VETERANS MEMORIAL COLISEUM in PHOENIX, ARIZONA
BRAD ARMSTRONG defeats STEVE BORDEN. Borden, the muscular youngster from Venice Beach, California has his first pro match here against Armstrong. Armstrong gets the win with a Russian legsweep.
RICK RUDE defeats “COWBOY” SCOTT CASEY. Rude makes his NAWF debut. He takes his time entering the ring to start the match, apparently more interested in flirting with the women around ringside, and jawing with the male fans. Once inside the ring, Rude makes a whole show of removing his robe, before locking up with Casey. The rugged cowboy enjoys an early advantage, taking Rude to the mat with an armdrag, and then working him over. Rude soon turns the tables with a thumb to the eye, and then puts the boots to Casey. The momentum continues to go back and forth, until Rude is able to hit Casey with a vicious neckbreaker for the pinfall victory.
BARRY WINDHAM beats “DIRTY” DUTCH MANTELL. Dutch wanted a rematch after losing to Windham last weekend in Albuquerque, but the result here is the same, as Windham gets the win over the Dutchman by pinfall following a Bulldog.
CHAVO GUERRERO beats DYNAMITE KID. The Phoenix fans are treated to a great match here between two of the top Jr. heavyweight wrestlers in the world. The action is lightning-quick, and in the end, Chavo gets the win after connecting with a Moonsault press for the pinfall.
MIL MASCARAS defeats HARLEY RACE. This is a match that has been a main event in arenas all over the world. Mascaras, possibly the biggest name in Lucha Libre history and former IWA World champion, squares off with Harley Race, a former 7-time NWA World heavyweight champion and one of the most highly-regarded wrestlers of his generation. These two have met before in America, Mexico and Japan, and put on classics each and every time. This match is no exception and the fans are treated to about 20 minutes of action.
In the end, Mascaras manages to get the win in this hard-fought bout. Race dives off the top rope for a headbutt, but Mascaras rolls out of the way and Race crashes to the mat. A moment later, as Race slowly staggers to his feet, Mascaras comes off the top with a flying bodypress for the 1, 2, 3.
“THE UNIVERSAL HEARTHROB” AUSTIN IDOL defeats THE MASKED SUPERSTAR (w/ Bobby Heenan). Superstar enjoys the advantage throughout most of the early part of the match, as he methodically wears Idol down, focusing on the neck of the Universal Hearthrob. Superstar drops clubbing forearms down across the back of Idol’s neck, knocking Austin to the mat, where the masked man then wrenches on Idol’s neck, looking to soften him up for the swinging neckbreaker.
The tables turn in Idol’s favour, though, when the Superstar misses a kneedrop, and Idol immediately goes on the attack, softening up the Superstar’s knee, looking for the Las Vegas leglock. A few minutes later, Idol goes to lock on the hold, but Bobby Heenan gets up on the ring apron, distracting Idol. Austin goes over and confronts Heenan, and the Superstar moves in to attack from behind . . . but Idol moves, and the Superstar collides with Heenan instead!
With the Superstar momentarily stunned, Idol quickly rolls him up and gets the 1, 2, 3!!!
As Idol is getting his hand raised, the Superstar jumps him from behind, hitting the Swinging Neckbreaker. Not satisfied with that, Superstar picks Idol up and hits a second Neckbreaker!
Superstar then storms off, leaving Idol laying in the middle of the ring.
SUDANESE DEATH MATCH:
ABDULLAH THE BUTCHER (w/ Bobby Heenan) defeats “SOULMAN” ROCKY JOHNSON. The Sudanese Death match is a First Blood match, so whichever wrestler starts bleeding first will lose. The match doesn’t last long before KAMALA comes down to the ring! He enters the ring and joins Abby in double-teaming the Soulman.
Rocky tries desperately to fight off both monsters, but they give him a vicious beating, rendering him a bloody mess! The referee calls for the bell, awarding the match to Abdullah!
Every time someone came out to try and help, Abby and Kamala beat them up as well. Finally, with Rocky on the mat, his face a crimson mask, Abby and Kamala decide they’ve done enough damage, and Heenan, with a big smile on his face, leads them to the back.
NORTH AMERICAN TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP:
THE FANTASTICS: TOMMY ROGERS & BOBBY FULTON (challengers) defeat THE FABULOUS FREEBIRDS: MICHAEL HAYES & TERRY GORDY (champs) to win the titles. After a hard-fought match, the Fantastics get the win when they hit Hayes with a double dropkick, then Fulton keeps Gordy from getting involved while Rogers covers Hayes for the 1, 2, 3!
