“UNIVERSAL CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING”
Broadcast on Friday, June 14, 1985 on:
Announcers: Gordon Solie and Bobby Heenan
Backstage interviews: Ken Resnick
Ring Announcer: Larry Nelson
Referees: Tommy Young, Jack Lotz and “Dangerous” Danny Davis
GORDON SOLIE and BOBBY “THE BRAIN” HEENAN are seated at a desk in a studio.
Solie and Heenan open the show, and welcome us to “Universal Championship Wrestling”!
Tonight, we’ll see a 6-man tag team match, as Jimmy Garvin, Gino Hernandez and Rick Rude take on the popular trio of Jay Youngblood, Mr. Olympia and newcomer Mike Rotundo! Heenan puts Rude, Garvin and Hernandez over as quite possibly the greatest trio of wrestlers ever assembled! Solie says they are certainly a formidable group, and Youngblood, Olympia and Rotundo are going to have their work cut out for them tonight!
Garfield Portz has been granted a rematch with Brad Armstrong for the American title after their match a few weeks back went to a draw. Heenan says that it’s SIR Garfield Portz, and Solie better show him the respect that someone of his stature and position deserves! Heenan says that the promoters short-changed Sir Garfield the last time, giving him a match with only a few minutes of TV time remaining.
We’ll also see the impressive rookie Sting in action in a special handicap match! Heenan says that all he’s been hearing about since UCW opened is Sting this and Sting that! He says that, sure the guy is big and strong, and the humanoids seem to like him, but he lacks the killer instinct that’s required to really make an impact in this sport. Solie says that when Heenan says “killer instinct”, he means a willingness to cheat. Heenan says Solie can call it what he wants, but he’s managed World champions and he knows what he’s talking about.
And, our feature bout tonight . . . a match that has sold out arenas in areas like the Carolinas, Virginia, Florida, Texas and the Midwest over the years . . . Wahoo McDaniel meets former World’s champion Harley Race! Heenan mocks Wahoo, saying he couldn’t beat Paul Orndorff, and now he thinks he stands a chance with the 7-time World’s champion? He says Wahoo is in for a long night!
HANDICAP MATCH:
Taped in Hagerstown, MD:
STING defeats THE MASKED TERRORISTS. The two masked men jump Sting to start, and give him a beating, until the referee forces one of them out of the ring. On commentary, Gordon reminds us that the team with two wrestlers must wrestle the match like a tag team match, they must tag in and out. The masked Terrorists don’t seem too interested in doing that, as they constantly double-team Sting. However, the popular youngster battles back, and soon has the upper hand! Sting whips one of the masked men into the corner, then charges in after him, hitting a splash. The man drops to the mat, and rolls out of the ring, leaving his partner to face the rookie, one on one. Sting bounces off the ropes and drops the other masked man with a diving shoulder tackle. From there, Sting locks on the Scorpion Lock and gets the win by submission.
Taped in Hagerstown, MD:
JIMMY GARVIN & “RAVISHING” RICK RUDE & “GORGEOUS” GINO HERNANDEZ (w/ Precious) defeat JAY YOUNGBLOOD & MR. OLYMPIA & MIKE ROTUNDO. Gordon and Bobby talk about the fact that this is Mike Rotundo’s first match in Universal Championship Wrestling. Unfortunately for Rotundo, it’s not a successful debut, as he, Youngblood and Olympia fall in defeat to the heel trio. The action is fast and furious for almost 15 minutes, and the two teams seem evenly matched for the most part. However, Precious makes the difference, as she distracts Youngblood, tripping him as he runs the ropes. When Youngblood turns his attention to Precious, Rick Rude takes advantage, attacking Jay from behind, before dropping him with the Rude Awakening Neckbreaker!
Afterwards, Olympia and Rotundo try to explain to the referee that Precious interfered, but he didn’t see it so there’s nothing he can do, so they turn their attention to their fallen partner, helping Youngblood to his feet.
Back in the studio, Solie and Heenan talk about the ongoing Television tag team title tournament.
We see short clips of the three matches that took place last Sunday on “Capitol Wrestling”, where Jay Youngblood & Mr. Olympia defeat the Cuban Assassins, Steve Williams & Jim Neidhart beat Koko Ware & Iceman Parsons, and the Fantastics went to a draw with the Guerreros.
Heenan predicts Williams and Neidhart will win the tournament, he says they’re just too mean and too powerful for the other teams to beat.
Solie says that at this point, it’s wide open and any of the six teams could walk away with the belts when it’s all over.
Then we see a graphic showing the standings:
Television tag team title tournament standings:
Jim Neidhart & Steve Williams - 2 points
Jay Youngblood & Mr. Olympia - 2 points
Hector & Chavo Guerrero - 1 point
The Fantastics - 1 point
Koko Ware & Iceman Parsons - 0 points
The Cuban Assassins - 0 points
Solie says that next week, right here on Universal Championship Wrestling, we’ll see three more tournament matches . . . the Guerreros face Jim Neidhart and Steve Williams, The Fantastics square off with Jay Youngblood and Mr. Olympia, and Iceman Parsons and Koko Ware meet the Cuban Assassins!
Solie and Heenan then talk about a man on his way to UCW . . . Greg “the Hammer” Valentine!
We see a short highlight video of Valentine, including clips of his win over Dick Murdoch in New Orleans on Christmas night, and beating Mil Mascaras for the IWA World title.
AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH:
Taped in Queens, NY:
BRAD ARMSTRONG (champion) defeats GARFIELD PORTZ. Two weeks ago, these two went to a draw on “Capitol Wrestling”, but this week they have plenty of time. Things are pretty even in the early going, though Portz uses some underhanded tactics to gain an advantage. Armstrong battles back, and eventually gets the win after hitting a swinging neckbreaker for the pinfall victory.
Taped in Queens, NY:
WAHOO MCDANIEL battles HARLEY RACE to a DOUBLE COUNT-OUT. This is a stiff, hard-hitting encounter, as both men seem more interested in beating the hell out of each other than going for a pinfall or submission. Wahoo unloads with some vicious chops that leave Harley’s chest bright red. Wahoo backs Race into a corner, and delivers another brutal chop. Race stumbles out of the corner . . . and falls flat on his face on the mat! Wahoo quickly covers him, but Race is able to get a shoulder up at the last second!
As the match continues, Race battles back, and catches Wahoo with a couple of big rights that leave the Chief stunned. Race then clips Wahoo’s knee, and goes to work, looking to soften him up for the Indian deathlock.
A few minutes later, the fight spills out of the ring and to the floor. On the outside, Race goes to ram Wahoo’s head into the ringpost, but McDaniel blocks it, and sends Harley into the post instead! At this point Paul Orndorff rushes down to the ring, and attacks Wahoo from behind!
Orndorff knocks Wahoo to the floor, then Race joins him as they put the boots to Wahoo!
The crowd errupts as Rocky Johnson charges down to the ring, and catches Race and Orndorff with a flurry of rights and lefts, and the two heels take off towards the back. Rocky checks on Wahoo as we go back to Heenan and Solie in the studio.
In the studio, Solie and Heenan wrap things up and hype next week’s show, which will feature three matches from the Television tag team title tournament.
