Gene Okerlund: Welcome to another edition of Superstars of the Ring. We have a great show for you, as tonight as the monster Big Van Vader will be in action, the Sheepherders will face the team of Tracy Smothers and Tommy Rich, Adrian Adonis faces Ronnie Garvin, and in tonight’s main event, we will show you a replay of the Television Title match from last weekend’s Countdown to Greatness between Nikita Koloff and Lex Lugar.
The wrestling world is still buzzing over the amazing action last Sunday night at Countdown to Greatness. We will hear from many of the participants tonight and over the next few weeks. Right now though, I am honored to be joined by the new UWE Heavyweight Champion of the world. Magnum TA defeated long-time champion Roddy Piper at the Forum in LA to win the heavyweight title. As expected, the match was a brutal affair that saw Magnum win the title when Piper was unable to answer the 10 count from the referee. Here to talk about that match is the champ, Magnum TA.
Magnum TA: We did it! Piper’s reign is over. None of this would have been possible without your support, your encouragement, your cheers. When Piper and I were both down, beat tired from an exhausting match, it was your support that gave me that energy I needed to get back to my feet before the referee counted to 10. I owe all of you fans for that victory and winning the most prestigious title in all of wrestling. The way I’m going to repay you is by defending this belt with honor, by being a champion you can finally be proud of. I want the entire UWE to be put on notice: I worked too hard to get this belt, I’m not giving it up anytime soon. That match with Piper, that’s the kind of match that takes years off a career. It was an all out war. A war that I won. Piper, anyone else who wants this belt, bring the best you got, brother, because it’s going to take world war three to take this title from my waist.
Gene Okerlund: Magnum TA credits the fans for his big win at Countdown to Greatness where he walked out with the heavyweight title. Let’s head to the ring for our first match of the evening. Rod Trongaard and Dutch Savage are on the call.
Match #1
Big Van Vader defeated Frankie Williams via pinfall.
Gene Okerlund: Another impressive win by the monster Big Van Vader. Before we got to our first break, we are joined by the Commissioner of the UWE, Lord James Blears, who has a few major announcements.
Lord James Blears: Countdown to Greatness was a smashing success and an example of the great wrestling action we continue to bring to the fans. The question now becomes, what’s next? Last Summer we promoted a series of cards around the country billed as the Festival of Champions. This year, we plan to do it again, and make it even bigger! There will be four Festival of Champions cards this Summer featuring blockbuster wrestling action at each one. The four festival locations will be Portland, Oregon on June 2; Chicago, Illinois on July 7; Denver, Colorado on August 4 and San Francisco, California on September 1.
I have one more major announcement to make at this time. The UWE Competition Committee has announced that the promotion will host an annual tag-team title tournament, with the winning team earning an unheard of prize for a wrestling event: one million dollars! That’s right, the winning team gets 1 million dollars! We have some of the best tag team wrestling in the world right here in the UWE and I know with this prize money, even more great teams are going to make their way to the promotion. The tournament is being sponsored by DARE, the anti-drug program, and the beautiful trophy will be known as the DARE Tag-Team Cup. The tournament will take place on July 7th in Chicago, Illinois. We’ll start announcing teams for the tournament in the next few weeks.
---Commercial Break---
Gene Okerlund: In our last segment, we heard huge news from UWE Commissioner Lord James Blears. The Festival of Champions has returned with blockbuster cards all over the country this Summer, including DARE Tag-Team Cup with a prize of one million dollars! Our next guests will surely have many exciting matches as part of the Festival and will undoubtedly be competing for that million dollars. Last weekend at Countdown to Greatness, they came up short in their quest to win the belts from the Rock and Roll Express, and then took out their frustrations with a sneak attack on the champs. Here to explain themselves are the Bulldogs.
Bret Hart: We don’t have to explain nothing, Okerlund. We did what we had to do. We fought within the rules and it got us nowhere. Now it’s time to fight like we’re used to. No more caring about the fans, no more giving a damn what people think of us. Now we fight for each other. Piper had it right when he said the fans were just weighing him down. That’s what happened to us and we’ve shed that dead weight.
Davey Boy Smith: We’re free from worrying about what anyone thinks of us. We didn’t win the tag-team titles at Countdown to Greatness. It’s the last time we come up short. We demand an immediate rematch with the Rock and Roll Express. This time, the results will be very different. What happened to the Express after the match, when we left them lying in the middle of the ring, that’s just a preview of what we have in-store for them. And for this tag-team title tournament, go ahead and deposit that million dollars right in our back account, because they isn’t anyone in the UWE who can stand in our way.
Gene Okerlund: There must be something in the water as the Bulldogs have now joined Roddy Piper in betraying the fans. We’ll see if the UWE Competition Committee gives them the rematch they are demanding. Let’s head to the ring for our next match of the evening.
Match #2
Tommy Rich and Tracy Smothers defeated the Sheepherders by DQ following interference from Jonathan Boyd.
---Commercial Break---
Gene Okerlund: For over a year, our next guest held the world heavyweight championship. This will be his first interview in a long time without that title. Joining us now is the former heavyweight champion of the world, Roddy Piper.
Roddy Piper: You sure like saying “former”, don’t you Gene?! I know you’ve been rooting against me, plotting against me. The entire UWE wanted to get that title from around my waist. That’s why they got a crooked referee who didn’t know how to count to 10. I was on my way to my feet when the referee counted to 10, when it hadn’t even been 10 seconds, jack. I’m not one to make excuses, I’m one to get revenge. Revenge on all those people who conspired to take away what is rightfully mine. You think you’re rid of Roddy Piper, you are very, very wrong. I know you’re here in the building James Blears, I know you want to protect your new champion. But my lawyers tell me that the contract we signed for Countdown to Greatness had a rematch clause. Set the match now. Because this time, I don’t care how many crooked referees you put into the ring, it won’t stop me from taking back my world heavyweight championship.
Gene Okerlund: Roddy Piper wants another shot at Magnum TA. We’ll find out next week whether he’ll get his wish. Let’s head to the ring as Adrian Adonis is in action against Ronnie Garvin.
Match #3
Adrian Adonis defeated Ronnie Garvin via pinfall.
---Commercial Break---
Gene Okerlund: In our last segment on tonight’s show, we’re going to show you a video replay of the big match at Countdown to Greatness where UWE Television Champion Nikita Koloff faced the impressive Lex Lugar. After the replay, we’ll hear from the Russian Nightmare himself. Let’s go to the replay.
Match #4 – Video Replay
UWE Television Champion Nikita Koloff defeats Lex Lugar via pinfall.
Gene Okerlund: What an impressive win for Nikita Koloff. The champ is joining us now to talk more about the match.
Nikita Koloff: What more is there to talk about? That loud-mouth American Lex Lugar thought he could take on the mighty Russian empire. He was sorely mistaken. What I did to Lugar is a lesson that every single person in UWE needs to remember. I cannot be beat. With the elite trainings provided by the Soviet Union, with the intelligence provided by the KGB, with the determination to conquer this area for Mother Russia, there is no one who can stop this invasion. The Festival of Champions will be nothing more than the Festival of Pain, brought to you courtesy of the Soviet Union’s most elite athlete.
Gene Okerlund: The Russian Nightmare is ready for his next challenger. We’ll hear from Lex Lugar on our program next week and we’ll see the Television Champion himself defending his belt against Jimmy Snuka. Till next week wrestling fans.
