“Catch Cavalcade Eliminator: Night 2
World Tag Team Champion”
Bremen, Germany
Stadhalle
‘Big’ Otto Wanz once again opened the show by welcoming fans to this summertime spectacular, taking place over this week in Bremen to crown the new EWU World Champions. Wanz announces a press conference will take place formally announcing EWU next week in London where all of the participating countries will be represented and huge stadium card will be announced for the end of summer - to be shown here in Germany on Eurosport and other local channels across Europe and beyond. Because of the varying styles, EWU will have single-fall matches in most cases but will use the round system for special championship contests.
Wanz announces tonight, we will crown the new EWU World Tag Team Champions, tomorrow it will be the eliminator for the EWU World Heavyweight Championship. The big man also shares an update on new World Junior Heavyweight Champion Steven Regal, who was attacked last night by Black Tiger. Regal was hospitalized but doctors believe he will be able to be medically cleared within 30 days. Black Tiger was supposed to take part in tonight’s Tag Team eliminator but he has been thrown out and fined for his actions.
World Tag Team Championship
Brackets: Quarter-Finals
Dave ‘Fit’ Finlay and Giant Haystacks
Pierre Carl Oulette and Steve Blackman
Steve Wright and Marty Jones
Dave Taylor and Norman Smiley
Salman Hashimikov and Victor Zangiev
Cannonball Grizzly and Curtis Thompson
Otto Wanz and Rambo
Klaus Kauroff and Karl Kramer
World Tag Team Eliminator: Quarter Final
The dastardly duo of Dave ‘Fit’ Finlay and technical wrestling icon Giant Haystacks ran the table with the relatively inexperienced duo of Canadian Oulette and American Blackman. Haystacks choked Oulette in the corner, while Finlay punished the French Canadian with a brutal targeted attack on the back of his neck. Finlay ultimately pinned Oulette with a double stomp across the chest off the top rope.
Dave Taylor and Norman Smiley faced stiff competition from the veteran duo of Steve Wright and Marty Jones in the next quarter final match. Wright is an Englishman but has spent most his career in Germany in Austria so he has the fans on his side. Norman Smiley’s unique offense is something new for these Catch audiences and he pins Jones with a spinning DDT.
In a testament to Perestroika, the USSR has sent amateur wrestling legends Salman Hashimikov and Victor Zangiev to compete here - and they have a tough draw with brawny Americans Cannonball Grizzly and Curtis Thompson. Zangiev and Hashimikov are unreal as they manage to topple both big men with an array of suplexes, before Victor pins Grizzly with a bridge out of a butterfly suplex.
The final match of the quarters pitted the popular duo of Otto Wanz and Rambo against the villainous Klaus Kauroff and British brawler Karl Kramer. This one is the exact opposite of the previous match - lots of punches thrown and not much actual wrestling. Wanz gets the pin with a running cannonball into the corner on Kauroff.
World Tag Team Eliminator: Semi Final
Dave ‘Fit’ Finlay and Giant Haystacks have their work cut out for them against Norman Smiley and Dave Taylor. Haystacks ends up getting drop-kicked off the apron and collapses to the floor - rendering him useless for the rest of the match. Taylor then traps an irate Finlay in bridging butterfly suplex for the win.
Otto Wanz and Rambo may have been the fan favorites but they hit a road bump in The Red Bull Army, Salman Hashimikov and Victor Zangiev. This a hard-fought back and forth bought, with both teams scoring near falls several times. Rambo eventually gets trapped in a belly-to-belly suplex from Victor Zangiev, tossed over head and pinned. After the match, Wanz and Rambo shake hands with The Red Bull Army - what a difference a few years makes in pro wrestling!
Interval Matches
Mil Mascaras wrestled Adrian Street to a double count-out when the two brawled all around ringside. This was a return for both men to European rings, but Street was firmly playing up his heel character as he scratched and bit Mascaras while trying unsuccessfully to unmask him. Mascaras managed to throw Street to the floor and dove from the apron down onto him, before they fought back to the dressing room.
Robbie Brookside battled Doc Dean in a fast-paced bout, signifying the varying styles here in the European Wrestling Union. While Otto Wanz and Giant Haystacks represented the super heavyweight spectacle and you have The Red Bull Army as examples of pure grappling, young wrestles like Brookside, Dean, Norman Smiley and World Junior Heavyweight Champion Steven Regal exemplify a quicker and sharper in-ring style. Brookside pins Dean here with a flying leg drop off the top rope.
World Tag Team Eliminator: Final
Salman Hashimikov and Victor Zangiev won the eliminator tournament to become the new World Tag Team Champions following a world-class bout with Dave Taylor and Norman Smiley. The duo and Taylor and Smiley took a few shortcuts, and they came close at times to putting away The Red Bull Army, but as the suplexes from Hashimikov and Zangiev piled up, Taylor and Smiley got shakier. When Smiley went for a cross-body off the rope, Hashimikov caught him, propelled him backwards and dropped him on his head to get the three count!
Following the match, EWU representatives Otto Wanz, Lord Alfred Hayes and Orig Williams present Hashimikov and Zangiev with the tag team championships. They raise the arms of the new champions - and shake their hands. A much more respectful ending than last night
signals a sport partnership that goes beyond borders.
