Solie and Reynolds welcome us to this week’s episode of “SUNDAY NIGHT SHOWDOWN”!
We’ve got a big main event tonight, as Rocky Johnson and Austin Idol team up to face Bobby Heenan’s new team of Gino Hernandez and Rick Rude!
Let’s take a look back to last week, and what led to Rocky asking for this match tonight.
VTR: Last Week on Sunday Night Showdown:
Suddenly, Bobby “the Brain” Heenan makes his way out!
Heenan shakes hands with both Gino and Rude. When Solie asks him what business he has out here, Heenan tells him to mind his own business, then turns his attention to Rude and Gino. He says that he’s looking to expand his Family, and with him in their corner, the NAWF wouldn’t be able to refuse them a shot, he’d get his legal team on them, and Rude and Hernandez would be wearing those belts in no time!
Rude and Hernandez continue to talk terms with Heenan, then they both shake Heenan’s hand again, all three men wearing big smiles.
While this is going on, Rocky Johnson is making his way out to the ring for the main event.
Heenan whispers something to Rude and Hernandez . . . AND THEY CHARGE ROCKY, JUMPING HIM FROM BEHIND!!!!!
Rude and Gino give the Soulman a beating before NAWF officials and security personnel rush out to separate them.
Rocky is in bad shape as he stumbles towards the ring for the main event.
END VTR
After that sneak attack by Rude and Hernandez last week, Rocky went to the NAWF promoters and asked for a match against them. Austin Idol, who’s had his fair share of problems with the Heenan Family, volunteered to be his partner, and that match will happen on tonight’s program!
BARRY WINDHAM beats THE MASKED RUSSIAN DESTROYER. Windham has his hands full with the massive Russian Destroyer, but in the end, he gets the win after hitting a diving clothesline from the top rope.
Solie and Reynolds are then joined at the announce area by Barry Windham. Solie says that Windham had plenty of success here in Florida early in his career, and he’s happy to see Barry back, as he’s sure the Florida fans are as well.
Windham says he’s happy to be back, as Gordon said, this is where it all began for him. He says that the best wrestling fans in the world are right here in Florida!
Reynolds says that, since they have Windham out here with them, they have an announcement that concerns him. Reynolds says that right here next week on Sunday Night Showdown, there will be a 10-man Battle Royal, and the final two participants will then meet in a one on one match the following week, with the winner being crowned the first NAWF Florida Television champion!
Reynolds says that Windham will be one of the 10 participants, along with these other 9 wrestlers:
Brad Armstrong
Dutch Mantell
Dynamite Kid
El Cubano
Harley Race
Iceman King Parsons
Jimmy Garvin
Koko Ware
Jerry Stubbs
Solie says that there’s some very talented wrestlers in that list, and the fans definitely won’t want to miss that Battle Royal, right here next week on Sunday Night Showdown!
“EL CUBANO” DAVID SIERRA beats JOEL DEATON. Sierra makes his NAWF debut. Right away, he endears himself to the large Cuban-American population in Florida, waving the Cuban flag as he comes to the ring and high-fiving fans. Joel Deaton looks to spoils the Cuban’s debut, and attacks as soon as the bell sounds, but Sierra turns the tables, and quickly locks on a Sleeperhold for the win.
JIMMY GARVIN (w/ Precious) beats STEVE BORDEN. Garvin gets the win over the rookie with a vicious Brainbuster.
Solie and Reynolds are joined by Rocky Johnson and Austin Idol. Rocky says Gino Hernandez and Rick Rude are in for the fight of their lives tonight, he’s got the best partner he could ask for in Austin Idol, and says that they’re gonna give Rude and Hernandez a whoopin’ tonight!
Solie says that Idol has special handicap matches coming up, where he’ll face both Paul Orndorff and Bobby Heenan, and Heenan has said the only way Austin Idol could get another shot at the North American title is if he can beat both Heenan and Orndorff in the handicap match! Gordon wonders if Idol may be looking past the tag match tonight, to the handicap matches with Orndorff and Heenan?
Idol says tonight, his mind is completely focused on Rude and Hernandez, but then, he’s going to kick Orndorff and Heenan from one side of this state to the other, and then he’s going to take the North American title!
HARLEY RACE beats MIKE GRAHAM. Race has been in a bit of a slump lately, losing some matches on TV and at house shows, but he gets back on track here, as he wears Graham down, and locks on the Indian Deathlock for the submission victory.
NORTH AMERICAN TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP:
THE FANTASTICS: BOBBY FULTON & TOMMY ROGERS (champs) defeat VINCE APOLLO & ROGER KIRBY. The Fantastics get the win after they hit Apollo with a double dropkick, followed by the Rocket Launcher for the pinfall victory.
ROCKY “SOULMAN” JOHNSON & “THE UNIVERSAL HEARTHROB” AUSTIN IDOL defeat “GORGEOUS” GINO HERNANDEZ & “RAVISHING” RICK RUDE (w/ Bobby Heenan) by DQ. This match is a wild one, as all four men brawl in the ring to start. Referee Tommy Young manages to get order restored, and Rude and Idol face off. Idol gains the upper hand early, but when he runs the ropes, Bobby Heenan reaches under the bottom rope and trips him. This gives Rude a chance to tag Hernandez in, and both Gino and Rude double-team Idol until Young forces Rude from the ring.
Hernandez and Rude control the next several minutes, keeping Idol in their corner, and using quick tags to keep the fresh man in the ring. Rude and Gino look to be on their way to victory, when Idol manages to fight his way out of their corner, and makes the hot tag to Rocky Johnson!
The Soulman comes in and drops both Rude and Hernandez with rights and lefts! Rocky is fired up, but before he can do any more damage “MR. WONDERFUL” PAUL ORNDORFF hits the ring!
Orndorff slides into the ring behind Rocky, and clips Johnson’s knee, putting him on the mat. From there, Rude, Hernandez and Orndorff gang up on Rocky. Idol rushes in to make the save, but he gets beaten down as well!
Suddenly, there’s some commotion, and out of the crowd comes . . .
CHIEF WAHOO MCDANIEL!!!
Wahoo, in street clothes, slides into the ring and tears into all three of Heenan’s men! Unfortunately for Wahoo, the heels quickly gain the upper hand, and Rude and Gino hold Wahoo while Orndorff delivers a series of stiff right hands to the head of the big Chief.
Idol and Rocky are back up, and Idol starts brawling with Orndorff, while Rocky helps Wahoo send Rude and Gino out of the ring. Orndorff soon follows them, as a big right hand from Idol sends Orndorff tumbling through the ropes and to the floor.
Heenan leads Orndorff, Rude and Hernandez to the back, while Rocky Johnson, Austin Idol and Wahoo McDaniel stand tall in the ring!
Solie and Reynolds are shocked by the appearance of Wahoo McDaniel as they wrap things up. Solie hypes next week’s show, which will see the 10-man Battle Royal for the NAWF Florida TV title!
So long from the Sunshine state!
