Superstars of the Ring
San Diego, CA
Taped: Tuesday, April 16, 1985
Airing: Friday, April 19, 1985, ESPN
Interviewer: Gene Okerlund
Announcers: Rod Trongard and Dutch Savage
Referee: Joey Marella
Ring Announcer: Joe Blanchard
Gene Okerlund: Welcome to another edition of Superstars of the Ring. We have an a great show for you, as tonight you will see Tony Atlas in action, Jake Roberts meets Sweet Brown Sugar, Big John Studd will take on Ronnie Garvin, and in our huge event, UWE World Heavyweight Champion Roddy Piper defends his title against the popular Tracy Smothers.
We are just weeks away from the big Countdown to Greatness card on May 5th at the Forum in Los Angeles. If you can’t make it in person, closed circuit locations will be available around the nation. Already booked for this huge show are former friends Roddy Piper and Magnum TA meet for the first time, the World Tag-Team Champions Rock and Roll Express will defend their belts against the Bulldogs, and new UWE Television Champion Nikita Koloff will take on Lex Lugar.
Tonight, I can announce even more matches for this blockbuster night of wrestling. At Countdown to Greatness, the outlaw Ron Bass will battle Superfly Jimmy Snuka, Junkyard Dog will try and take down the monster known as Big John Studd, and in a battle of former television champions, Tito Santana takes on Adrian Adonis. What a night of wrestling and even more matches will be added in the next few weeks.
Our first guest is scheduled to face Lex Lugar at Countdown to Greatness. He will now enter that match with the UWE Television Championship around his waist. Please welcome the Russian Nightmare, Nikita Koloff.
Nikita Koloff: What I tell you lazy Americans. I said you weak, that you are nothing compared to mother Russia. I said I will take whatever I want from this wasteland and take it back to the USSR. You saw last weekend, that is exactly what I will do. I destroyed that little peasant named Tito Santana, took the belt home to show our new leader Mikhail Gorbachev and the KGB. I got my next orders. Before I take the world heavyweight champion, I am going to run this man Lex Lugar out of wrestling. He stands for all that the world hates about America. He pretends to be big and strong, runs his mouth, shows up where he’s not wanted. I will do the rest of the world a favor and destroy you, for Mother Russia, for everyone that hates you ignorant Americans.
Gene Okerlund: Comrade Koloff has some mighty harsh words for his opponent at the Countdown to Greatness, Lex Lugar. Lugar will be with us next week to respond, and I’m sure that won’t be pretty. Let’s head to the ring for our first match of the evening as Tony Atlas is in action. Rod Trongard and Dutch Mantell are on the call.
Match #1
Tony Atlas defeats Enrique Vera via pinfall.
---Commercial Break---
Gene Okerlund: We continue to strive to sign the best wrestlers in the world, so you see the best competition each and every week in the arenas and on your television screen. I am pleased to welcome now one of the newest members of the UWE, a man who has had success all over the world, please welcome Rick Martel.
Rick Martel: Thank you for the welcome Gene. It’s great to be here in the UWE where the best wrestlers in the world compete. I’ve had a chance to fight against some of the best business, in the United States, in Canada, in Europe. I’ve won some and lost some, but every single time I stepped in the ring I fought as hard as I could for the fans who pay their hard earned money to see us compete. I’ve been successful every where I’ve been, yet there’s something that keeps eating away at me, a feeling about one man I can’t shake. That man is Jake Roberts. Roberts and I have a history, we have unsettled business. We have a past that cannot be forgotten. It’s time for me to end this thing with Jake Roberts once and for all. I know Jake Roberts has been running wild around this promotion for the past year. I am here to stomp out the Snake once and for all.
Gene Okerlund: Rick Martel has arrived in the UWE and is immediately challenging Jake Roberts to a match as these two apparently have quite a bit of bad blood. We’ll see Martel in action on next week’s program. Let’s head to the ring as the man who was the center of his ire is in action.
Match #2
Jake Roberts defeats Sweet Brown Sugar via pinfall then drapes his trusty snake Damien over his fallen opponent.
---Commercial Break---
Gene Okerlund: Jake Roberts looked in his match against Sweet Brown Sugar and one wonders if Rick Martell made a wise decision immediately challenging the Snake. Our next guest has a big match at Countdown to Greatness as he will face Tito Santana in hopes of getting back into the title picture.
Adrian Adonis: Shut your mouth Gene and quit talking about me getting back in the title picture. I never left the title picture. Every single person wearing a gold strap around their waists knows that they need to watch out of the man from New York City. See, I fight different than you palm tree hugging people out here are used to. I fight to win. And now that I’ve shed that dead weight of a manager Freddie Blassie, I’m free to do things my own way, the way we do it on the streets of NYC. Tito Santana is going to learn what happens to people like him when they come into my neighborhood. They get beaten, and we let them go home if they’re lucky. Santana, you won’t be so lucky.
Gene Okerlund: Adrian Adonis is showing a newfound attitude now that he has parted ways with his manager Freddie Blassie. Let’s see how well this helps him at Countdown to Greatness when he faces Tito Santana. We have an exciting match for you next, as Big John Studd takes on Rugged Ronnie Garvin.
Match #3
Big John Studd defeated Ronnie Garvin via pinfall.
---Commercial Break---
Gene Okerlund: We have a treat for you in our main event as UWE World Champion Roddy Piper will defend his title on this program against Tracy Smothers. Before we get to that match, though, we are joined by Piper’s opponent at Countdown to Greatness, Magnum TA.
Magnum TA: Thank you Gene and as always, a special thank you to the most amazing fans in professional wrestling. We’re getting closer and closer to Countdown to Greatness. Closer and closer for my chance to step in the ring with the man who betrayed me, who betrayed the fans who cheered him for years. Piper thinks he can win by taking the easy road, by taking shortcuts. I’ve never wrestled that way and I’m sure not going to start now. There has to be a punishment for betrayal, there has to be a punishment for what you’ve Piper. That punishment will be when I beat you in the middle of the ring at Countdown to Greatness and take your precious world title. You’ve held that belt for almost a year. Your time is up. For those same fans you stabbed in the bag, I will proudly hold up the world title for them.
Gene Okerlund: Magnum is laser-focused on his match with Roddy Piper on May 5 for the world heavyweight title. We’ll see if Piper is still holding that belt as he has a tough title match against Tracy Smothers in our main event.
Match #4
UWE Heavyweight Champion Roddy Piper defeated Tracy Smothers via pinfall as a result of the use of a foreign object. With Rich down, Piper assaulted until Magnum TA ran to ringside and attacked the world champ. The two had a heated brawl before security intervened.
Gene Okerlund: It’s hard to believe these two were ever friends! They are going to tear the roof off the Forum on May 5. We’re out of time this evening. Join us next week as the Rock and Roll Express will defend their belts against One Man Gang and Nord the Barbarian, we’ll see Rick Martel in action, and many more great matches. Till next week wrestling fans.
