OK, now that I've had time to plan out where I want to go with the promotion, I'm going to do another recap, to try and set up what I want to do in Stampede...
NORTH AMERICAN TITLE:
Davey Boy Smith has had his hands full, defending both the NA heavyweight title, as well as the NA tag team titles along with Dynamite Kid. Davey Boy turned back some tough challenges throughout the Summer and early Fall. One challenger in particular gave Davey Boy all he could handle, a man that he's been wrestling against on and off for the last year or so, India's Great Gama Singh, although Gama now claims to hail from Pakistan.
Davey and Gama wrestled to 30 minute draws around the territory, and when the time limit was extended to 60 minutes for subsequent rematches, there was still no winner declared as they wrestled the full 60 minutes. It took a 90 minute time limit to see a winner, as Davey Boy was able to defeat Great Gama around the territory, with those matches going well over an hour as well!
Davey Boy had brought his younger brother, Johnny Smith, to the area around the time of the Calgary Stampede, in early July. For July and August, Johnny was at ringside for his brother's matches, watching Davey Boy's back.
When Bad News Allen returned to the area in early September, fresh off a 60-day suspension for assaulting a referee, he immediately set his sights on Davey Boy and the North American title. When a title match was signed, Stampede officials decided they needed a referee who wouldn't be intimidated by Allen, and Johnny Smith quickly volunteered.
The match was set for the Calgary Pavilion in late September, and the building was packed that Friday night for the match. Johnny Smith called the match right down the middle . . . until the end, when he shocked everyone in the building by sucker punching his own brother, allowing Bad News to choke Davey Boy in the ropes, and then made an extremely fast count before awarding the belt to Bad News Allen!
Fans littered the ring with debris as Ed Whalen spoke with Johnny Smith in the ring after the match. Johnny's jealousy of his brother became apparent, as he talked about Davey Boy always holding him back, just because Davey knew that Johnny was the superior wrestler. When he brought Johnny to Stampede, did he want to tag team with him? No, he just wanted Johnny to hang around and watch his back. He says that he's too good to waste his time watching his brother's back, and when he gets Davey Boy in the ring, he'll prove who the better brother is!
NORTH AMERICAN TAG TEAM TITLES:
The tag team titles were only defended occasionally during the Summer, as Davey Boy had his hands full with defending the NA title. Some thought that the promotion should force Davey Boy to give up one of his titles, but that became a moot point when he lost the NA title to Bad News Allen in September.
Throughout the Summer, the Masters of Disaster, Kerry Brown and Kelly Kiniski (who was replacing Duke Meyers in the team), steamrolled through every team put in their path, and as Summer turned to Fall, the Masters of Disaster were demanding a shot at the belts. In the weeks leading up to Davey Boy's NA title loss, he and Dynamite defended the titles against Brown and Kiniski, and were able to hang onto the belts as the challengers were disqualified in most of the matches.
Several No DQ matches have been signed for early October between the two teams in various Stampede cities, including Calgary and Edmonton.
BRITISH COLUMBIA MID-HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE:
Some of the best matches Stampede fans have ever seen were over the BC Mid-Heavyweight title, as Bruce Hart defended against any and all challengers. There wasn't really any particular feuds over the title throughout the Summer, Bruce wrestled a wide variety of challengers, including Great Gama, Ben Bassarab, Richard Charland, Japanese sensation the Cobra, a masked wrestler by the name of Checkmate, and even a few matches against Mexican legend El Hijo Del Santo!
The Exotic One, Adrian Street, who has held Jr. Heavyweight titles all over the world, arrived in Stampede in August, and immediately made it known that he was interested in the BC Mid-Heavyweight title, although from his actions and comments, it seems he may be just as interested in the current Champion as he is in the title!
In late September, Bruce Hart wrapped up a series of matches against Ron Starr, who had been teaming with Bad News Allen before Allen's suspension. They wrestled an outstanding series of matches that had fans on the edge of their seats from bell to bell, and culminated in a wild Loser Leaves Stampede match. Bruce won the match, and sent "Rotten" Ron packing.
OTHER NEWS:
In a move that shocked the Stampede fans, Bobby Heenan, who many consider to be the #1 manager in wrestling today, arrived in Stampede. Heenan claimed he would rebuild the Heenan Family in Stampede, and also approached long-time manager JR Foley about a working arrangment so that, together, they could rid Stampede of the Hart family!
Bobby Duncum, the big cowboy from West Texas, arrived in Stampede at the end of September, and speculation started right away that he might be the first wrestler to sign with Bobby Heenan, as they had a successful partnership in the 70s in the AWA.
Jim Neidhart returned to the promotion, and started teaming again with his old tag team partner from a few years earlier, Bret Hart. And speaking of Bret, he has set his sights on Bad News Allen and the North American title.
