Johnny Weaver and Rich Landrum welcome everyone to the Township Auditorium here in Columbia, South Carolina for the first of, hopefully, many editions of “The New Mid-Atlantic Wrestling” - the most action-packed half-hour in pro wrestling!
The duo are joined by promoter Jim Crocket Jr. to make announcements about the crowning of the new Mid-Atlantic Heavyweight Champion and the new Mid-Atlantic Tag Team champions.
Jim: “We’re very excited to be back in your homes, now every Sunday. We hope to bring you today's superstars and the superstars of tomorrow, just like we did back in the golden years. To start, we’re going to have new Mid-Atlantic Tag Team Champions. We’ve set up a four team tournament, over the next two weeks, we’re going to have the New Assassins battle Ranger Ross and Too Cold Scorpio, plus The Southern Rockers will face the Diamond Mine. Then, on September 3, we will have a special Labor Day Weekend event at the Spartanburg Memorial Auditorium to crown the new champions.”
Weaver asks about the Mid-Atlantic Heavyweight Champion as Crockett brings out the title to present to viewers.
Jim: “As you know, John, this championship sure does mean a lot. Great rasslers like Ric Flair, Chief Wahoo McDaniels, Johnny Valentine, Ricky Steamboat, Roddy Piper, to name only a handful, have held this Mid-Atlantic Heavyweight Championship. I’ve been speaking with the championship committee and we have determined two top contenders. At the Spartanburg Memorial Auditorium on September 3, it’s going to be two great second generation stars, Sam Houston battling Victor Steamboat - and the winner will be the new champion! I’m sure we can all be excited about that match.”
Weaver thanks Jim Crockett Jr. and says he cannot wait to see Houston and Steamboat battle.

THE ASSASSIN joins Rich Landrum with SAM HOUSTON, BRAD ANDERSON and THE NEW ASSASSINS!
“What you see before you is the future Mid-Atlantic Heavyweight Champion, Sam Houston, and a man destined to hold championship gold in the future, Brad Anderson. These two men each come from a fine wrestling heritage and their families have asked me to take a personal hand in managing their careers because I too come from a legendary wrestling family. You will never find out which one, Rich Landrum, because nobody has ever or will ever unmask The Assassin. But, as I promised this man Sam Houston’s brother, my good friend Jake ‘The Snake’ Roberts, I will unlock Sam Houston’s complete potential. I have figured out a secret weapon to guarantee he will become Mid-Atlantic Heavyweight Champion on September 3!”
Landrum is naturally curious about that secret weapon but Sam Houston isn’t interested in sharing any trade secrets.
“You’ll find out when the world finds out, Landrum. If you want to see the secret weapon, you have to spend money, you have to buy a ticket and put money in MY pocket to be in Spartanburg. This won’t be on TV - Sam Houston is bona fide a Superstar! I do NOT wrestle for free. And as for you, Victor Steamboat, I talked to my brother Jake last night on the phone and we laughed and laughed about the time he bounced your brother Ricky Steamboat’s head off the concrete floor with the DDT. I won’t hesitate to do that to YOU, Victor Steamboat, or worse if that’s what it takes to become the Mid-Atlantic Heavyweight Champion… because it’s my destiny to be at the top of the mountain.”
The Assassin has more to say about his new duo of Assassins.
“Take a look at these new hand-picked Assassins. Bigger, stronger, more vicious - and with my mental acuity, nothing will stand in their way from reaching those Mid-Atlantic Tag Team Championships!”

1. THE NEW ASSASSINS (w/ The Assassin #1) vs. RANGER ROSS AND TOO COLD SCORPIO
The new Assassins are two muscle-bound men in full black bodysuits with the Assassins. Thus far, all of The Assassin #1’s bragging and boasting pays off as he runs interference while Assassin #1 whacks Scorpio with Ranger Ross’s flagpole behind the official’s back.
Assassin #2 manages to get the pin while #3 holds back Ranger Ross, but Ross clears the ring after the match. The New Assassins celebrate on the floor, as they advance to Spartanburg.

As we return, a VTR shows ‘BIG CAT’ CURTIS HUGHES on the gridiron at Kansas State. The footage of Hughes running drills alternates with a sit-down interview where Hughes explains why he walked away from a guaranteed NFL contract to become a professional wrestler.
“I loved football my whole life, but I loved wrestling more. I love the physicality of it, I love the idea of living and dying on your own abilities. I look at guys like Junkyard Dog, Thunderbolt Patterson, Rocky Johnson, they’ve been heroes to my people and they showed what one man can do when he stands on his own. That’s a big part of it too. I want to be that kind of role model for a new generation. I want my people to count on The Big Cat.”

TOMMY ANGEL VS. SCOTTY ANTHONY
Anthony gets on everyone’s nerves right away asking referee Stu Schwartz to repeatedly check Tommy Angel’s boots for foreign objects because he doesn’t like the look fo them.
Once the match finally gets going, Anthony decides to take a powder several times by rolling outside and taking full advantage of the count.
However, Angel has finally had enough as he chases Anthony around ringside and forces him back in the ring. Now literally backed into a corner, Anthony ends up battered with strikes from Angel and pinned with a running bulldog.
WINNER: TOMMY ANGEL
TOMMY ANGEL is joined by Rich Landrum at ringside to make his championship ambitions known.
“I have all the respect in the world for Victor Steamboat. I used to respect Sam Houston, I’m not quite sure what’s got into him lately, but I don’t want there to be any secret about the fact that I have my eyes on September 3 in Spartanburg and I believe I should be in contention."

VICTOR STEAMBOAT joins Johnny Weaver and he is accompanied by #1 PAUL JONES.
“Some people may be surprised to see me standing here with this man, Paul Jones, Now, I know he has done some questionable things and I think he’ll be the first to admit he’s not proud of them. But, aside from that, Paul Jones is one of the greatest professional wrestlers ever in the Mid-Atlantic. I’m going into the match of my life and I want to be trained by a man who was one of the greatest challengers ever for both my father, Sam Steamboat, and my brother, Rick Steamboat.”
Paul Jones shakes hands with Victor Steamboat and then shares his own explanation,
“Victor, you are right. I look back and I am not proud of everything I have done, But I am proud of the matches I had against your father and your brother. I say, without question, your brother Ricky Steamboat was my greatest opponent and my greatest tag team partner. And, as I look at you now, and I’ve seen you in training extensively, I believe you have everything it takes to as good as your brother or even better. I believe you are worthy of being Mid-Atlantic Heavyweight Champion - and I will stand in your corner on September 3. It will be an honor to raise your hand in victory, son."
.
.
ART BARR VS. TRENT KNIGHT
Barr isn’t the biggest wrestler in the sport, but any means, but he’s plucky and fast. Knight is bewildered by Barr frequently slipping through his fingers, then catching him with a frankensteiner for the pin!
WINNER: ART BARR
Johnny Weaver: “That’s all for this edition of The New Mid-Atlantic Wrestling! Join us next week for more of the Mid-Atlantic Tag Team Tournament as The Southern Rockers face the Diamond Mind. Plus, we’ll see footage of Sam Houston and Victor Steamboat in training for the Mid-Atlantic Heavyweight Championship match!”
