UNIVERSAL WRESTLING ENTERPRISE presents
Superstars of the Ring
Taped: Tuesday, March 5, 1985, Sacramento, California
Airing: Friday, March 8, 1985, ESPN
Interviewer: Gene Okerlund
Announcers: Rod Trongard and Dutch Savage
Referee: Joey Marella
Ring Announcer: Joe Blancard
Gene Okerlund: Welcome to another edition of Superstars of the Ring! We have another huge show for you this evening. On our program, you will see newcomer Ronnie Garvin in action, Jimmy Snuka will be on the program, the Wild Samoans take on the Killer Bees, and in our huge main event, the UWE Tag-Team Champions Rock and Roll Express defend their belts against Jake Roberts and Big John Stud.
We are just weeks away from the historic night of wrestling where Prime Time Classic, a blockbuster wrestling card from Portland, Oregon, will be broadcast live on ESPN. In the main event of that huge card, Magnum TA and Roddy Piper will meet Big John Studd and Jake Roberts in the Main Event. We will have more matches to announce in the next few weeks.
Last week, we had an awkward and explosive scene between Roddy Piper and Magnum TA. The two fan favorites had a bit of disagreement over Magnum winning the Pro Wrestling Illustrated most popular wrestler award. These are two of hottest stars in wrestling, and they are teaming together to take on the dangerous Big John Studd and Jake Roberts at the Prime Time Classic card. Let’s welcome UWE World Heavyweight Champion Roddy Piper to the program to talk about what happened last week.
Champ, last week you seemed quite upset by Magnum winning the PWI most popular wrestler award…
Roddy Piper: Let me stop you right there Gene. The heavyweight champion of the world doesn’t get upset, I don’t get angry, I don’t get jealous. I got no one to be jealous of, jack. I’ve held this title for almost a year. Wrestlers from all over the world have tried to take it from me. They’ve all failed. I know I’m the best wrestler in the world and I don’t need no plaque to let me know that. I’m going to keep doing what I’ve been doing, and if the fans want to cheer for someone else instead, so be it. The fans don’t keep this title around my waist, I keep it around my waist.
Gene Okerlund: Interesting comments from the world heavyweight champion. Let’s head to the ring for our first match of the evening. Rod Trongard and Dutch Savage are on the call as hands of stone Ronnie Garvin is in action.
Match #1: Ronnie Garvin defeated Art Crews via pinfall.

Gene Okerlund: Every week, the Universal Wrestling Enterprise has hundreds of wrestlers beating down the door to try and part of this organization. The UWE Competition Committee is very selective, as we strive to bring you the best talent in the world. We have to turn down tons of pleas from talented wrestlers, but when we get someone like our next guest, he gets signed immediately. Debuting on the program now is legendary manager Gary Hart and his new protegee, the monster known as Big Van Vader.
Gary Hart: Your peaceful existence has come to an end. You thought you’ve seen destruction, you thought you’ve seen mayhem. You have seen nothing yet. This man, this monster, Big Van Vader, has been trained all around the world. In Japan, they say his name with fear. In Europe, children cry when he is mentioned. In America, well, in America, you are about to learn why he is so feared. Big Van Vader, with the assistance of my brilliant mind, will be an unstoppable force and I pity those who try and stand in his path.
Gene Okerlund: Big Van Vader looks like no one this promotion has ever seen. With Gary Hart behind him, I suspect we’ll hear a lot more from him over the next few months. Let’s head to our next match as Jimmy Snuka is in action.
Match #2: Jimmy Snuka defeats Buddy Lane via pinfall.
---Commercial Break---
Gene Okerlund: Last week, in Anaheim, California, Tito Santana ended the reign of Adrian Adonis to become the new UWE Television Champion. It is my pleasure to welcome the new champion, Tito Santana!
Tito Santana: Gracias Gene! Adrian Adonis lied, he cheated, he and Freddie Blassie broke ever rule to try and keep that belt. Their cheating ways worked for a long time. But like I always say, in the end, good will prevail. In Anaheim, for the wrestling fans, for all of you who have stood behind me for years, I won the Television Title. I promise to defend this belt with honor in the name of all of you out there watching on television. We did it! I’m ready to take on all challengers. Arriba Gene!
Gene Okerlund: Congratulations to Tito Santana. He better be ready though, as he will defend his title in a rematch on next week’s program against Adrian Adonis in our main event. Let’s head to the ring as the Wild Samoans meet the Killer Bees.
Match #3: Wild Samoans w/ Captain Lou Albano defeated Killer Bees via pinfall.
---Commercial Break---
Gene Okerlund: Last week, we saw an ominous video sent straight from Russia in which we were warned of the impending arrival of the Nikita Koloff. Brace yourself, here is the Russian Nightmare.
Nikita Koloff: I knew you Americans were weak, pathetic, lazy. It’s worse than I thought. Your society is a failure. Look close, look real close. You are not dreaming, you are looking at a nightmare. I have been trained in Russia, worked with the KGB, spent Winters in Siberia. You think I am scared of America? You are wrong. I have been sent to take over this place. Call your President, tell him to get the army and the marines, because the Russian Nightmare has started the invasion.
Gene Okerlund: The Russian Nightmare is ready to take the UWE by storm. We’ll see him in ring action next week. It’s time for our main event as Jake Roberts and Big John Studd face the World Tag-Team Champions Rock and Roll Express in a non-title bout.
Match #4: UWE Tag-Team Champions the Rock and Roll Express defeated Big John Studd and Jake Roberts via disqualification. As the Rock and Roll Express gained the upper hand, Roberts grabbed a steel chair at ringside and struck Morton. The referee rang the bell as Studd and Roberts then double-teamed Gibson. As the heels continued their assault, Magnum TA ran to ringside and started to take on Roberts and Studd. He was holding his own when Roddy Piper then ran to the ring as well. It was a free for all with all four men fighting as the RR Express lay outside the ring. In the chaos, Magnum TA accidentally struck Piper. Security arrived at ringside and separated the men. Magnum attempted to apologize to Piper, who screamed back at TA as security stood between them.
Gene Okerlund: There’s mayhem in the ring! We’ll get this all sorted out and have a full rundown next week. In addition, Tito Santana will defend his television title against Adrian Adonis. Till next week wrestling fans.
