Smokey Mountain Wrestling has started up operations in the Northeastern part of Tennessee, and the Southeastern part of Kentucky. The recently retired Nick Bockwinkle was hired and named the Match Maker for the new territory. To kick things off, SMW taped four episodes of television at one taping at East High School Gym in Morristown TN, with the four weeks of television being played on a couple of local stations in consecutive weeks. Here is what has happened so far on the weekly television shows.
Smoky Mountain Wrestling TV Week 1 Recap
Taped Saturday 01-07-88
at East High School Gym in Morristown TN
Broadcast on Sunday 01-15-88 on WCYB TV-5 in the Tri-Cities
The first show started off with commentator and announcer Chip Kessler introducing the audience to the match maker of SMW, Mr. Nick Bockwinkle. Bockwinkle wasted no time getting to work in his new role, as he announced that he had reached a deal with a top wrestler to come compete in SMW, and he then brought out “Hacksaw” Jim Duggan who thanked Bockwinkle for the invitation and the opportunity, and said he would be in action the next week.
The first in-ring action for SMW had the fans on their feet, as Bobby & Tommy, The Fantastics, came out to the surprise of a lot of fans, and handily won a contest over the duo of Mark Starr and Joey Maggs. They did an interview with Kessler after the match where they talked about the growing competition in the Smokey Mountain area, and they are happy to be here and a part of it.
Next up on the show was the masked Thunderfoot getting a victory over George South as he used his loaded boot for a kick to South’s head to gain the winning fall.
Chip Kessler was again joined by Bockwinkle who was excited to be in this new role in his life, and excited about the prospect of being the one to actually put the matches together. Kessler congratulated him on bringing both Jim Duggan and The Fantastics to the area. Bockwinkle said that The Fantastics are one of the premiere teams in all the world, and he is very confident they will be in the hunt for the SMW Tag Team titles in the near future.
A familiar face for the locals, Nelson Royal notched a win over the larger Carl Styles with an Oklahoma Roll pin much to the delight of the crowd.
Manager Ron Wright made his way out to speak with Chip Kessler and said that he is the toughest man, and best wrestler to ever wrestler in this part of the country. He said he heard Bockwinkle out earlier gushing over the Fantastics. He said that he ain’t never seen a more prissy two men in his life, and he could go out and find two old boys that would smack the smiles right off of their faces. He said that he is here in SMW now, and he has his eye out for talent that he can manage to the very top, and he promises that sooner rather than later, he will be managing a champion here in SMW.
The wild New Zealander, Lord Jonathon Boyd, along with his flag bearer Rex King made short work of Jimmy Backlund in a brutal affair that saw Boyd ram Backlund into the ring post a couple of times before throwing him into the ring and finishing him off with a fist drop from the middle rope.
Kessler welcomed in local favorite, “Dixie Dynamite” Scott Armstrong who had the crowd cheering loudly. Scott said he is excited to be back in this part of the country once again, and looks forward to being considered for the SMW Title.
Scott wrestled “Hustler” Rip Rogers in the main event of the first show, and the two of them had quite the back and forth battle for 10 minutes. The end came when Rip missed a charge in the corner, and staggered around where he was hit with a super kick that Armstrong likes to call The Confederate Kick for the pinfall!
A few highlights of the show played while “The South’s Gonna Do It Again” by the Charlie Daniels Band played in the background. After that clip, Chip Kessler signed off for the day and asked that everyone tune in again next week for more Smokyy Mountain Wrestling!
