injunction.
“You’re telling me that not only does this Assassin get to commit a crime in the squared circle, but then he gets to use the letter of the law to make sure we can’t even talk about it? This guy hides his face, I know why now - he’s got no shame. That’s the only reason why he’d take a steel…”
Landrum interrupts again to prevent Paul Jones from going into detail.
“I don’t know how you expect to have an interview with me about the match when I can’t talk about the actual match?! Assassin, Sam Houston, just know this! Your business with Victor Steamboat and Paul Jones is far from over - we’re going to show people the match and they will see Sam Houston is a sham as champion!”
Let’s go to more footage from Spartanburg…
1 Fall, 20MTL
Ranger Ross vs. Iron Sheik
After an encounter last week on TV, these two don’t even really get started as they brawl around the ringside area during the introductions. Tony Rumble once again interjects himself, attacking Ross with his own flagpole once again. Sheik takes advantage by running Ross head-first into one of the steel posts.
Ross is bleeding buckets as Sheik comes off the second rope with a knee drop across the chest. Rumble begins sadistically choking Ross, but as the hero starts to fight back, Sheik batters him with his own flagpole again. Tony Rumble lays out the flag over Ranger Ross’s bloodied body, but then decides to steal it as he leaves with Iron Sheik.
Winner: No Contest

Rich Landrum is joined in the locker-room by Tony Rumble and The Iron Sheik, and Rumble has the bloodied flag tied on like a bandana.
Landrum questions how this has got so personal between Rumble and Ranger Ross so quickly!
“You really wanna know, brother? I’ll tell ya. This cat, Ranger Ross, he ain’t no Army Ranger at all. He’s a damn Draft Dodger! When they were calling ‘em up for ‘Nam, this damn coward went to Canada, he went to Mexico, he went to Kalamazoo to avoid serving his country! Not like me! Not like the Sheik here!”
Iron Sheik steps up to the microphone.
“IRON SHEIK, #1 AAU WRESTLING CHAMPION, ALL THE WAY FROM OLD COUNTRY, TEHRAN IRAN! I BEAT THE MR. BOB BACKLUND IN MADISON SQUARE GARDEN - NOW THIS ROSS THE RANGER? I HEAR, HE DODGE DRAFT! ABSOLUTELY DISGUST ME, MR. RICH LANDRUM! HACK PTOOEY! IRAN #1! USA! HACK PTOOEY!”
Landrum points out that Ranger Ross would have been about 10 years old at the height of the Vietnam war!
“You callin’ me a liar! It don’t matter which war, he’s a damn draft dodger. And he’s yella, baby! So I’ll tell you what we’re gonna do. I kinda like my new Du Rag - it looks good me. I’m gonna walk around the Combat Zone in Boston, looking fly like I always do. Sheik, we’ll take this flagpole, we’ll melt the pole down and turn it into a license plat for your big Caddie, daddy! AHAHAHAHA!”
After Tony Rumble takes off, Rich Landrum reminds fans that Ranger Ross is not a draft dodger - but Rumble can be heard shouting “yes he is!” in the background.

We return right to footage of the closing moments of the Mid-Atlantic Tag Team Title Match from Spartanburg.
1 Fall, 60 MTL
Mid-Atlantic Tag Team Championships
The New Assassins (w/ The Assassin) vs. The Southern Rockers
… Joined in progress…
Rex King and Steve Doll shoot one of the New Assassins off the other side - and they connect with the double dropkick to knock him to the floor. This New Assassin rolls under the ring at the manager’s orders - and suddenly, a New Assassin rolls out on the opposite side of the ring! This New Assassin looks like he’s at least an inch or two shorter, and lanky as opposed to beefy. In the ring, the other New Assassin clobbers King with a double axe handle.
Steve Doll is surprised to see this third (fourth?) Assassin crawling into the ring, but he’s caught and he immediately begs for mercy. As the referee tries to Rex King out of the ring, the Assassin who rolled under the ring slides back in to clobber Steve Doll from behind, then rolls back out! This third, or fourth Assassin, then rolls up Doll for the three count before Rex King can get back in to break the count!
The camera pans to see two the New Assassins celebrating with The Assassin #1 on the floor with the championships - as the lankier Assassin races through the crowd without being spotted by the official!
Talk about Masked Confusion!
Winners: *New* Mid-Atlantic Tag Team Champions The New Assassins
Johnny Weaver and Rich Landrum quickly wrap up and announce the United States Heavyweight Champion Robert Fuller will be here live next week! They are hoping to have developments on the situation with the Mid-Atlantic Heavyweight Championship here next week as well.
