Smoky Mountain Wrestling presented a full card of action last night at the Kingsport Civic Auditorium that the crowd of 550 stayed on their feet for.
In the main event of the evening, “Hacksaw” Jim Duggan won the decision over Lord Jonathon Boyd by disqualification after 18:05 of intense action. Duggan is a favorite in the Tri-Cities, and had the crowd solidly on his side during the rough and tumble contest. He and Boyd battled back and forth with fists, forearms, clotheslines, and kicks…but with few actual wrestling “holds”. Boyd, the wildman from New Zealand, seemed to get frustrated late in the contest and used the metal pole on which his New Zealand flag hangs to blast Jim Duggan in the head with, drawing the DQ, and some of Duggan’s blood as well. He attempted to continue the assault after the bout, but Duggan was able to rally and take the flag pole away and chase Jonathon Boyd out of the ring with it.
One of the most popular tag teams in all the world of wrestling, The Rock & Roll Express, defeated brother duo Joel & David Deaton by pinfall after 19:45 of action when Ricky Morton and Robert Gibson connected with their patented double team maneuver double drop kick on David. The popular Rock & Roll Express are slated to meet Ron Wright’s duo of Shaska Whatley and Tiger Conway Jr. next Wednesday night at the Auditorium.
“The Russian Bear” Ivan Koloff had his work cut out for him when he met Johnny Rich in mat action, as Rich held his own and almost pulled out the win over the veteran on several occasions in this one. The skilled veteran Koloff took advantage of a Rich mistake however, and finished off his younger opponent with the dreaded Russian Hammer for the pinfall after 13:28 of solid action. Ivan has announced he will be debuting his nephew Vladimir Pietrov in the coming weeks. The last time Ivan Koloff introduced a nephew to the wrestling world, it was Nikita Koloff, who has gone on to be a perennial World Title contender. Johnny Rich is the cousin of southern wrestling standout Tommy Rich.
Sam Houston got an energetic win over “Hustler” Rip Rogers in the second bout of the evening when he caught him with his famed “bulldog” move where he drives his opponent’s head into the mat with force. Time of the match was 15:19.
In the first bout on the card, Mike Enos wrestled Mark Starr to a ten minute time limit draw. Both are youngsters in the sport, but have showed a lot of promise in their short time. There should be plenty more opportunities for these young men to impress promoters and the fans considering the effort and intensity they displayed here.
On tap for next week’s card at the Kingsport Civic Auditorium:
Rock & Roll Express vs. The Jive Tones w/ Ron Wright
Nelson Royal vs. Ole Anderson
