Smoky Mountain Wrestling has started up operations in the Northeastern part of Tennessee, and the Southeastern part of Kentucky. The recently retired Nick Bockwinkle was hired and named the Match Maker for the new territory. To kick things off, SMW taped four episodes of television at one taping at East High School Gym in Morristown TN, with the four weeks of television being played on a couple of local stations in consecutive weeks. Here is what has happened so far on the weekly television shows.
Smokey Mountain Wrestling Television Week 2 Recap
Taped Saturday 01-07-88
at East High School Gym in Morristown TN
Broadcast on Sunday 01-22-88 on WCYB TV-5 in the Tri-Cities
Chip Kessler welcomed everyone back in for another exciting hour of Smokey Mountain Wrestling, and hyped the fact that “Hacksaw” Jim Duggan would be in action on the program today!
In the first match of the broadcast, Black Bart got a win over Jimmy Backlund with his patented Texas Trash Compactor leg drop from the second rope. After the decision was final, he mounted the second turn buckle again and launched with another one! He had a wild smile across his face after it was all over with.
Manager Ron Wright joined Chip Kessler and said that he is impressed with what he has just seen from Black Bart here today. He said that is a man after his own heart. He then went on to talk about managing champions here in Smokey Mountain Wrestling. Chip Kessler cut him off and asked about maybe a tag team. Wright said that he knows a couple of old boys who could come in here and do a lot of damage in the area, especially if those Fantastics are whats considered to be the best team here. He finished by saying that he is the King of this area, he’s the #1 hillbilly, he’s the smartest and best looking man around, and he is going to be the manager of champions around here!
“Dixie Dynamite” Scott Armstrong got the best of Thunderfoot in a competitive match, and notched another win for himself. Thunderfoot loaded up his boot at one point and went for a kick, but Scott moved out of the way and took over with a flying clothesline. It was shortly after that that Armstrong caught Thunderfoot with his Confederate Kick for the winning pin fall.
Lord Jonathon Boyd and his flag bearer Rex King joined Kessler to complain about how much attention is being paid to Jim Duggan here, when it was him that went out last week here on TV and destroyed that other kid! He said Duggan don’t look so tough, and he’s probably like all the other Americans….soft and gutless!
The Fantastics picked up another win, this time defeating the Green Machines (Bugsy McGraw & Fred Ottman under masks). The larger Green Machines controlled for just a little bit in the beginning due to their size, but it wasn’t long before the speed of the Fantastics took over and sealed the deal.
After the match, they went to talk to Chip Kessler, and Bobby Fulton was fired up. He said that for two weeks in a row now, that loud mouth Ron Wright has run his mouth about the Fantastics. He said that if Ron Wright knows two “good ole boys”, why don’t he put his money where his mouth is and bring them here to Smokey Mountain Wrestling, and he and Tommy will wrestle them, and then we’ll see just how “prissy” the Fantastics are.
After the Fantastics left, Chip was interrupted by “Hustler” Rip Rogers and Thunderfoot. Thunderfoot was rubbing his jaw while Rogers said they had a complaint to make. He said that last week, Scott Armstrong kicked him harder than he has ever been hit, and this week he did the same thing to Thunderfoot. He said they think Armstrong has lead or something in his boot, and that’s illegal, and they want Nick Bockwinkle to investigate it! Kessler tried to interject that it is Thunderfoot that seems to load up his boot with something before kicking someone, but Rogers cut him off and said that they demand an investigation, and they both want Scott Armstrong in another match!
“Hacksaw” Jim Duggan won his debut match in SMW when he defeated Carl Styles with a pair of running shoulder tackles. Afterwards, he told Chip Kessler that there is one thing he don’t stand for, and that’s someone running down the good ole US of A, and when Jonathon Boyd was out here, he said Americans are soft and gutless. Duggan said that Boyd should come on out here and see how gutless HE is! He raised his 2x4 high and yelled “HOOOOOO” before leaving.
In the main event, Rip Rogers notched a tainted win over Nelson Royal. It was a good contest throughout, but Thunderfoot came to ringside and distracted Royal allowing Rogers to roll him up from behind and grab a handful of tights for the pin. Afterwards when Royal tried to protest, he was blind sided by Rip. Thunderfoot joined in and the two of them started to put the boots to Royal, but Scott Armstrong quickly hit the ring and ran them off. Rogers and Thunderfoot bailed to the floor and was jawing at Armstrong who got the ringside mic and said that if they want another match with him, how about next week, they team up and wrestle him and Nelson Royal! Rogers and Thunderfoot agreed as Chip Kessler was signing off.
The show went off the air with highlights of today’s program playing with “Flirtin’ With Disaster” by Molly Hatchet playing in the background.
