UNIVERSAL WRESTLING ENTERPRISE presents
FESTIVAL OF CHAMPIONS : Blockbuster Battle
Sunday, August 12, 1984
McNichols Arena
Denver, Arizona
Ring Announcer: Joe Blanchard
Referees: Dick Kroll, Joey Marella
Before the matches begin, Lord James Blears welcomes Denver Broncos quarterback John Elway to ringside to serve as the ceremonial bell-ringer.
Match #1
Special Attraction Match
El Hijo del Santo and Mil Mascaras fought to a 15-minute time limit draw.
Match #2
Rock and Rock Express defeat the Wild Samoans w/ Captain Lou Albano to win the UWE World Tag-Team Championship. (18:40) This was a classic back and forth match that saw the Samoans use every rulebreaking trick in the book. Morton was trapped and Albano’s duo did their best to keep him incapacitated. Morton was finally able to make the hot tag to Gibson who came in and cleaned house. Captain Lou attempted to interfere, but Gibson was able to avoid a punch attempt as Albano struck Afa. While the ref was admonishing Albano, RRE landed a double dropkick. Gibson pinned Afa as the ref turned around and counted 1..2..3. We have new world tag-team champions!
Match #3
UWE World Heavyweight Champion Roddy Piper and Jake Roberts fought to a no-contest when the Colorado State Athletic Commission representative at ringside stopped the match due to excessive violence in the ring aisle. (23:40) This was another in a long-line of brutal Piper/Roberts matches. Both men had the advantage at times but neither could finish off their opponent. The fight once again headed to the outside of the ring as the two were going at it in the aisle. Roberts landed a powerful clothesline which caused both men to tumble over the protective barrier and into the crowd. As the audience quickly spread, and the men continued to fight, the ringside representative from the Colorado State Athletic Commission instructed referee Joey Marella to stop the match. The official reason given for the stoppage was fear for the safety of the ringside audience. Those same ringside audience members were not pleased with the athletic commission’s ruling.
