Taped on December 15 at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne, IN
We see footage of last week’s main event, between Rick Rude and Steve Williams, where Butch Reed helped Rude get the win, followed by a brawl between Rude & Reed and Williams & Terry Taylor.
Rod Trongard opens the show, and welcomes his co-host, Magnum TA.
On this week’s show, a match has been signed, between the World Tag champs Buzz Sawyer & Matt Borne, and Dick Slater and a partner of his choosing. Trongard notes that originally the titles were supposed to be on the line, but Percival Pringle turned his team of lawyers loose on the AWA board of directors, making the argument that it’s not fair for the champions, as they can’t adequately prepare for the match when they don’t know who their opponents will be.
So, as a result, the titles will not be on the line. But, a stipulation was added that, if the team of Slater and his mystery partner win the match here tonight, they’ll get a shot at the titles on Christmas night at the Met Center!
Trongard and Magnum then discuss the footage we saw at the top of the program. It was obvious that Williams had his leg on the rope during the pin, but Butch Reed pushed it off. Terry Taylor came out to let the referee know that Reed had interjected himself into the match, and that led to Reed and Rude attacking the World TV champion.
Right after the show ended, Williams and Taylor went to AWA President Stanley Blackburn, and got a tag team match signed with them against Reed and Rude on the Christmas day card in Green Bay, while that night at the Met Center, Rude will defend the World title against Williams, and Reed will challenge Taylor for the TV title.
We go to Larry Nelson, who is at ringside with The Pringle Dynasty. Percy says that Christmas night will be the night that he gains control of ALL of the gold in the AWA! He says that Butch Reed will beat Terry Taylor and bring the TV title to the Dynasty!
Reed says Taylor is a chump, and made the biggest mistake of his life by sticking his nose in the Dynasty’s business last week! Christmas night at the Met Center, he’s going to teach Taylor a lesson, and take his TV title!
Rick Rude says that every time he beats Williams, Doc has some excuse, instead of just admitting what everyone already knows, that Williams just isn’t in the same league as the Ravishing One! Rude says that he will beat Williams, yet again, on Christmas night, and then he’s done with him, and he’s moving on to more deserving challengers.
Sawyer and Borne don’t care who Slater gets as a partner, and Sawyer says that Slater and his partner are going to suffer the same fate as Jim Duggan!
“SUPERFLY” JIMMY SNUKA VS. JERRY MONTI. Snuka gets the victory by pinfall with the Superfly Splash.
Larry Nelson talks with “Dr. Death” Steve Williams and AWA World TV champion Terry Taylor. Williams says he appreciates what Taylor did last week, coming out to tell the referee what had happened, and the two men shake hands. Taylor says that Doc is a good man, and it makes his blood boil to see him get screwed out of the World title like that. Williams talks about the two of them facing Rude and Reed on the afternoon card on December 25, and then talks about facing Rick Rude that night at the Met Center. Doc says that he hopes the fans will come out to the Met Center Christmas night to see a new World champion crowned!
MR. SAITO (w/ Gen. Skandor Akbar) VS. JAKE MILLIMAN. Mr. Torture gets the win after completely dismantling Milliman, and delivering the Saito Suplex for the pinfall.
DON MURACO VS. SHEEPHERDER BUTCH MILLER (w/ Luke Williams). After a wild, hard-hitting match, Muraco gets the pinfall with the Hawaiian Hammer piledriver.
Larry Nelson interviews Dick Slater in the ring. Slater talks about the match set for later tonight, and says that the Tag champs are in for a world of hurt!
This brings “Mad Dog” Buzz Sawyer and “Maniac” Matt Borne out to the ring. Sawyer tells Slater to stop lying to these people, he knows that Slater couldn’t find anyone to team with him, because nobody but Slater is STUPID enough to get in the ring with them and risk their careers!
Slater tells Sawyer he’s wrong, and introduces his new tag team partner, the only man on this planet that’s meaner and tougher than him . . . one-half of the Minnesota Wrecking Crew Ole Anderson!
Ole comes out and gets right in Sawyer’s face, with the Mad Dog backing off, and him and Borne then leaving the ring, though they don’t look happy about this!
Anderson says that these fans can think whatever they want of him, they know the things he’s done over the years, he’s put more people on the shelf than Sawyer and Borne combined! But that was in the course of a match, never once in his career, has he intentionally tried to cripple someone, like Sawyer and Borne did, he’s never intentionally tried to stop someone from being able to suppor their families. He says that, on top of that, it took Sawyer, Borne AND Butch Reed to put Duggan down, and if it took three of them to take Duggan out, they don’t stand a chance against him!
Slater says that Sawyer and Borne can kiss those belts goodbye, then he and Ole shake hands before leaving the ring.
WORLD TELEVISION CHAMPIONSHIP:
TERRY TAYLOR (champ) VS. “BRUISER” BOB SWEETAN. This match goes back and forth, as both men get in plenty of offence. Late in the match, Sweetan gains the upper hand, and pummels Taylor, then sets him up for a piledriver, but Taylor backdrops Sweetan, then runs the ropes . . . and hits the diving forearm smash! That’s all she wrote for Sweetan, as Taylor covers him for the 1, 2, 3.
“PLAYBOY” BUDDY ROSE VS. DAVID SAMMARTINO. Rose gets the win with the Las Vegas Jackpot DDT.
After the match, Rose takes the mic from Larry Nelson and cuts a promo, saying that the AWA hasn’t shown him any respect, they’ve been keeping him down every since he got here, but he says that he’s the most talented wrestler on the face of the earth, and nobody can hold him down for long! He says that it’s only a matter of time before he’s holding not just A title, but ALL the gold here in the AWA!
Before the next match, General Skandor Akbar makes his way out to the ring, and takes the mic from Larry Nelson. Akbar then introduces his newest find, from the forests of Scandinavia, Nord the Viking! Akbar says that the Viking will debut soon, and will destroy anyone that gets in his way!
NON-TITLE MATCH:
“MAD DOG” BUZZ SAWYER & “MANIAC” MATT BORNE (w/ Percival Pringle III) VS. DICK SLATER & OLE ANDERSON. As we saw earlier, Dick Slater has brought one-half of the famous Minnesota Wrecking Crew back to the AWA, and they tear into Sawyer and Borne as soon as the bell sounds! At the start, we see all four men brawling in the ring, with Slater eventually getting the upper hand on Borne, and tossing him out of the ring, then Slater and Anderson hit a double clothesline on Sawyer, who rolls out to the floor as well. The champions talk things over with Pringle outside the ring, as Slater and Ole pace in the ring, waiting for them to come back in. Once they finally re-enter the ring, referee Gary DeRusha is able to get one member of each team out of the ring so the match can begin. The match goes back and forth, and in the end, the team of Slater and Ole get the win when Anderson connects with a top-rope knee drop on Borne, and covers him for the pinfall, while Slater brawls with Sawyer!
Trongard says that, with the win here tonight, Ole and Slater will get a shot at the titles on Christmas night at the Met Center!
Trongard and Magnum then wrap things up as the show comes to an end.
