AWA “PRO WRESTLING USA”
Airdate: Friday, June 23, 1988
Broadcast nationwide on Superstation WGN
Taped June 22, 1988 at the Brown County Arena in Green Bay, WI
“From coast to coast, border to border, and continent to continent, this is the AWA, the major leagues of professional wrestling!”
Rod Trongard opens the show, and welcomes his co-host Diamond Dallas Page!
They talk about last weekend’s WrestleRock PPV. What a night it was, we witnessed the Great War, where World champion Steve Williams, Sgt. Slaughter and Nikita Koloff defeated General Skandor Akbar’s Army of Abdullah the Butcher, Mr. Saito and the One Man Gang! We also saw new World Tag Team champions crowned as the British Bulldogs defeated Stan Hansen and King Kong Brody!
Several minutes of clips are shown, focusing on the main matches from WrestleRock. We see Wahoo McDaniel defeat John Tatum for the World TV title, Paul Orndorff defend the Americas title against Jimmy Snuka, the British Bulldogs defeat Stan Hansen and King Kong Brody for the World Tag titles, and finally the Great War!
NIKITA KOLOFF VS. MR. SAITO. Nikita tears into Saito to start the match, and doesn’t let up for the entire match. Saito gets some offence in, but Nikita shrugs it off, and connects with a vicious Russian Sickle for the 1, 2, 3.
Magnum TA is standing by with Jimmy Hart and AWA Americas champ “Mr. Wonderful” Paul Orndorff. Magnum asks them about tonight’s main event, where Orndorff will team up with Abdullah the Butcher to face Steve Williams and Sgt. Slaughter.
Orndorff says that obviously teaming with Abdullah makes him nervous, the man is a raving lunatic and you never know what he’s going to do, but it doesn’t matter, Orndorff says he could beat Slaughter and Williams by himself, so all Abby needs to do is stay out of his way!
STAN HANSEN VS. JAKE “THE MILKMAN” MILLIMAN. Hansen just steamrolls poor Milliman here, pounding him into the mat, and connecting with the Lariat for the pinfall victory.
After the match, Hansen grabs the mic from Larry Nelson, and says that King Kong Brody cost them the World Tag titles, and Hansen can’t let that go unpunished. Hansen challenges Brody to get in the ring with him and get the whuppin’ that he’s got coming!
Rod Trongard says that, at WrestleRock, Dallas Page said he had found two wrestlers to manage, and that he would introduce them this week.
Page says that he has signed a team that will revolutionize tag team wrestling! He says that once people see these two in action, they will forget all about teams like the British Bulldogs, the Rock n’ Roll Express or the Midnight Express! He says that this team is the future of wrestling!
Page then introduces Tom Pritchard and Jimmy Del Ray, the Playboys!
AWA WORLD TELEVISION CHAMPIONSHIP:
WAHOO MCDANIEL (champ) VS. THE RED DEMON. The Demon jumps Wahoo to start the match, but Wahoo turns the tables, catching the masked man with some brutal chops, before dropping the Demon with a butterfly suplex for the pinfall.
Magnum TA is standing by with King Kong Brody. Brody says that if Stan Hansen wants a fight, he’s more than happy to give him one!
STEVE “DR. DEATH” WILLIAMS & SGT. SLAUGHTER VS. ABDULLAH THE BUTCHER & “MR. WONDERFUL” PAUL ORNDORFF (w/ Jimmy Hart). There’s plenty of time remaining for this one, and the fans are treated to a wild match! We see the contrast in styles on the heel side, as Orndorff wrestles with Slaughter and Williams, going move for move with them, but once Abby comes in, anything resembling wrestling goes right out the window, as the madman from the Sudan would much rather punch, bite and gouge his opponents, bringing out his trusty fork every chance he gets.
Late in the match, Steve Williams and Abby brawl around ringside, while Slaughter and Orndorff, the legal men, go tooth and nail inside the ring. Orndorff has the upper hand, but when he tries to cinch Slaughter up for the Piledriver, Sarge backdrops Orndorff instead. Slaughter runs the ropes and as Orndorff gets to his feet, Sarge puts him right back down with a clothesline. From there, Slaughter connects with the Slaughter Cannon for the 1, 2, 3!
Slaughter has pinned the Americas champion!
As Slaughter gets his hand raised, Williams and Abby continue to brawl on the floor, now making their way into the first few rows of seats, causing fans to scatter in all directions!
Trongard and Page wrap things up, with Trongard hyping next week’s show.
