A pyrotechnic display opens the show as the camera spans the live arena crowd. The shot then cuts to Gene Okerlund in an interview area near the ring.
Gene Okerlund: Welcome to history, wrestling fans! Welcome to Prime Time Classic. Tonight is the UWE’s first live television broadcast in conjunction with our great partners at ESPN. We have five exciting matches for you this evening. I am proud to announce that if the card runs longer then two-hours, ESPN executives have authorized us to stay on the air until the matches are complete!
Before we go the ring for our first match of the night, I want to welcome a newcomer to the Universal Wrestling Enterprise, a man with one of the most intimidating physiques in all of wrestling, a man who was wanted by every wrestling promotion in the world and chose to sign with the UWE. Please welcome the herculean figure known as Lex Lugar!
Lex Lugar: Thank you for that welcome Mean Gene and thank you to all the fans here in Portland and those watching on ESPN. This is the truth, I could have signed on the dotted line anywhere. Promotions were throwing money at me, throwing cars, you name it, they were willing to give to me. In my mind, there was no choice. The UWE has the best competition, the best fans, the highest caliber of wrestling. Another thing brought me here: this Russian loud-mouth Nikita Koloff. I heard him putting down the USA, I heard him talking about Russians being superior to Americans. I grew up loving this country and everything it means to be American. You put down the USA, you put down me and my family. Koloff, be warned, you think Russians are superior to Americans, you are going to have to go through me to prove it.
Gene Okerlund: Lex Lugar is wasting no time issuing a challenge to Nikita Koloff! I’m sure the big Russian will have something to say about Lugar’s comments. Tonight though, he has a tough battle against Ronny Garvin. Let’s head to the ring for our first match of the evening. Rod Trongard and Dutch Savage are on the call.
Match #1: UWE Television Champion Tito Santana defeats Big Van Vader via disqualification when the rest of Gary Hart’s stable (One Man Gang, Nord the Barbarian) make their way to the ring and attack Santana. Security eventually has to restore order.
Match #2: Jimmy Snuka defeats Ron Bass via pinfall following a superfly splash.
Match #3: Nikita Koloff defeated Ronnie Garvin via pinfall following a Russian sickle. After the match, Koloff took to the mic to disparage the United States and admonish how weak Americans are. During his rant, Lex Lugar made his way to ringside and confronted Koloff. As an all-out brawl was about the commence, UWE personnel stepped in to separate the parties.
Match #4: Tag-team elimination match: winning tag-team gets a shot at UWE Tag-Team Champions the Rock and Roll Express.
Lord James Blears comes to ringside and goes over the rules. All four teams will be in the ring at the same time. Once a wrestler is pinned or submits, his team is eliminated from the tournament. The winning team will face the Rock and Roll Express for the world title in a match to be shown on Superstars of the Ring next Friday night. The teams make their way to the ring: The Wild Samoans w/ Captain Lou Albano, the Sheepherders w/ Lord Jonathan Boyd, Tommy Rich and Tracy Smothers, and the Bulldogs (Bret Hart and Davey Boy Smith).
As to be expected with this group of wrestlers, it’s mayhem from the opening bell. There’s fighting in the ring, out of the ring, alliances between heels and faces. There are two refs assigned to the match, but that’s not enough. With both refs looking elsewhere, Captain Lou Albano strikes Tracy Smothers with a foreign object. Wild Samoan Afa quickly pins Smothers before Wildfire can make the save. Tommy Rich and Tracy Smothers are eliminated. The Bulldogs are now in some major trouble, as the heel teams decide to work together to take on Hart and Smith. With the Sheeps working on Hart, the Wild Samoans are giving the business to Davey Boy. Bret Hart is able to move out of the way of a Butch Miller forearm, which sends Luke Williams flying to the floor. Hart then quickly rolls up a surprised Miller for the pin. The Sheepherders have been eliminated. The Bulldogs have evened things up but they are still in a bad way, as they are suffering the results of the brutal beating they took earlier. The Wild Samoans looks have things under control. Davey Boy Smith is trapped in a submission hold and it appears he may submit. He uses his amazing strength to somehow break out of the hold. He throws Afa against Captain Lou incapacitating both men. Hart executes a piledriver on Sika and go for the pin. The Bulldogs have won the match!
As they are celebrating in the ring, the Rock and Roll Express come to ringside and congratulate the Bulldogs, letting them know how much they look forward to their match next week.
Match #5: UWE Heavyweight Champion Roddy Piper and Magnum TA defeat Big John Studd and Jake Roberts in a tough contest when TA pins Studd. This was a wild encounter that saw action all over the ring. At one point, as Magnum and Roberts were fighting at ringside, Studd trapped an exhausted Piper in a bear hug. Overzealousness by Roberts caused him to mis-time an attack on Magnum, sending him headfirst into the ring post. Magnum then jumped into the ring and reached out to tag Piper, who was wailing his arms from the bear hug. As the legal man, Magnum jumped into the ring and landed forearms to Studd’s head. The big man dropped Piper, Magnum then landed a diving knee drop and quickly covered for the pin. Magnum and Piper win the match!
As the heels make their way to the back, Magnum is celebrating inside the ring as Piper is gaining his bearings. Piper then comes up to Magnum. TA extends his hand to celebrate the victory. Piper reaches out and shakes his hand…..then kicks TA in the gut. He kicks him again. And again. With Magnum down, Piper drops and elbow on him. He then kicks him one last time as he starts to make his way to the back. The camera cuts to Okerlund.
Gene Okerlund: What on Earth is going on here?! We need medical attention in the ring. Piper has lost mind. The champ has turned on his friend. We’ll get to the bottom of this wrestling fans and have a full report for you next week. I can’t believe this amazing night of wrestling, the first live-card on ESPN, ended with such betrayal. We’ll see you next week wrestling fans.
